Geez, nervmeister is back already? Was that a 48 hour ban? Time to plug in the Air Wick.

Anywho......

Couple of quick movie reviews:

"300": Meh. Good, but not great. I wish I had rented instead of bought it. Good imagery, a little too much on the stylistic violence, not so much on the underlying Spartan code. This was a popcorn movie, plain and simple, and reading homoeroticism and racism into it was giving it WAY, WAY too much thought. Still, in my mind, incredibly overrated. I might as well have been watching it in a persistent vegetative state. I personally thought Snyder's "Dawn of the Dead" was a much more superior movie, with much more subtlety and nuance (there was no equivalent to a Ving Rhames, Sarah Polley or Jake Weber here), in addition to the visually striking violence present in 300. Rental. Not 2-Day.
I should really be getting a commission from them for as often as I plug them, but there's already a rifftrax for 300 (http://rifftrax.com/showSample.php?vidID=80).

I deny this claim.

Ow! God dammit!

Advil?

Saw the doctors again today. Effexor is right out. Giving Wellbutrin a shot for a week. Hopefully the side effects won't be as bad.

I need some gorram sleep.

Finished up Season 2 of Doctor Who last night. I love that show.

You know what we need? We need a good old fashioned book burning (http://wkrg.com/news/article/inappropriate_book/4373/).

It's Mobile. Of course they're going to interview the morons who highlighted the dirty parts and committed them to memory like they were going to be tested on it. Local news, slow news day.

Hope the mouthbreathers locked out every cable channel but Sprout! and PBS Kids as well, disconnected the Internet, and avoided any reading material saucier than Harold and the Purple Crayon, or else their eight-graders might actually get to understand that sex happens, and that reading about it doesn't actually constitute FUCKING.

I checked their horribly unscientific poll and it's running about 2/3 for banning the book. Silly. [edit: I just checked back, and that's based on three votes, one of which is me. Heh.]

And it makes me laugh when people start talking about a book that talks about masturbation "giving the kids ideas". Guess what, papaw, every 13 year old boy is thinking about sex ALL THE TIME, is worrying about getting hard ALL THE TIME, and is thinking about touching a girl's breast ALL THE TIME.

Here's the "objectionable" part, from their petition, which I'll then quote in full. Educators and people from Alabama, prepare to be shamed.

The petition, in all its glory.

Mobile County Public School System requires twelve and thirteen year old children to read a book filled with perversions, profanity, violence, and morally corrupt themes.

One of the books on the required reading for the summer for Hankins Middle School is The Chocolate War written by Richard Cormier. The Chocolate War, since itҒs publication has been near the top of the most frequently censored books. According to Banned in the U.S.A. by Herbert Foerstel, a book which documented the most frequently censored books according to public schools and libraries in the U.S. between 1990-1992, The Chocolate War is number five.

Hankins Middle School Assistant Principle for the eight grade, Mrs. Martin, admitted to the fact that they (an unspecified group at the school) had concerns about the book being required reading. She claimed that the required reading list came from downtown at the school board. She also made us aware that a copy of the book was indeed available in the Hankins school library.

The following is excerpts from the book and their relative page numbers. We find offensive and inappropriate: ғlike seeking ecstasyŒs memory an instant after jacking off page 5, ԓ The use of the word bastard three times and like a God damn kingŔ page 7 .Ŕthese God damn assignments page 13. Talks about playboy magazines at schoolԅpage 17 tired of smuggling it into the bathrooms for swift perusalsŅ Fear that he would die before holding a girls breast in his handӔ. Page 18, őNow the final moment, the climax, almost like comingԅ..Page 35 Like how he sometimes actually felt horny when he rough housed a kidӔPage 51 œhumiliated by this sniveling bastard of a teacherԅ. Page 73, at night in bed, he could have one without evening touching himself, just thinking of her Ӆ.her breast brushing his arm, setting him of fire. Page 93, őhed felt himself hardening and was ashamed and embarrassed and deliriously happy all at the same timeҔ him with this beautiful girls breast pushed against himԔ faded blue jeans hugging her hips, those Beautiful breasts bouncing under her jerseyӔ . Page 94, œArchie had pulled open the door to one of the stalls and confronted Janza sitting there, pants dropping on the floor, one hand furiously at work between his legs. Archie lifted the camera and pretended to take a picture, yelling hold itӔ, Page 104, There are two kinds of people in this world, those who were victims and those who victimizedӔ Page 106, œHer sweater had bulged beautifully, her school books pressed against her rounded breast. If my hands were only those books, he thought longinglyԅ. Page 123

In the first 132 pages the following curse words are used: hell 20 times, bastard 9 times, God damn 3 times, damn 5 times, shit 1, bullshit 2, son of a bitch 2 times, and ass twice.
This by all means are not all of the references one could find offense with in the book. We have archived enough to make our case. With language like this can you imagine the after book reading discussions in class? Are the teachers and administration ready to deal with the questions that could come up, regarding the language and themes of this book? Could our children repeat these words in discussion without the fear of punishment according to the established rules of conduct?

The theme of the book is not to disturb the universe. The main character of the book, Jerry Renault, does just that when he chooses to stand up for his self. His defiance starts to wake up the other students in the school. The Vigils specialize in student and school terrorism. They start to manipulate the circumstances surrounding Jerry through fear, psychological warfare, physical abuse and manipulation of the students and administration of the school. The gang, aided by a manipulative teacher, Brother Leon, enjoys an almost untouchable status. They perpetrate assignmentsӔ on other students free from discipline or censor.

Jerrys defiance for doing what he feels is right gets him terrorized night and day by The Vigils. Jerry eventually suffers a fractured jaw and a trip to the hospital with possible internal injuries. There are no repercussions for those responsible for this reign of terror. Sadly, in the end, Jerry is forced to submit and he tells his friend not to try and disturb the universe because the repercussions just are not worth it.

What examples are here for our young children? Who at Barton Academy thought that this book needed to be read by twelve and thirteen year children and why?

As parents who are actively involved in the education and shaping of our own, tomorrowҒs leaders, we are both dismayed and angry to find that our partner in education finds the material in The Chocolate War, appropriate for the suggested age group as required reading.

A online petition has been set up and we want your response. Please go to the site and tell us what you think of this book being required reading by our school board. The Link to the site is www.petitiononline.com/ALA2007/petition.html .

In other news, the Golden Compass movie is approaching. Given the uproar over Harry Potter, why is nobody burning these books yet? It deals rather explicitly with the theme that maybe the human nature Christian churches seek to repress isn't actually evil. But, even worse, it has witches and talking bears! Devil's work, that.

I don't think that should be in theatres or in libraries. Where do I sign up for the protests? I've heard nothing. Why won't anybody think of the children?

Anyone else have BBC America?

Yes, it's one of the random cable channels I get with my stripped-down digital cable. I don't get channels like Bravo, IFC, Sundance and FX, but I do get BBC America, Comedy Central, G4, ESPN News (but not the other ESPN channels, hooray!) and TMC.

I think I read Flowers for Algernon in the 8th grade.

Think of the children!

Good question. I think the series still has cult status here in the U.S., for now it's under the book burners' radar. But I'm sure that will change when the movie comes out.

I watched the Robin Williams movie Man of the Year a couple days ago. I thought it turned out pretty good. Had some laugh out loud moments as well as some decent drama scenes. I know he's made a lot of crappy films lately, but I think this one turned out good.

I watched 300 last night. I liked it. It's not a GREAT movie, but I don't think it is as bad as others have said. Certainly better than Sin City.

Agent Helix
08-14-2007, 06:19 AM
300 just bored me, like an extended series of videogame cutscenes. I never really liked the book all that much, so I doubt I'm the target audience for a film version, anyway. Regardless, it left me without much enthusiasm for the Snyder-helmed Watchmen, since it seemed like he cut out even the tiny bit of characterization from 300.

It made me smile . . . but I got a little lost with all the names (I'm an old dog that has difficulty learning new tricks).

I like the panels where you cross-hatched the characters rather than just the backgrounds - for whatever that's worth. It gave them depth, and reminded me a little of Gary Larson's art (you have a similar dark humor).

Good morning. Win, its really violent and there is a relatively gratuitous love scene in it, but I loved the movie.

It's a little difficult to explain, but I have a 14 year old and an 11 year old. So I'm trying to transition my parenting from "do as I say" as a parent to "do as I do." So if I say you can't watch an R- rated movie . . they will think I am a hypocrite if I watch it.

I made an exception with my daughter with Pans Labyrinth. That's a fantastic movie.

Nathan had his first football practice last night. He's about a head taller than anyone else on his team. And he weighs more than anyone else as well. It was fairly tough for a first practice, but he was in good shape from swimming all summer. He has a lot to learn, but he was listening to the coach very attentively. About half the team are kids he's good friends with and has gone to school with his whole life (most of his scout troop is on the team). They'll all be at the same Jr. High and High School. So far, so good.

You certainly do need the connection - who else do you think will roll out the legal red carpet when US and European firms visit us to buy up all of our resource companies?

While billable hour targets are usually lower here than in New York (not sure the norm in DC) - in my group (Securities), anything under 2,000 was frowned upon.

That being said - the big, evil firms have their benefits. I moved offices yesterday, and I miss the good old days when I just had to ask my secretary to make on phone call and the whole thing was done smoothly over night.

I had to pack and unpack my own boxes. Oh, the humanity!

We live in a really small town...roughly 3,000 people. So he's gone to school, scouts and played sports with the same kids for six years now. About 1/3 the football team are kids from the other town of about 1,500 on the west side of the county. The two combine to make up the junior high that they start at this year.
