This is now my 4th Xbox 360. I'm posting this as a warning to others. When my xbox 360s have gone kablewy in the past I have found that when you put your account on a new system that your old downloadable content doesn't work unless you are connected to the internet. MS used to simply credit you points so you could redownload your games and stuff on a "dummy" account. Now they want you to DELETE EVERYTHING and REDOWNLOAD IT just to prove that that solution doesn't work. I have over 40 games, 15 tv shows, and I don't know how much game content. You can only have 7 things cued to download at once. BTW THIS DOESN'T EVEN WORK. Once you've downloaded everything again, you will find none if it works anyway so you just wasted your time. I got foreigners on the phone every time and was hung up on twice.
btw.. Nintendo replaced my Wii and when I got the replacement system back my downloaded games worked no problem. I got American techs on the phone.
MS sucks.

Really? I went through one 360 so far, took it back with my warantee, got a brand new one (or at least a refurbished old one with a cooling fan that works), and I was able to redownload my Oblivion content without having to delete it and pay for it again, and my trailers and game packs all worked fine.

Yeah, but have you tried using it when you aren't logged into the internet? I can use mine until my modem is down.. then I can't use anything. Everything becomes a "trial version."
Their horrible tech support that barely speaks english is also inexcusable.

I'm hardly ever connected to the Internet while on my XBox. Only when I need to download stuff or when I'm playing online.

At least you are keeping up with tradition Mr. I own multiple copies of every defunct overpriced console known to man. The next time there is a console war on I'm going to make the opposite choice of Ringslinger as that will be the console that wins the war.
All kidding aside never buy any console when it first comes out, as they are always buggy as hell. It's only when they get feedback such as yours that they hammer out all of the kinks.

Well then Lester m'man... learn from my pain. Wii is good. Wii tech support is > than Xbox support. Wii also has less technical issues. I'll let you know about PS3 when I can afford it. I'm going back to playing my f'n Dreamcast.

While not XBox related, I recently suffered a similar video game related tragedy.
It was a dark and stormy night. I had decided what better way to wile away the hours than to start playing FF XII. I pop in the disc, it loads up, and then I get a most horrifying message. "There is no memory card present in the system. Final Fantasy needs some amount of KB of storage to save games. Do you wish to continue?" A horrifying message because my memory card was indeed present.
I turned off the system and went to the browser to try and access the memory card that way. No data was all it would say. Now, I've got a memory card expander add-on that gives me an extra 24MB of storage. This is where all my saved games were. I clicked it over to the 8MB of storage on the regular memory card, and that worked. Brief moment of excitement! But when I switched back to the expander, nothing again. Growing ever more disheartened, I tried the second memory card slot, hoping against hope that perhaps the issue was with slot one. But alas, I received the same results there.
So I am in mourning. The past 5 years of video game saves, all of the proof of my beaten games, gone. I had at least 20 games on there, I'd say. The GTA series, Jak series, Ratchet and Clank series. Katamari, Shadow of the Colossus, Rogue Galaxy. And many more. I was lucky enough that the card had run out recently, and my Guitar Hero 2 and GH Rock the 80s saves were on the regular memory card. But my GH1 save was on the now dead expander. This is probably what hurts the most, since I had finally just been able to 5-star Bark at the Moon on medium difficulty.

Ok first I have had a 360 since day one and have no problems with that console or any other I have purchased. The reason I think is because of air or rather getting it to the systems ,air flow is very improtant dont keep any console in an inclosed area ,under your tv ,lying flat on your floor ,etc. Just saying air is good for them guys.

My 360 recently got into the habit of freezing up in the middle of doing something (playing a game/watching a dvd). I then have to shut it down and restart it, but I get this flashing red light and the thing won't power on. I have to leave it turned off and check back with it hours later. I have a cooling fan on it so it shouldn't be over heating, especially ten minutes into a movie and it's free standing with nothing else around it for at least a couple of feet on either side so airflow is not a problem. I don't know what the hell is wrong with the stupid thing.

Warranty is the solution here. You have a defective one. Call MS.

Man, and I thought having to blow on my old NES that I just brought into my new apartment was bad.
Also.. I kinda wish I read this before my roomate bought a 360 today. Then again, it is his machine and his worries, not mine.

Do not blow on NES cartridge connectors. It can only make the problem worse. Adjust how the cartridge sits in the slot instead. It is my sacred mission to correct this misconception wherever I encounter it.

Didn't MS recently extend the warranty on the damn thing because so many people are having problems with it?
Great engineering there!!

It's still the best console in my book.
I own all three. The 360 is the only one that has truly been worth it so far, IMO.

I've had my 360 for a year and a half and the only thing that happened was when I first got it I had to stand it upright which I know is not good for it but cause of limited space really had no option. After playing for about 10 minutes the games froze up and wouldn't play past that point again. I tried and tried but there was a ring in the disk that the system put there due to it being on end. Not really the system's fault but mine for being ignorant. Other than that its never over heated or anything and I love my 360.

Do you play it often? The reason why the bug slipped through had to do with the fact that it takes time to show up.

Now with the 360, I think the only console we don't have in the apartment amonst all my roomates is the PS3. Four of the five have their own Wii. We even have a Dreamcast.
(Okay, so we don't have a Sega CD, 32X, Saturn, Jaguar, 3DO, CD-I or Virtual Boy. Those sucked anyway. Though I think other recent ones are pretty well covered. 360, Wii, Nintendo DS, GBA, PS2, PS1, Dreamcast, NES, Genesis. Hell, I even got a Game Gear.)

Skyfire.. I'm not trying to pick on ya dude, but I'm not stupid. I'm aware that the 360 needs air. Mine rests atop my entertainment center in a well ventilated location; literally 2 feet from my air conditioner and all vents have at least a foot clear. I've owned almost every system since Pong and the Atari 2600 and all of them still work aside from my first PS2 (which Monkeyboy and friends helped me destroy in my driveway since it was out of warranty) and of course my growing collection of dead 360s.
1.5 billion dollars in MS warranty extensions aren't because the customers are too dumb to ventilate their 360s... its because MS didn't properly test their new console and they're largely defective.
I'm still enjoying the games, but this experience has turned me off from downloading content from XBLA marketplace since the way their DRM works creates a migrane when moving to a new system.
I'm curious to hear how Sony handles a similar situation in DRM. Is content locked to systems, gamer accounts, or hard drives? peh... makes my head hurt.
PS3 is getting the DC MMORPG... when that comes out, I'll serieously have to consider getting one.

Do you have billing statements on the consoles and other things you bought? Four times,in such a short span,it sounds to me you should consult a lawyer to see if you may have a case against microsoft. Before you naysay, you are NOT the only one with xbox 360 problems,to the point that MS is getting ALOT of media flack for the HUGE amount of problems with their consoles, and the large amount of losses MS will be enduring to pay for the repairs and shipping.
It just seems excessive.

I play at least 4 hours a day. I even carry the thing to work and play on breaks and lunch.

I called Microsoft today and sure enough, I have to send mine in for repair/replacement. The whole process is going to take about 4 weeks according to the rep. This sucks.

... aside from my first PS2 (which Monkeyboy and friends helped me destroy in my driveway since it was out of warranty)...
Good times. Good times.
Nothing like taking a few swings at a PS2 with a sledgehammer. We wanted the set the remains on fire and mail the left over bits to Sony but Ringslinger would let us start a fire in his yard.

The last console I bought was the Colecovision.

My friend is currently on his third 360. They just keep blowing up. I tell him not to buy anymore but he just won't listen.

I've read stories of people on their 12th or 13th machine. There comes a point when you just have to give up, and mine would be a long way before fucking 12 or 13. This reliability thing is the one reason (well, not counting money...) I'm not thinking about getting a 360 yet.

Well my first two I had purchased that warranty at EBgames... They replaced it, but I had to purchase a new warranty... extra forty dollars each time. Also MS gave me grief each time about replacing Marketplace Points to repurchase my games. They are locked to the system they are purchased on, which is stupid to cripple your software since if they hadn't I probably would've upgraded to an Elite system or something similar at some point.
They're tech support is awful verging on criminally bad. Considering that its their job to help with a system, you'd think MS would hire people that now something or anything about the system. I felt like I was trying to tell my mom how a supercomputer works.
Their solution is to delete ALL of your games and redownload them. Everytime I've been through this that is their solution. I feel like yelling at them and calling them some new and inventive bad words. Its like a sick practical joke at the expense of their customers. Redownload all 5gigs of content... it won't fix anything, but you'll get really pissed that you did it.
oh yeah.. I still have my Colecovision.. it still works. So does my Atari Lynx and 7800 systems. I miss my Commodore 64.
