View Full Version : Anyone have experience with a broken Xbox 360?
My 360 is giving me the lovely ring of death (After downloading an update, which is kinda odd), so i went to the xbox site, put in the serial number, and found out it's under warranty.
Yay.
But they didn't send my any information on where to ship it, or what to do. A few people told me microsoft is going to send me a box that i have to ship it to them in, which makes sense since they said they would cover shipping.
Just wondering if anyone knows about this, Bioshock is coming out soon and i want to get my system back as soon as i can.

Yeah, just call MS and give them your info and they'll send you the box

thanks zero, i didn't need to call though, they had an online deal.
when i called to check, they had a message ready for me, based on my phone number, that they received the order.
I was just checking on the bit about getting a box.

An internal hardware failure. Basically, a dead console

it's like the common denominator for the majority of 360 owners.
Thank god mine is collecting dust since DOA4

there's the Stranglehold demo available, but believe me I become that lazy about my 360 that I dont even want to plug the cables behind the tv
Bioshock could really be a decent reason..but another FPS, meh

The infamous "3 red rings of death" for x-box owners , Microsoft spend over 1 billion to repair all the damage and they are still having problems. It's a major major screwup on the part of microsoft to rush out the X-box to beat off the PS3.

Yeah, i don't know how i feel about this whole thing.
It's so common that i gotta feel it shouldn't be happening.
On the other hand, i went through 3 broken ps2s, and they didn't offer to fix it, and ship it, for free.
But is getting it fixed free something i should be happy about? I'm missing Bioshock now, and thats the first thing i've beene xcited about 360wise in ages.

So have they not even attempted to fix it on new consoles? Instead of just repairing them when it's sent in?
You guys make me so sad that I just spent £279 on a 360.

well you can be one of those lucky guys, who knows. I'm expecting mine to crash at any moment, since I'm about to ZOMG turn it on again because of Bioshock

I plan on getting a 360 Elite by Christmas. Chances are the Elites will have chipsets, right?

So they say but at this point , who can really say that they have solved that hardware problem , besides the infamous 3 red lights of death , some x-box are also known for scratching the game discs with continuous play , rendering them unreadable. The worse thing about this scratching error is that it is not covered under the specific 3 year hardware warranty.

Eh. I'll deal with it. The Guitar Hero franchise will keep me company if I get a 360 that does that and I have to send it back. The turnaround for that doesn't sound too bad, plus it free, so...
Now, I didn't know about the disc scratching thing, but besides the Guitar Hero games, I think the most I ever play any game is...4-6 hours a week? Not sure if that counts as continuous play.

If you see the youtube video i linked to , that isn't always true. Why would anyone move their console when they are playing ?!!!

that happens when you never moved your console since the day you bought it, and the disc pops out scratched as well

I don't know, but it happens. I know several people who've done it. Hell, my brother messed up my copy of Oblivion like that.
Internal hardware failure is one thing but 9 times out of 10, if someone's disc gets scratched it's because they did something to scratch it. Even if it's not on, you're supposed to remove discs when you move the console. The disc isn't locked in place like a PS2 game

O.k. I watched the video. Putting tape on a disc to get it to vibrate like that DOES NOT prove that it does that normally. You could get the same result with any CD/DVD drive even if it's locked in. They made it unbalanced. I don't know about everyone else but I don't put tape or anything else on any discs. An imperfection of the disc from manufacturing could cause vibration... although not as bad as they showed most likely. Not to mention he moved it while it was running. BTW... If yours was making noise lake that wouldn't you turn it off??? I didn't see the kid move the console on the video, but that don't mean he never did. That being said... Microsoft should have the pads around the eye. They could easily have some of the clearances changed... If they make the drive themselves. So I'm not saying Microsoft isn't at any fault for anything, but some common sense on both sides could help a lot.

I only had it once. Once on both Xboxs. The original one could never be repaired. Don't know why, or how it happened. So we basically use this as an excuse to buy the 360.
I had it (again) with the 360. But repaired itself I think. One of the reasons would be the cooler. Or may be the reason. But the cooler does burnout your xbox as far as I heard. If you leave it on too long that is.
And by the way, about the disc scratches. How do you stand your Xbox? I always keep my consols on their side because having them standing (the discs would be in sideway positions) is not a good idea IMO.

The only special thing about it is the paint job... although it may be one of the ones that they added the HDMI port on.

No, its got the regular cabling (no HDMI). Hmm...well its tempting but I think I'll stick with getting an Elite.
I was all ready to play Madden yesterday when my X-Box hit me with the rings of death. This is the second time that's happened with my 360...

Anyone else try the towel trick? A friend of mine got hit with the Three Rings of Death and it worked surprisingly enough, if only temporarily.
I'm not saying anything about my experiences 'cause I'm not gonna jinx anything.

I don't know what that is.Update, btw, microsoft sent me the box to ship it to them. Unfortuntely, i have to ship it UPS and haven't located the UPS store in my city, the maps i get are all wrong for some reason.

No point as the red rings of death will show up again when the system gets heated up , it's a temp solution at best. Eventually , it'll lead to a total meltdown. Problem seemed to be either the coolent system or the chip in the X-box 360 , something that microsoft should fixed.

It genuinly works. But I don't know how long it'll last. <<

That's what happenend to my NCAA Football when the little one knocked it down while I was playing (my fault for having out on the floor), but I got concerned when it also happen to Splinter Cell. Hopefully I moved it (ironically, out of the way of the little one) when I was playing and forgot, but to be safe, I'm probably going to put in a game I've already completed to test this theory out.

Before mine brokedown entirely, it would break for 2 minutes at a time randomly.
Now that i think back, i got the ring of death 2 weeks after buying the thing, but it dissapeared for about 5 months.

I bought an Xbox360 almost a year ago, mid sept. It was DOA out of the box, red ring of death. Called microsoft & they told me to return it to where I bought it (Target). I did & got another. It had a newer build date. Since then, its worked pretty good. It was locked up several times.
A few times when playing Marvel Ultimae Alliance, the game would lock up. At times when there were a LOT of video information being processed. Another problem was when playing Dead rising, at times an error message would pop up while playing of "disk is either damaged or dirty, try cleaning it and blablabla". Ive had no trouble on Guitar Hero or Blazing Angels.
A question about the new warranties; Does anyone know if when you send your game in to be repaired, do you get your console back, or just a random fixed one?

I think the best option for those that are considering a purchase of a xbox360 (Like myself ) is to wait for the new 360 version with the falcon chip sets that will ship in the fall according to MS this should resolve the ROD issue, I will get mine in November just to certain that I get the Falcon version. All I can think of is COD 4

So... it turns out the power brick was faulty and anytime I played it for an hour or two the connections melted. It only worked once it cooled down.
X-Box support sent me a new one so it's all good. Right?
Well no.
Now it won't play games and it sounds like there is something loose in side the 360. Looks like I'm sending it back.
