I tend to not be cheery but I like being up early because it is quiet and I can slowly ease into the day at my own pace.

Hey Jesse... sorry I was such a poo-head last night. No idea why I was so bitchy.

I did think you were out of line, but I was far, faaar worse.

I await my ban that I am sure is coming.

In other news, the mods on my local community eList are getting on my nerves.

Is it a sign of mid-life crisis that, as age 40 approaches in October, I'm thinking of getting a tattoo....specifically, the Japanese symbols for peace - heiwa -- put on my shoulder?

Someone tell me I'm either crazy or not crazy at this point.

You're not crazy.

hmmm....

Is there a Japanese symbol for "me love you long time?"

For the record, it's cool for you folks to fight and all that. I don't expect people to be all hugs and kisses all the time. And it's cool to not like everyone, and even say you don't like another poster.

Just do not let it devolve into insults and nonsense like that.

That's both a deevolution AND an escalation, and it just isn't gonna fly, so just putting that warning out there - do not seriously start calling other posters "assholes" or "douchebags" or whatever.

I will hand out some bans, so be forewarned for when I get, "What? Why did ____ get banned?," etc.

If it were me - I wouldn't do it. Watching the way my body has shifted over the last 15 years makes me glad that I didn't get a tatoo when everyone I knew was getting them circa 1990.

If you are going to do it - make sure you know want to see it there in 10 years, 20 years etc...

Personally, I think you should get a CCA stamp tatoo.

Yeah. I knew I'd get voices of reason here. I have shifted pretty significantly in the last fifteen years or so myself. Gravity is a cruel mistress.

The CCA stamp is a cool idea. Not looking for a huge tat though, so that might be problematic.

Matt's right though, that it should be unique. Maybe I could run a contest here in CBR and pick the best entry. I'll then take a picture of the tattoo and post it for posterity.

No superheroes, dragons, cartoon characters, kanji/yin yang/barbed wire/peace symbols, or other cliched stuff that's going to get me laughed out of the retirement home and roundly ridiculed by my grandkids.

Hmmmm......

Man, I hate when my own password protection ways defeat me.

I used to have a great memory for numbers. There was a time I had 10 different email addresses, each with a 16 digit alphanumeric password.

Over time, I forgot all of them.

Well, now I have three accounts that need alphanumeric passwords. I have written clues in a couple of places, so I can recall them when needed. The clues point in one way...and I know it is not the way the password lies. It's merely a reminder of what the password can be.

Well, today I was stumped for a while trying the clue of the password, thinking it *was* the password.

Thank God I gave myself a mental slap and remembered the right way.

The podcast Security Now had an interesting idea for passwords:

Come up with one or more password algorithms. If necessary, write the algorithms down and keep them in your wallet. You use the website's name or URL as part of the process of generating the password (and of course, they recommend that it include letters and numbers).

If somebody gets the algorithm, there's a good chance they won't even know what they've got (so your password would still be safe).

Here's a copy of the Security Now transcript (http://www.grc.com/sn/SN-004.htm).

Though it takes me a small amount of time, I can memorize 25-digit numbers. There's a mneumonic system for it that works quite nicely.

How about just a delivery date stamp or something scribble to make you look like you're part of the Edgar Church or Lamont Larson collection?

The woman who cut my hair when I was a kid had a very simple, black tatoo of The Saint . To this day, it's still one of the coolest tatoos I've every seen.

I do - ever year. It's like Christmas when it comes out.

I track the pricing changes year to year - but I love all the photos and information. I always find some new and obscure bit of info everytime I read it.

Steve Ditko drew a Chuck Norris comics, who knew?

I also love the ads and market reports - great fun for me.

Just got back from Kat's doctor's office. The baby is doing fine - hearbeat was 150 and the head is down.

We are both convinced it will be a boy, perhaps because that is all that we know.

In other non-news - Logan has a rash, we think it is from his sunscreen.

In trying to prevent him from getting red, we made him look like a tomato.

Oh, so true.

DC Silver moves for a fraction of Overstreet - some strange stuff (mostly obscure horror, esoteric Golden Age stuff) can go way over Guide. I've found that early Marvel Silver (pre-1965) really attracts attention too.

For all of its flaws, eBay has become the most accurate comic book exchange - it's quite a democratic process.

Dr. Ray, I presume.

That's exactly what our Doc suggested.

I guess there's a lot of funky crap in sunblock.

Logan is a daycare 2 days a week now, and I know that they put a lot on before outdoor play. Yesterday, they were playing outdoors with water so Logan had his shirt off, with a ton of sunblock on. Guess where the rash was the worst?

The daycare supervisor said that her son has a similar problem. She just kept him in long sleeve shirts rather than use sunblock.

Kat has just grabbed some Benadryl and is heading up to the daycare (it's 2 minutes from our house) to give him some.

I was a Sony whore through the Playstation and PS2.

I'm starting to take a serious look at the 360 for me, and alternatively, the Wii for the kids. 360s are available though, Wiis are completely sold out.

The PS3 looks like a disappointment so far, particularly in anything in new games that are anything but souped-up PS2 rehashes, which suprises me, because I thought Sony played for keeps.

I think the PS3 has promise. It was just overly-ambitious and like most overly-ambitious consumer electronics, it came out the door as a let-down. I know it's a rehash of an Xbox game, but Ninja Gaiden Sigma looks absolutely stunning. I probably won't pick one up for a few years though.

My dad has an awesome tattoo of a boxing rooster on his shoulder. Its faded a lot since its over 25 years old . He did tell me he wishes he never had it put there since as he ages the tat will look pretty sad ..if its still visable.

Got all 3 next gens. PS3 has been a dissapointment so far(only using it to play PS2 games as of now). Wii hasn't been gangbusters, but they have a great holiday lineup this year. Xbox 360 has consistently kept me happy, and looks to have an awesome next few months as well.

I agree. I'm just surprised they didn't have four or five "foundation" games rolled out at release along the lines of Madden 2001, God of War, Gran Turismo 3 or 4, SSX, etc. I've only seen two or three new PS3 games worth considering in buying in the system. That's no enough. Not like Sony at all.

The Wii is owning them, and the 360 has a steady and growing fanbase.

I love my Wii even though I haven't played it all summer, but then I never really play video games in the summer. Smash Bros, Mario Galaxy, and Mario Kart all look great.

But the 360 is getting Too Human as well as Eternal Sonata, which means I'll pick one up.

Guitar Hero 3 and Rock Star are both only for 360 and PS3.

You know PS3 will get the next Final Fantasy and Killzone 2 is already garnering major attention, plus I am sure Katamari will come and then there is the Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Sly Cooper series out there. I think this time next year PS3 is going to be a very different beast.

There's logistical reasons for the PS3 not having AAA titles at launch. Programmers are still learning how to use it. It's a pretty complex SDK and a hardware design totally unlike anything ever programmed for. Sony's released tools now to really speed up the development process, but it's still pretty complex. The Wii is a breeze to program for in comparison. The PS3 will likely have a lot of top-tier exclusives as time goes by, SCE: WWS is the largest game developer in the world now, employing more people than even EA.

How? I thought Metal Gear Solid 4 was exclusive to the PS3?

I'm not a huge fan of first or third person shooters, personally. I'm more interested in the RPGs along the lines of Marvel Ultimate Alliance, the sports games (Tiger Woods golf in particular), and the driving simulators.

I'm buying the game and will wait for a price drop on the system if by that time the system is not in a reasonable range.

We were working back a few years ago and this guy owned a tattoo shop. He really loved the tat (sketched it down for his shop). He put over how the lines and drawing was pretty damn good for whoever done it back then (1970's) , he offered to recolor and dress it up with some new touches for free. My dad turned him down saying he just wants it to fade away because he'll feel silly with it as he gets older.

So can a digital bitch.

She wears her leather just to satisfy
she really throws it around
There ain't one thing she can't afford to buy
she's the richest bitch in town

Her big fat daddy was a money machine
he made a fortune from computers
She's got more money than I've ever seen
but she's a greedy emotional looter

Keep away from the digital bitch
Keep away from the digital bitch
Keep away from the digital bitch
She's so rich, the digital bitch

She's got five rollers and a fine estate
a big house up on the hill
She throws parties just to celebrate
her life is just one enormous thrill

She buys poor people just to have around
She has a trophy for each lover
The bitch is rich but baby pound for pound
she's got a lot more to discover

Maybe she could please me if I saw beneath her veil
But she's just an imitation woman up for sale

She got so famous that she's on TV
She's got a professional smile
But I switch over 'cos she ain't for me
She disturbs me all the while

She looks so happy but she's got it wrong
she's always going faster
She sings her life to such a different song
she needs a loving and dominant master

We'll see. If Blockbuster, Sony, Target, et al., are asking their customers to completely replace their DVD collections in order to sign onto a new system, I'm skeptical. That's a huge middle finger, and for most of us, a law of diminishing returns for quality. All I know is that I want to run out and buy a good DVD player - keep it in a box for 15-20 years and open it when my kids are ready to get into classic cinema and great old TV shows.

I can't tell you how much coin my father spent buying a new turntable and new vinyl to upgrade his old collection. He's turned his back on digital music in the home. In the car, on an airplane? That's fine - but at home Miles Davis and Creedence still spin at 33.3 RPM.

I keep them because we're never going to see those versions of the movies ever again.

I have those on DVD copied over from the original laser disks. They're not for sale.

I remember the one family in my neighbourhood that had a Laser Disc player. They had a 3 disc collection:

1. Das Boot (sure - why not?)
2. Gandhi (classic- no doubt)
3. Zapped! (huh?)

Needless to say - it wasn't until I was about 30 that I'd seen Gandhi more times than Zapped.

I know people who get misty-eyed talking about the scratch-effect on their LPs missing on their CDs. And people who spend more money than I can believe to complete Atari 2600 collections.

Again, maybe I'm old, but I usually have problems telling the difference between a $5,000 speaker and a $500 one. (Not unlike a $200 bottle of wine and a $35 one most times.)

Yay, at job #1 I get to work the floorset for the girls sleepwear/dorm clothes section next Friday!

I say 'yay', since our selection of the stuff is pretty much the intimates (sans bras and select styles of underwear, mostly the lace-y fancy crap), some boxer shorts, a nightgown (in 3 different colors) and sleepwear tanktops. So there won't be much crap to haul around and set up like the last one.

Only problem it's from 8pm-1am -in theory- and I have to work at job #2 later that Saturday at 11am.

Laser disc players are really cheap, even the good ones, and the laser discs are in the cheapo bins.

It's almost like the turntable and LP market.

AND! I'm finding myself to be more and more like my neighbor was last decade. When I finally got around to getting a DVD player he was like "Why? My VHS is fine." Well, now that the price is dropping on DVDs with the advent of BluRay, and the DVD players can "upgrade" your output signal to near HD, I'm sort of like he was. "Why? My DVDs are fine."

I just empathize with that scene in Men in Black where Tommy Lee Jones says: "I'm going to have to buy the White Album all over again."

Of course, not knowing anything about anything as a 9 year old - I wanted ot share comic book collecting with my Dad, I went out a bought some old Blackhawks.

Not questioning why they were so cheap - I hauled a few home and showed them to him. He politely flipped through them and thanked me. I could tell something was wrong, but wasn't sure what.

Did Toku King (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/member.php?u=25599) forget who he was signed in as, or do he and smoothjokes (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=186618) just happen to have the same avatar?

But somewhere there is a video of me singing "Hollaback Girl" in the internet.

All I can say is, thank god there was no such thing as a cell phone camera or the internets back when I drank large amounts of whiskey on a regular basis.

I concur. I actually thought about the subject last night as to how candidates are going to live down their Google caches twenty years from now.....

"Sir, are you in fact hanging brain in this photograph?" (Don't ask if you don't know)

But somewhere there is a video of me singing "Hollaback Girl" in the internet.

BTW, let's take a closer look at that Wordsworth quatrain. Ignoring the sentiment (TRANS: I had a Godgasm).

"A presence that disturbs me with the joy
Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime
Of something far more deeply interfused,
Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns"-

Would even C.S. Lewis have written a book called Disturbed by Joy? I doubt it. Is one disturbed by elevated thoughts? Not so much. And what are "elevated thoughts" anyway, outside of thoughts you have on the 17th floor. Which is usually "bugger, I forgot to press 4". And does a theophany actually have to do with thoughts in any case?

"a sense sublime" -- the inversion preserves the scansion, but at the cost of drawing attention to the word "sublime", which is a classic of the 'tell, don't show" genre. "interfused" here is showy and obscure, and doesn't seem much more than a synonym for "sublime". But fair enough. Let's say that there's an apprehension of the immanent. Problem is, the line focuses on the word "sense" -- it's the noun modified by sublime, so it's his sensation that takes preeminence rather than the immanence itself.

"Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns" -- and this is where it really falls apart. It's sublime, it's interfused (whatever that might mean), which makes it universal -- and yet it's dwelling is the light of setting suns. Not so universal after all, then. Of course we're not talking about dwelling. We're talking about the emotional state being synaesthetically symbolized by a sunset. And suddenly we're sitting on a pushme-pullyou; are the thoughts/emotions rising or setting? In any case, twilight is associated with plangency (if not passivity), and not the disturbing joy of elevated thoughts.

"suns" is a bit odd, too. Seems like scansion preservation to me, but either the poet has been taken by little green aliens to visit alpha centauri, or he's talking about successive sunsets, in which case he's failed to actually make his point because he's trying to big it up; and in any case, is the light the same in every sunset, and are we talking about the pink bit, or the rayon vert as the sun sinks below the waves, or the light on the clouds if there are any clouds, or the light in the Mediterranean, or the light on a cold wet evening in the Dales, or something else entirely? Search me.

I'd prefer "there's a feeling I get when I look to the west", really I would.

Anyway, what we're getting here, if I read this correctly, is that the poet associates immanence with ego-dissolution (the setting sun), but is unable to face that directly, preferring to focus on his own sensation and the elevated thoughts to which it gives rise -- i.e. what we're reading, I suppose. Yay God!

But I'm still feeling neither the joy nor the disturbance, only the placid tranquility of somone shagged out after a long ramble.

Did I mention that I bloody hate Wordsworth? :D

I love my Wii even though I haven't played it all summer, but then I never really play video games in the summer. Smash Bros, Mario Galaxy, and Mario Kart all look great.

But the 360 is getting Too Human as well as Eternal Sonata, which means I'll pick one up.

I just bought Resident Evil 4 last week. That's not usually my kind of game (Mario Kart is more my speed), but it's AWESOME. I can actually accurately shoot using the remote. I was hopeless with the the controller. Anyway, ZOMBIES! WEEE!

Netflix (http://www.netflix.com) is the best. I don't know why I waited so long to sign up.

And I doubt they'll go exclusively Netflix Blu Ray.

Slogging through the morass that is the Bioshock TRU early release has left me drained, disillusioned, and with nothing to show for it.

Oh, well. At least I got Persona 3 today.

AS kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies dráw fláme;
As tumbled over rim in roundy wells
Stones ring; like each tucked string tells, each hung bell’s
Bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad its name;
Each mortal thing does one thing and the same:
Deals out that being indoors each one dwells;
Selves—goes itself; myself it speaks and spells,
Crying Whát I do is me: for that I came.
