I had always thought of Ripclaw as just some sort of Wolverine knock-off, but I have to say that I enjoyed this first pilot episode. I haven't seen the others yet (obviously) but almost right out of the gate this one seems like a really strong contender. A full review of issue #1 is over there (http://madbastard.hypersites.com/site/page/pg3315-pn_Ripclaw_1.html).

Blasphemes you speak! Ripclaw would have to appear in about fifteen books a month to reach the overexposure that Wolverine has achieved. :D
I'll probably pick this up as well.

It was pretty good. Had a Kill Bill feel to it, despite most of the battles occurring amusingly off-panel. I wish they'd redesign the character to get rid of his dated Lobo eyes. Fairly good art.

claws - check, healing factor - check, murky past - check....
I'm not overly familiar with the charcter outside of the first few issues of Cyberforce, but wiki says:
He is in fact descended from a primitive woodland tribe that lived thousands of years ago in what is now the Northeastern United States. He left home after he began to develop his mutation, and injured a fellow student during a martial arts training session.
He was found by a powerful shaman, who taught him about his ancestors. They went through a ceremony where Ripclaw experienced a joining and conversing with the spirits of his ancestors and the spirits of the land, who told him that he was Robert Bearclaw, and not Robert Berresford, as his father had always told him
The spirits told him that he was to be their warrior and that he was to lead the Indian People back to the greatness of spirit that they once had. When he finished the ceremony, involving tribal flesh hooks and war paint, the shaman marked him with his blood, and this became the red markings over his skin, reminding him always of the pain and truth of the ceremony that he had been through. He was raised primarily by the shaman after that, who taught him how to use his special talents.
Is this really his backstory?!

I thought it was a decent enough read. It's certainly a different angle on the character. I thought he was designed/drawn a little too much like Logan though (Marlboro man with fringed jacket), but i understand that having him run around in costume in this story might've looked out of place.
Now, I kind of regret not pre-ordering the other Pilot Season issues.

That is freakin' hilarious. I mean, most super-hero origins sound silly when you just flat state them, but someone over at Top Cow might want to looking into re-writing that.
