During the long period of segregation that the south underwent, there were many laws regulating what white and black people, even the free ones, could and could not do, where they could go, who they could marry, etc. This left the people of New Orleans with a dilemma. Louisiana is still under Napoleonic Code because it allows our politicians to get away with stuff that the British Common Law System doesn't. Seriously. Look up Edwin Edwards, the crook we elected as governor in order to avoid electing the grand dragon of the KKK.

Differences are not as obvious as they used to be, but include some big ones in areas of family law - we're known here in Louisiana for steadfastly refusing to take children away from bad parents. Our divorce laws are a bit stricter - it took me longer to get divorced than my marriage lasted and it was an uncontested, no property divorce - and we don't have either alimony or a no fault divorce.

Louisiana also maintains a different tax system, which includes a homestead exemption - all property up to 75,000 does not have any taxes attached to it.

Oh, and we consider your car to be an extension of your home. Thus, search and seizure laws are a bit different with regard to cars. This doesn't apply to the interstate, however.

Angola Prison is also one of the few working farm/chain-gang prisons in the country as well and I'm sure that the state's laws have something to do with allowing for that.

Now, I have to go hide from the state police (or the democratic party of Louisiana, I'm not sure which) after I made that first remark about Louisiana politics.

Another interesting fact: despite the presence of black, white, asian, and other racial groups in extreme South Louisiana, that area of the state was never segregated. Folks down there recognized the need for everyone to work together for survival. And another: the Cajun language was almost as effectively stamped out as Native American languages in a similar fashion - Cajun kids were not allowed to speak their native language in school. It is fortunately enjoying a revival.

They're flat black boots and they really do look a lot like the ones Donna wears with the red costume. :)
