I've related this story, but my roommate filled in for the first three days of my class while I was in Canada. And he just pretended to be me. When I came back, I tried to just start teaching as though I'd been there all along. Led to some confusion. I was quickly accepted as their teacher. My roommate had failed to convince them he was a teacher, but he did convince them his name was Chris Nowlin and now they don't know who I am.

Also, he went to class drinking a Pepsi and telling them how good Pepsi was.

And, well... I related in another thread what happened to the Coke pyramid in my office.

So, my last question on tomorrow's midterm will involve 2 pictures. One of him in front of the Pepsi pyramid. One of me in a Coke shirt with a can of Coke.

The question will be: Which is your teacher? What is his name?

Sounds fun. The Air and Water show is this weekend, I am trying to get on some friend's boat, but they might not be interested, in which case it will be a shopping/look for Transformers day. I read about it the other day. See here. (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/showbiz/showbiznews.html?in_article_id=475222&in_page_id=1773)

Virgin tycoon Sir Richard Branson hurled a glass of water of a TV presenter after he was banned from talking about his new airline, according to reports.

The multi-millionaire, 57, was being interviewed by US political comic Stephen Colbert in front of a live studio audience in New York when he lost his cool.

But despite being drenched, the host, who Branson had named a plane after, refused to be phased. He demanded a bottle of water from aides and then retaliated by flinging it that over his multi-millionaire guest.

An unnamed member of the studio audience told New York's media website FishbowlNY: "Branson was apparently upset that he wasn't able to give a direct plug to the new Virgin service and doused Colbert with his guest mug of water.

"Stephen was drenched. He took a beat, then signalled for his own ammunition for about twenty seconds until Alison (Silverman) ran and gave him her bottle of water, and Stephen retaliated. The two of them sat for a very uncomfortable second looking like two wet cats.

"Then Stephen thanked him for coming. I really don't think it was planned, since Stephen had another bit to introduce and a full interview left to do.

I just read a fantastic review of it, I cannot wait.

Also I need to add this song from a cd I just got last night:

J - Lives are like retractable pencils
B - If you push 'em too far, they're gonna break.
J - And people are like paper dolls, mmmhmm yeah
B - Paper dolls and people, they're the very same shape

Both - Love is like a roll of cellotape
Real good for making two things one
J - But just like that roll of cellotape
Love sometimes breaks off before you're done

B - Another way that love is similar to Cellotape, that I've noticed
Is sometimes it's hard to see the end

J - Ain't that the truth, my friend
B - You search on the roll (search on the roll)
Search on the roll (search on the roll)
Search on the roll with your fingernail
Again and again and again and again...
And again...

Both - Brown paper, white paper,
Stick it together with cellotape, uh huh.
Ooooh yeah
Brown paper white paper,
Stick it together with cellotape, .
J - Oooo, that sticky stuff

*Mucho funky guitar strumming and humming goes on here....*

J - People people paper paper paper paper people people
people people pencil pencil pencil pencil paper paper
Put the pencil to the paper give the paper to the people
Let the people read about the cellotape, oh baby

*loud and screaching*
Come on! Come on, baby,

B - *Spoken* You know Jemaine, recently I've, um, I've been I've been thinking about love, about mutual love, that sort of love where two, you know two people, they love each other equally, like the love you have with, you know, with a loved one. And it's an equal love, and you give love equally, and it's, it's a feeling that's uh, it's amazing, it's this sort of, it's probably that, you know, it's a wonderful thing. It's love at its best, it's love, you know, it's, uh, it's, you know, it's probably the strongest adhesive available.

J - Looooong pause and deep breath *Spoken* "Full on"

Both - Ooooooh, yeah, ooooooooh yeah,
What a feeling, O, can you feel it
Stick it together, oh, stick it together
Stick it together, yeah, stick, stick it together
Oh, yeah.

Hmmm... Stephen Colbert interviews Richard Branson on August 22. And apparently it's a doosie of an interview.

I was in the studio audience for The Daily Show a few years back and Branson was the guest. It went very awkwardly after Branson, during a telling of some personal story, referred to a woman as a dirty negro, or something to that effect - I'll have to ask my friends if they remember. The audience kind of gasped and Stewart reacted to it. But instead of letting it go, Branson admonished us (the audience and Americans in general) for being overly PC. Stewart was kind of stunned and the interview fell apart. Watching the televised interview was amusing because the editing was pretty rough.

Mini-Movie Reviews: AFI Edition

Network: I hadn't seen this in many a moon, so it was interesting to revisit this formerly controversial flick about a newscaster who has a mental breakdown and since it starts kicking the ratings up when he melts down on the set, the network makes him the foundation of its programming. It was directed by Sidney Lumet, and stars William Holden, Faye Dunaway, Robert Duvall and Peter Finch. Paddy Chayefsky wrote the screenplay. It was an interesting viewing looking at in hindsight in 2007 versus 1975, because while it was prescient then, particularly in regard to corporate control of networks and their news divisions, Chayefsky actually undershot the target in terms of the packaging and marketing of news and the "edginess" of programming. The funniest moment might have been the meeting between Maoist revolutionary guerrillas and network officials on the programming costs and subsidiary rights to their weekly terrorist show. Ned Beatty also played the most interesting character I've ever seen him play. A far, far cry from Otto. Weaknesses include primarily the Holden/Dunaway romance subplot. Holden is referred to as middle-aged, but looks at least forty years older than Dunaway and their relationship is incredibly stilted, devoid of passion and generally unbelievable. Chayefsky also writes his screenplay like a stage play, and the soliloquies and eternal truths spouted by characters at random moments don't hold up as well on celluloid as they would spoken on stage.

Double Indemnity -- written by Raymond Chandler and Billy Wilder and directed by Wilder, this classic film noir stars Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson. The underlying premise is one of insurance fraud, double cross, and double, double cross as the walls start to close in around the murder plotters. I think Edward G. Robinson steals the picture, because his claims investigator Keys has so much screen presence and his line-reading is so effective that he blows MacMurray off the screen. The mystery is by now almost tame compared to today's standards, the romance is implied not shown, and the resolution rather predictable. But it's refreshing and interesting to see a film where there's not lines and lines of exposition explaining why one character does this, and what are the backstories and motives of every single character. It's a tight narrative and there's an internal tension in place almost from the first frame.

The Third Man -- Carol Reed's Vienna mystery starring Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles, from a screenplay by Graham Greene, this picture is almost a quantum leap from Double Indemnity in terms of complex layering of characters, motives, and secrets. The viewer is sat basically in the role of the Holly Martins character and forced to try to figure out the mystery while still trying to get the bearings of being in a foreign country with the varied Allied Powers of the U.S., England, France and the Soviet Union still running it like a jigsaw puzzle that barely fits together. Cotten plays it mostly straight, and keeps asking obvious questions that noone wants to answer. The ending is surprisingly downbeat and sober. Vienna is as much a character in this movie as any other, and the grand set pieces of marbled halls, high ceilings, and numerous works of art scattered throughout give it an old European royalty feel right off the bat. The soundtrack is done by a zither, and gives a unique, otherworldly feel to the proceedings.

I'll take dull.

It beats waking up screaming at your subconscious "LEAVE ME ALONE AND STOP TORTURING ME!" frightening the neighbors and causing the dogs to howl.

I'm not quite at that stage, but I'm close. My dreams usually involve me rushing from one place to the other, with occasional sexual interludes thrown in, but I'm always on the run. And there's never any resolution or finality, quest, sexual or otherwise.....my subconscious is always unfulfilled.

Hardly takes Joseph Campbell or Sigmund Freud to figure that stuff out....

Mini-Movie Reviews: AFI Edition

I'm not a big fan of Network. It seems very grounded in the 70s. And Peter Finch is far to over the top. The whole movie seems stagey.

It's been eons since I've seen Double Indemnity. I need to remedy that.

The Third Man is an amazing film. I agree wtih you when you liken Vienna to a character. But to me the most integral part of the film is the soundtrack. I don't think I've ever seen another film in which the music is such an enormous part of the whole structure of the movie. Cotton was a terribly underrated and underutilized actor. He's wonderful as the lead. And it's hard to believe Welles has as little screen time as he does, since his presence dominates the film.

Definitely one of my favorite films.

I'm glad someone is reading my mini-reviews, particularly because I respect you so much as a cineophile.

I was disappointed in Network. It's rolled out as a dark, cynical, twisted look at corporatism, but it IS very over the top across the board (Faye Dunaway chews scenery and so does Duvall, let alone Finch), about its "message" and so obscures what is a somewhat mediocre premise. And as I said, it's a play dressed up in ill-fitting movie clothes, with the Holden/Dunaway relationship laughable from the start. Too bad.

It's been eons since I've seen Double Indemnity. I need to remedy that.

I saw them in the order I listed them, and Double Indemnity almost flew by compared to the others, because it's a tight, packed narrative. And it does present a pretty firm gold standard for the genre that you can see has been imitated ad nauseum. And again, I like Edward G. Robinson, but he's absolutely excellent in this role.

I can't believe I had never seen this before. I know Selznick is attached to this and it's on the AFI list, but it does not feel like an American film, at all. I agree, Cotton is underrated. Clive Owen or Daniel Craig seem like modern-day equivalents, if there can be any. Slow, smoldering presence; a quiet understatedness that doesn't overwhelm the film. And I was glad to see they didn't go for the cheap happy ending. Like the rest of the film, it's wrapped in enigma and ambiguity. A great film experience.

I'm not a fan of Dunaway. Her typical mode of acting appears to be to over-act at all possible times.

All things considered, I'll go with Dick over Burroughs.

LOL yeah but Dick had his own weird addictions.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_K._Dick

On February 20, 1974, Dick was recovering from the effects of sodium pentothal administered for the extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth. Answering the door to receive delivery of extra analgesic, he noticed that the delivery woman was wearing a pendant with a symbol that he called the "vesicle pisces". This name seems to have been based on his confusion of two related symbols, the ichthys (two intersecting arcs delineating a fish in profile) that early Christians used as a secret symbol, and the vesica piscis.

After the deliverywoman's departure, Dick began experiencing strange visions. Although they may have been initially attributable to the medication, after weeks of visions he considered this explanation implausible. "I experienced an invasion of my mind by a transcendentally rational mind, as if I had been insane all my life and suddenly I had become sane," Dick told Charles Platt.[5]

Throughout February and March of 1974, he received a series of visions, which he referred to as "two-three-seventy-four" (2-3-74), shorthand for February-March 1974. He described the initial visions as laser beams and geometric patterns, and, occasionally, brief pictures of Jesus and of ancient Rome. As the visions increased in length and frequency, Dick claimed he began to live a double life, one as himself, "Philip K. Dick", and one as "Thomas", a Christian persecuted by Romans in the 1st century A.D. Despite his history of drug use and elevated stroke risk, Dick began seeking other rationalist and religious explanations for these experiences. He referred to the "transcendentally rational mind" as "Zebra", "God" and, most often, "VALIS". Dick wrote about the experiences in the semi-autobiographical novels Valis and Radio Free Albemuth.

In time, Dick became paranoid, imagining plots against him by the KGB and FBI. At one point, he alleged they were responsible for a burglary of his house, from which documents were stolen. He later came to suspect that he might have committed the burglary against himself, and then forgotten he had done so. This experience is mirrored in the Bob Arctor-Agent Fred character in A Scanner Darkly.

Dick himself speculated as to whether he may have suffered from schizophrenia. Mental illness was a constant interest of Dick's, and themes of mental illness permeate his work. The character Jack Bohlen in the 1964 novel Martian Time-Slip is an "ex-schizophrenic". The novel Clans of the Alphane Moon centers on an entire society made up of descendants of lunatic asylum inmates. In 1965 he wrote the essay titled Schizophrenia and the Book of Changes.[9]

Drug use was also a theme in many of Dick’s works, such as A Scanner Darkly and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. Dick was a drug user for much of his life. According to a 1975 interview in Rolling Stone [1], Dick wrote all of his books published before 1970 high on amphetamines. "A Scanner Darkly [published in 1977] was the first complete novel I had written without speed," said Dick in the interview. He also experimented briefly with psychedelics, but wrote The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, which Rolling Stone dubs “the classic LSD novel of all time,” before he had ever tried them.

Well, the grammar is irritating, at the very least.

And the term "world-wide recognized masterpiece" is relative. It doesn't make the underlying art immune or impervious to criticism, particularly informed, comparative and reasoned criticism. Saying "Because I said so" is not a valid form of critique. It usually doesn't fly here on the Comm board (or the Classics board and other boards for that matter).

What good would it be to try using logic on a three-year old. It's the same thing I go through with the inmates that I work with. I usually solve the problem by taking their juice away from them though, or making sure they dont' get it in the first place.
