Mary-Kate in Film Clinch With Kingsley

Wednesday, August 15, 2007

(08-15) 16:06 PDT New York (AP) --

Brace yourself: In her upcoming movie, Mary-Kate Olsen locks lips with Ben Kingsley. Yes, the one-time adorable tyke turned teenage titan, and Gandhi. Not surprisingly, the film's a comedy.

Olsen is now 21. Kingsley is 63.

Their film, "The Wackness," is slated for release next year.

"There is a very passionate scene in the film, which we filmed last week," Kingsley, who won the best-actor Oscar for 1982's "Gandhi," tells the syndicated TV show "Access Hollywood" in an interview scheduled to air Wednesday.

"It went extremely well and she was very focused. She was very good, very professional. She was quite wonderful."

When asked if he thinks the scene will stir up controversy, Kingsley says: "I'm sure it will. (Her character) is this great free spirit, you know, she is equally seducing so it is a level playing field."

In the film, Kingsley plays a therapist who forms a friendship with a teenage drug dealer (Josh Peck) who trades pot for therapy sessions. Olsen portrays one of the dealer's customers, who winds up kissing Kingsley's character.

"It's for a few seconds and then we disappear and we never see each other in the movie," Kingsley says. "But she is a trigger into my quest for happiness."

Though brief, the scene left a good impression on him. "Mary-Kate has huge energy," he says. "She is very, very committed to her work."

Olsen, who rose to fame on TV's "Full House," was last seen on the big screen opposite her sister, Ashley, in 2004's "New York Minute."

Kingsley's film credits also include "House of Sand and Fog" and "Schindler's List."

And he's your father.

My Dad is difficult. I feel on and on guard around him. Best case scenario is that I entertain him for a little while and feel drained by the time I get home.

But there's also an element of danger to it all.

My brother lives with him. He has a nasty drug problem. He gets into fights, has some pretty trashy people around him at the house, and he's taken to brandishing a knife during fights.

It's just a shitstorm of drama.

Luckily, my half brother is letting me stay overnight with him when I visit now. Dad doesn't even tell me about the really dangerous stuff. I just find it out when I'm around.

You should have seen last summer when my brother started carrying a handgun....

Which is really annoying, because the fourth is so good.

If you can (be prepared for it to be hellaciously difficult), I'd recommend tracking down 'The Nargun & The Stars' by Patricia Wrightson. It's a neat little Australian kids' fantasy thing.

I think Arm-Fall-Off Lad has the edge there.
I don't know that Face-Driller Kid has what it takes. Hrm. It all depends in whether he can find other, more practical uses for his super-face-drilling than self-multilation.

I loved it when they tried to change Arm-Fall-Off Lad's name to Splitter and make him a serious character.

And hell, even if Face-Driller Kid doesn't get in, he still gets a natty flight belt.

I am gradually trying to make all my Internet passwords the same one, because I can't remember them.

No, it isn't "loser123."

This is what I do. My password is the name of a very obscure foreign movie, spelled backwards, with a two digit number derived from the title added.

You say that like it's a good thing. Blu-Ray looks like the Betamax (another Sony product) of the next decade.

I don't use my game system to watch movies. I have a separate HD, composite video, six audio track, DVD-player for that. Overkill.

Actually, Sony and a few others will only be releasing their movies on Blu-Ray. Universal is the only studio that will be releasing exclusively HD-DVD. Blockbuster and Target will only be selling Blu-Ray and no HD-DVD at all. So if anything HD-DVD is the betamax of the new frontier.

I've been hearing that Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD as far as the actual discs. Some were saying Blu-Ray just sounds... sexier.

There's no way of knowing right now which format will win, but the current trend is towards Blu-Ray. The key is the software, which is what drives hardware sales. Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD consistently 2-1, and the most recent dual format release, 300--the biggest selling HD disc in any format so far--is outselling the HD-DVD version 3-1.

The biggest selling point for HD-DVD right now is price--the best selling HD-DVD player is about half what a stand alone Blu-Ray player costs. Blu-Ray has the PS3 and a bunch of studios behind it, with only Universal among the major studios going exclusively HD-DVD.

I think what Athena said here has some merit. HD-DVD was thought to have the name advantage at first because it sounds like DVD, but it may be that this is a disadvantage, and Blu-Ray sounds more high tech, more advanced.

The technological differences aren't really all that great when it comes to the end user--the picture and sound from a Blu-Ray and an HD-DVD are going to be about the same.

We'll see. If Blockbuster, Sony, Target, et al., are asking their customers to completely replace their DVD collections in order to sign onto a new system, I'm skeptical. That's a huge middle finger, and for most of us, a law of diminishing returns for quality. I really don't need Blu-Ray to come as close to a cinema experience as the technology already allows me to do.

And again, I'm a Sony whore, and have a TV, DVD Player, receiver, and PS2 already, and I'm not budging.

This is like how DAT was going to replace the CD, I assume.

No need. The players are backwards compatible, and all come with a scalar that can upconvert standard definition discs to the various HD formats, depending on what your TV accepts. The PS3 with the latest firmware upgrades is a very good upconverter.

This isn't to say that standard def discs will look as good as HD discs. They won't, but a well authored SD disc is still going to look very good upscaled through a good player. It's the poor transfers that really stand out. The upscaling process and higher definition tends to reveal flaws that were already there on discs that were designed for smaller screens. Typically the biggest problem is edge enhancement, which a lot of transfers add to. This can make the picture look a little bit sharper on a small screen at the cost of some detail, but when you blow the picture up and show it in a higher resolution you get what looks like static around sharp edges, which can be very distracting.

In some cases, the biggest advantage is in the sound rather than the picture; HD discs of both formats come with uncompressed soundtracks, though it's currently a little tricky to get the track to your receiver because nothing is up to full HDMI compliance yet.

We have a PS3, but there's no way we'd have gotten a HD player at this point if it didn't also play games. Wait a year or two and you'll have hardware that is fully HDMI 1.3 compliant, cheaper, faster, and there'll be a substantial library available.

Remember, Beta-Max was the superior technology to VHS.

There's a company making a player that will play both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. It's more expensive, but if you're that into HD, I suppose it's worth it.

LG has the most widespread dual format machine, for about $1200 right now, but there are rumors that either they or Samsung are going to be releasing a newer budget version this fall.

Think there was stuff on the Blu-Ray 300 that wasn't on the HD-DVD 300.

The only difference I'm aware of is that the HD-DVD has the PIP feature, which shows the raw footage of each scene in a window as the movie is being played. This was left off of the Blu-Ray version because BD players haven't implemented the feature yet.

Again, it's the law of diminishing returns. How much is enough?

I know people who get misty-eyed talking about the scratch-effect on their LPs missing on their CDs. And people who spend more money than I can believe to complete Atari 2600 collections.

Again, maybe I'm old, but I usually have problems telling the difference between a $5,000 speaker and a $500 one. (Not unlike a $200 bottle of wine and a $35 one most times.)

That's because there really isnt' much difference. The law of diminishing returns kicks in pretty heavily once you get past speakers in the $500-$1000 each range. You can get some very nice speakers for $5,000, and the improvements above that price roll off considerably--anyone other than a music expert and audiophile is going to have difficulty telling the difference.

Then again, I'm neither. I can't tell the difference between an MP3/iTunes track and a CD track.

Speaking of poo poo:

One thing to expect on a seriously low carb diet is constipation.

You can use those fiber supplements, eat low carb veggies like spinach, and drink plenty of water to mitigate this somewhat.

But I'm talking about ketogenic diets (less than 10 grams of carbs per day). The South Beach Diet might give you enough fiber to avoid that.

Back up.

You see 15 year olds reading?

I was at a remaindered bookstore yesterday and a Mom came in with her two boys (maybe 8 and 10) and asked the clerk if they had any Mad magazines or Simpsons comics. He sort of waved towards the back of the store. Nice.

I had just been flipping through every box they had - so I pointed to where I had seen the Bongo stuff and the boys dug in. I pointed to the old Mads they had - but I don't think the lads were all that interested in reading a Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman parody.

To be fair, I think he was pricing used Porn DVDs (they are in a separate part of the store) - so I think he was trying to keep the kids' moving along. Of course, this begs the question as to why they don't price it in that separate part of the story - but I digress.

I see the lack of effort all of the time and it doesn bug me. There are plenty of new readers or people trying to get guidance on buying something for a loved one that are very intimidated and confused by the comic book world. Would it be too much to ask a clerk to put down their Yu-Gi-Oh cards and actually get out of their chair to provide some assistance.

This place I was visiting is more than a little disorganized, so people need extra help.

That sounds like the guy who goes to the baseball stadium with the scorebook, meticulously recording every tip, tap and ding, able to give you the average of every player to 5 digits vs. BOTH lefties and righties, but when you say: "MAN! that was a hell of a double play Concepcion turned in the seventh, wasn't it? I agree on this. It's tiresome to hear a discussion of fantasy stats, picks, etc. every hour of every day. Most of the discussions are monumentally uninformative as well. Like anyone needs to know who the "Top 10 RBs" are. Again. The trick in ffl is to find something in the second- or third-tier guys.

It does cause some dilemmas, for sure. I would rather lose in all of my fantasy leagues and have the Bears win the Super Bowl, so it gets difficult when I have players playing against Chicago.

That's no dilemma at all. When playing against the Packers, I hope all of my ffl guys suck ass. There's no loyalty in ffl that trumps your loyalty to your team. Last year, I had the Bears D in one of my leagues and could have won the league had not the Packers blown the Bears out of the water and I could not have been happier. Even if the game itself meant nothing, it's always a happy day to watch the Packers beat the Bears.

Well, here's a fantasy baseball take on that:
