Fourth and fifth for me. Once the PS2 came out, I lost interest in console games and am now a PC-only gamer.

My favorite JRPGs and multiplayer games came from these eras: Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Star Ocean, Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Mario Party...

where's the Commodore 64? Anyway, third generation. Started at 6 with the NES

Started with Game & Watch, moved onto Vic20, really got going with the ZX Spectrum, then the Amiga, then Playstation, now own Playstation 2, Gamecube, Xbox, Gameboy Advance SP, PSP.

Anyone got a spare life that they're not using?

Got introduced to gaming via the SNES of my cousin. The first three games I played were 'Battletoads/Double Dragon', 'Stunt Race FX', and 'Super Mario All Stars'. I still prefer 2d to 3d, and I occasionally seek out old SNES games.

EDIT: I'm 4th generation btw. I meant '2-dimensional' and '3-dimensional', not 'second' and 'third'. Thought I'd clear that up.

I'll have to say third generation. I was aware of the Atari 2600 at some point in my childhood but I don't recall actually playing or having it.

The NES was my first system.

Where's the Spectrum in this? Well, I picked Third Generation since my first console was the Master System.

I'm third generation. However, I consider the fourth generation the best.

Second Generation. While I didn't own a Atari or Commodore 64, I did play them with a friend who had both. My first system that I owned, was the NES.

I'm third generation since I got into gaming with the NES and Sega Master system. Though I consider the fourth generation to be the best.

Third Generation most likely, possibly Second.

We had a couple different Atari somethingerothers waaaay back in the day, but I don't remember which ones. Moved on to a "PC" after that. Then a NES, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, N64, PS2, PC games, Game Boy Advance, X-Box, X-Box 360...

Still have the last 5 systems too. :)

I guess I'm 2nd gen... started out with an Atari 2600.

Though my first console was a Master System I rated myself as fourth generation, because when I got my Master System the Megadrive and SNES were already out, and I received a Megadrive about a year after getting my Master System.

I started gaming in the second generation, but for me, gaming peaked in the fourth. I realize I'm looking back with rose colored glasses, but part of me kinda wished the SNES would last forever.

While a number of my all-time favorite games fall within the fourth generation (Shining Force I & II, Phantasy Star IV, Beyond Oasis, Landstalker for Sega Genesis, Lunar: Eternal Blue and Snatcher for Sega CD; Yoshi's Island, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III for SNES) I think I enjoyed the fifth generation more overall, even though the Playstation was the only system I ever had to replace.

5th generation for me.

The intense rivalry between SNES and Genesis made 4th Gen pretty awesome. Plus, you had SFII exploding in arcades. Good times to be a gamer.

Luckly I was still young enough to not skip a beat of it. Ultimately the Snes pwned, but man some of the Sega games were darn good

Oh, how I miss the classics.

SNES, N64, SEGA Genesis, Gameboy Pocket/Color, Dreamcast, and PSX (mostly known as PS1 but the BIG one) I've played NES too but I never own one.

I used to have about nearly 30 SNES games. lol Kirby's 8 in one pack was one of the best.

The reason why SNES owned so much was the variety of incredible games. A lot of people talk about the variety of PS2 games, but let's not forget that most PS2 games are extremely unoriginal for the most part. The SNES had revolutionary games for nearly every genre.

Although the 4th gen was my favorite, the 3rd was my original. I enjoyed the hell out of the NES up until....it went SUPER!

Where's the Spectrum in this?

Second Gen.

All these youngsters think that the fourth was the pinacle of gaming rivalry, but they have no idea of the vemon that went into the Spectrum vs C64 debates held in British playgrounds up and down the country.

The second generation saw greater varity of game genres than any other (and its fair share of gawd awful games too) and came at a time where graphics had no choice but to take a back seat to playability.

I'm still of the firm contention that greatest game lists should have far more second generation titles in them than they currently do.

Third for me. Got my NES when I was but a knee high Mario fan. Played my neighbors Master System at least once a week.

But I agree that 4th gen was the "golden age" imo.

Anyone remember the 3DO commercial?

But I agree that 4th gen was the "golden age" imo.

No offence, but that's crap.

The Golden Age of video gaming has always been considered the 2nd generation which, runs from the mid 70s to the mid 80s.

It is this period when arcade games really took off with titles such as Space Invaders, Defender, Donkey Kong and Asteriods. In the home computer market, especially in the UK the C64 and the ZX spectrum were exploding into a whole new teenage pastime, creating bedroom coders such as the like of Matthew Smith and the Oliver Twins. And of course this is the era that saw the Atari VCS appear in living rooms all over the world.

Titles such as Elite, Manic Miner, Pitfall and Mission Impossible sold these home consoles as much as conversions of the arcade classics mentioned above and stand next to them in terms of game development.

The scope of video games at this time was just amazing. There were no limits on the genre or playable aspects of a game. No demographics had to be hit. It was an era that saw dozens of genres of games rather than the six or seven we have now.

The fourth generaion was a very important era in video games, and I'll agree that it was an era that did just as much to insert video gaming in the public conciousness as the second, but it wasn't and never will the "The Golden Age."

For me it wold be the 4th generation and the SNES and Sega Genesis competetion was in full swing. At school in the early to mid 90s we would trade games for 2 - 4 week period, and we had a full rotation system going, so if you only had a couple or even one SNES or Sega game you would have ended up playing EVERY game in the SNES or Sega library before you left school. It really brought everyone together. That was for me the best time to be a gamer..

I was a video game player during the third generation(i owned a NES).While i enjoyed third and forth generation(i have both SNES and Mega Drive)i believe that fifth generation was the last great gaming period.I mean playstation had so many classic and original games. The first four tomb raiders,Resident Evil 1 and 2,Metal Gear Solid,Tenchu,Sillent Hill,Crash Bandicoot etc.So many great games. After this period i have turn myself on PC.PS2 games, while impressive in terms of graphic and control system(more capabilities during gameplay)never manage to keep my interest for more than one month(while before i could play a game for many months or even years without losing interest).
