It differs from state to state.

I think if you get your parent's permission, you can work as young as 13 in certain jobs, but with limited hours per week.

No son of mine is going to be a 19th Century Cockney bootblack.

I started working at 12 with parents permission. It was only part time and I was working at a local restaurant, working the fryer.

I used to mow yards in the nieghborhood when I was 12 or 13 during the summer. It was just 2 to 4 yards at max from what I remember and it was every 2 weeks.

I hear the likes of Nike might find you a position in one of their overseas 'factories'.

I think it varies between where you live and the job itself. I was able to caddy at the local country club at age 13.

I think in Ontario you can legally work at age 15, but you are limited to certain hours (no late nights, no long shifts).

Of course they don't pay the 15-year olds very well....I think at my first job I actually earned more returning beer bottles to the Beer Store (I collected them, my parents took them into the store) than I did on the actual job. And the beer money was cash too! No deductions!

I got a paper route shortly before I turned 10. I was tall for my age, so they assumed that I was a few years older. When I was 16, I lied about my age so I could join the Laborer's Union and work for my dad's construction company at a union site. I almost lost it when the union guy filling out my paperwork asked me if I had any kids. ("Not that I know of...") At the site, the guys knew I was the boss's son, but they were curious why I didn't drive myself to work. I told them that my license was suspended for a DWI.

Actually, 10 days of age is the earliest age a person can work.

So those new born babies you see in movies/TV are at least 10 days old.

Also, they have to have a tutor on set...yes a 10 day old has to have a tutor on set.
