I was just thinking about him while reading over the appreciation thread. I agree.

It's the price of being a hero. There was a flood or something catastrophic like that and Larry being Larry spent all of his time volunteering and helping out. That kept him away, and the price he was for his altruism was to illness due to his being out in the elements like that. I am proud of him, but he may be too noble for his own good.

Yeah, I miss him. I hope he's okay.

What's a Larry Dixon then? Is it, like, a cross between Chuck Dixon and one of the Three Stooges?

Heroes need their rest.
Yeah, that is true, but so do I...
Hey everybody. I appear, as if summoned! Because, you know, I kinda was.
Right now I am in a hotel room in Dayton Ohio. Earlier in the week I was on a rescue run picking up/diagnosing a Great Horned Owl when I got an urgent phone call. It was the bride-to-be of my best friend from Junior High School, saying that one member of the wedding party had to bail because of a work emergency. So, could I make it to Dayton to be a groomsman?
So I got the owl in the back seat to a vet & did an exam & got it pumped full of good-juice, and dashed home to pack & hit the road the next morning. Drove 740 miles & made it in time for the wedding rehearsal. The ceremony was today & it went well.
I hope I can post a small version of the cover I just finished for Baen Books. I am working on the back cover now (yeah, on the laptop).
The heat in Oklahoma has been rough, though technically it is cooler than usual; but when it's 88 percent humidity and zero wind, the difference between 98 degrees and 101 degrees on the thermometer isn't a lot. Still, some good has been done.
A group of Furry Fans, bless'em, came down from Kansas City & other parts. They helped me gather up a big load of household goods, furniture, building supplies & the like, to assist families in need as a result of the northeast Oklahoma flooding. This includes a cement mixer & a generator, and they did it all for free. The latter two items will be going to Habitat For Humanity.
My sad news is that my crow was killed. His name was Vel, and he was my lil' buddy. Raised him from fluff after rescuing him, and kept him as a nonreleasable rehab bird because he had two broken legs after he'd fallen from the nest in a storm. Last week a raccoon got into the enclosure in the back yard while he was out sunning, and got him. It makes me very sad. He would ride on my shoulder or forearm, and cuddle and generally be a great lil' pal. I miss him.

Dragon dude? Do you say that because of my superhero dragon on Pinnacle server? :)
(who just hit level 48 during the final Rikti Invasion "Save the World" plotline by the way---while teamed up with my RL dad, and with three (!) other people who dinged 50 on the mish---how great is that?)

But I'm glad that you're holding up.

Really the trouble is just that so much is so tiring. I have to sleep on a CPAP machine, with an oxygen concentrator droning away feeding in O2, take a fistful of pills, wake up to another fistful of pills & a shot of insulin in the belly, then run errands, fix stuff, work, check my blood sugar, adjust my food intake to balance that, check again, fix more stuff, yadda yadda---and still manage to be there for my wife, my friends, my pets, and dash off on rescue runs whenever I can, and take care of the fans & do the benefit stuff too. Because it ALL matters. But it wears me down. And morale is HUGELY important to me, nowadays, so if I get really down, it just makes things so sluggish to slog through.
I'd love to have some assistance---take on an apprentice or two just to have some able-bodied, enthusiastic folks around---but I'm kind of on my own in that way.

You're not exactly a slouch at house-rocking, yourself, sir.
Sorry to hear about your crow.
Oh! and last weekend, I amused someone with your definition of falconry. Heh. "Angry, pointy birds".

-smiles- Hey y'all. Back home again at last.
Drove 1,700 miles over 5 days, in the final tally. Even though Oklahoma is pretty much the surface of the sun right now, it is good to return. I have a cockatoo on my shoulder, preening my moustache, while another poses and peeps atop the laptop screen.
Thank you for the well-wishing about Vel. I do miss him.
The good news is that the Great Horned Owl that I recovered just before this trip is recovering steadily from her concussion. She's an elder huntress, and some of her troubles (malnutrition, dehydration, etc) may simply be due to advanced age.
By the way when I mentioned that we may be looking for live-in help, I was serious. Maybe I should start a thread about it.
Lester thanks again. My health is better now. The environmental circumstances are pretty brutal and sometimes, you know, a guy takes one on the chin. I only blame myself for not knowing how much is too much.
