I'm not kidding here, you will LOVE this. If you've got a heart then GUMBY's a part of you!
I hold no particular fondness for the original short films, but this book is a godsend. In an era of overwrought teethclenchy books, there's GUMBY, written and drawn by two of the industry's greatest minds.
The book is written by Flaming Carrot writer Bob Burden, with a whimsical and inventive style that amuses, saddens, and delights on nearly every page. Bizarre characters waltz in unannounced and become oddly dear in even brief cameos. This surrealism-on-the-fly is something many attempt but few master, and Bob is the acknowledged king of comic oddness that somehow still makes a complelling narrative.
Rick Geary is simply an underappreciated genius. I've loved everything he's ever worked on, from the sublime to the silly, and often, both are essential elements of his work. He draws the insane landscapes of the book with charm and wit and a master's skill, and the entire production just feels lush and perfect.
It's a great series. I believe there are three issues so far. Drop a book you're not enjoying and get this. It really IS a book the whole family can love.
