"The Final Ark"
With a title like that, one can only hope for the return of "Oklahoma Bones and Whipley".
Scott Shaw!

Sorry, no Oklahoma Bones, but you'll be seeing a lot of other characters from the original series, plus some new ones.
Oh, and excellent though it is, Jeff's article neglected to mention that CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE FINAL ARK is also a direct tie-in to COUNTDOWN!
Questions, anyone?

Thanks for asking.
I know the regular series is being reprinted in a Showcase edition.
Is the Oz/Wonderland War going to be reprinted anytime?

Which issues of Countdown would we see this mini-series tied into ?
Scott Shaw!
08-06-2007, 08:15 PM
No, THE OZ-WONDERLAND WAR won't be included in the SHOWCASE PRESENTS: CAPTAIN CARROT AND HIS AMAZING ZOO CREW! collection.
And although Bill and I are about to start on the third issue of CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE FINAL ARK, we've yet to be told which number Earth that the planet formerly known as "Earth-C" is or exactly which issue(s) of COUNTDOWN that our little miniseries will cross over into...but I DO know that CCATFA is definitely "A COUNTDOWN Tie-In!"

Not even a side-reference? I always figured Okie would be considered a "reserve". Bunny from Beyond == coolest looking villain ever.
Kind of like how you left it off with Cold Turkey; I thought he might eventually make it onto the team proper.
Plus... Whirlibird!
With ties into Countdown, I expect to see the Time Keeper.
- - - -
The Showcase is a black-and-white reprint, correct? To me, that diminishes it's value; always liked the vibrant colors.
Scott Shaw!
08-07-2007, 10:26 PM
Sorry, no Oklahoma Bones, no Whipley, no Cold Turkey, no Time Keeper, no Bunny From Beyond...at least not in THESE densely plot-packed three issues, that is!
However, if everyone buys copies of CAPTAIN CARROT and it does really well for DC and becomes a series or at least a series of mini-series, I'd love to bring back any and all of the above for repeat performances.
Believe me, as far as I'm concerned, there's no shortage of story possibilites for the ZOO CREW!
And here's a question for YOU:
What's a "yiffer"?

Plastic Man had an ongoing series. It didn't sell enough copies and was cancelled. *shrug*
And having seen the pencils for issue 1 at SDCC, I can say that this is the best work Scott Shaw has ever done! It's going to be GREAT!

Ra's al Paca?
Mr. Sahw!, that is some true funny-book genius!
I like the idea of land animals vs. water animals. I sense some awkward moments between Fastback and Rubberduck with the rest of The Zoo Crew.
If Frogzilla is appearing, will the Dodo pop up, too?
EDIT: In an unrelated question to this particular series, does anyone know whatever happened to Rick Hoberg?

What's a "yiffer"?
A "yiffer" is "one who yiffs".
It's a very creepy thing that "furries" do.
Not me, though - my avatar is simply a sleazy joke at the expense of your characters. :D

Based on my experience as the Guest Of Honor at last year's AnthroCon, most "furries" aren't "creepy" at all. Regardless, why not create some funny-animal characters of your own and make sleazy jokes at their expense? If it's "creepy", I don't particulary appreciate it being applied to the Zoo Crew, whatever it is. (And I don't wanna know!)

Thanks... no, I know it won't be in the Showcase collection, but is there any hope it's going to be reprinted at all? Maybe (if I may be so bold as to suggest) in the same trade with the relevant pages from those Teen Titans issues, and the Final Ark miniseries?

Hey Scott Shaw!
Zoo Crew was one of my favorites as a kid and I am glad it's back.
I missed the Teen Titans cameos and it didn't make the trade. Any chance we'll see it in the Showcase edition. If not, then maybe when Final Ark gets collected as a tpb. (But don't worry, I plan to buy the regular issues for this one as well)
How did you feel about the direction Geoff took with The Zoo Crew?
I love most of his books (esp Flash, JSA, Titans, GL and soon BG) but I was a bit disturbed when I heard that Johns had grimmed up the ZC. I never got to read it so I can't really judge it but I was curious on your take on it.
Looking forward to this dude! Thanks again.

I never said *all* furries, but I believe one has to be furry for yiff status. I guess they're a sub-section. I'm no expert, nor do I wish to qualify; for more on the topic, Google.
That having been said, I've switched over to my "No Fat Chix" Booster Gold avatar.

Let's see now...
According to my buddy Jeff O., there's been a few mentions on the Internet that Earth-C is now referred to as "Earth-26" (supposedly because "Z" is the last letter of the alphabet), but I have had no confirmation on this from Joey Cavalieri, my editor at DC.
No word, either, on THE OZ-WONDERLAND WAR being reprinted, either. (Of course, I didn't know about the CCAHAZC! SHOWCASE PRESENTS collection until I read about it here on the CBR discussion boards!)
As for the TEEN TITAN pages, I'm hoping that, if CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE FINAL ARK is collected in a trade edition, they'll add all eight pages of Geoff John's Zoo Crew glimpses...and that they'll use ALL of my pages, instead of the four last-minute substitute pages that were printed in TT No. 31.
As for my opinion of Geoff John's approach to the Zoo Crew, suffice it to say that, although I probably wouldn't have written it the way he did, that nothing he came up with really bothered me. Comics have changed a lot since the original CCAHAZC! was being published, and although I don't particularly dig the "grim and gritty" approach to funnybooks (see my quotes in the article on CBR's front page), I DO like the idea of parodying this trend and Bill Morrison and I are doing just that -- but in a much more funny and lighthearted way. And if anyone is still upset about Alley-Kat-Abra turning evil, or Little Cheese's murder, well, I don't want to reveal anything specific until the new series is in print, but we're addressing those particular issues in a way that I guarantee every CAPTAIN CARROT fan will approve of and enjoy.
And "Squashua", I appreciate you changing avatars, but "No Fat Chix" doesn't make this fat-guy-in-a-Hawaiian-shirt-with-a-bbw-wife particularly happy either. Frankly, it's obnoxious, but least you didn't apply it to MY characters. In general, why not try being clever rather than offensive?
Aloha,
Scott!

I just wanted to say that I have been a fan of Captain Carrot since I first saw issue #2 on the stands back in...whenever it came out. I have all the issues in the original run (it took me a while to find that #1!), the most recent Teen Titans serial, but I missed Oz-Wonderland. Like many, I was a bit confused/disappointed in the recent treatment, but I have complete faith that you'll do some creative writing and pull off some wonders! I'll definitely pick up the Ark (I haven't been so excited about a comic in years!), and even though I have all the original issues, will probably pick up the TP collection just to tell DC "hey, I'm a buyer, make more Captain Carrot!" Hope to see some good romantic tension between CC and Alley-Kat-Abra in the new series. That was always a highlight.
Salamandroid and King Kone were my favourite villains (I never buy toys, but if there was a King Kone action figure - or a Rat Tornado - I would put my money down! Not holding my breath though...) - glad to see at least one of them is back!
Keep up the fantastic work and I give you my full moral and financial support!

It's kind of neat to think that The Zoo Crew are popular comic book characters on Earth 52 in the same way that Jay Garrick was originally a character in Barren Allen's Earth 1 comics. Just think of all the royalties you could collect on New Earth!

We get a few glimpses of 'em in the first issue, in various contexts, as well as Earth-C/Earth 26's versions of Krypto and Ace The Bat-Hound -- as drawn by R. Rodney Rabbit!
(Hey, if Earth-C is now Earth-26, does that mean that Earth C-Minus is now Earth-25?)
And if you happen to dig the JLA, don't miss the "Captain Carrot" issue of ALTER EGO No. 72, reprinting my two try-out pages of a JUSTA LOTTA ANIMALS series, which led directly to doing CAPTAIN CARROT AND HIS AMAZING ZOO CREW! It's also got an all-gnu cover by Yours Truly, with the Zoo Crew battling Starro The Conqueror, and a looong conversation/interview between CCAHAZC! co-creator/editor Rascally Roy Thomas and myself about all aspects of the original series!

If Earth C is Earth-26, is there still an Earth C- and if so, what Earth is it? 27? 25?
Jeff O.
08-11-2007, 05:28 PM
(Hey, if Earth-C is now Earth-26, does that mean that Earth C-Minus is now Earth-25?)
I like your thinking!
If it hasn't been charted yet, I hope you guys can reserve the designation of "Earth-25" for Super-Squirrel and Company before the number is given to a one-shot or two-shot Elseworld (no matter how good the Elseworld might have been). After the announcement about COUNTDOWN: ARENA, it seems the 52 Earths are starting to fill up, so to speak. Otherwise, it might soon take all of The Batmouse's money to buy himself and his allies a new homeworld.
And it'd be a shame if the JLAnimals and the Zoo Crew don't wind up neighbors. It might make it harder for Rodney to pick up transmissions of a Lotta their adventures, leaving him with writer's and artist's blocks!
The only logical competition you might have for "Earth-25" would be the world where all the RUDOLPH comics took place (that is, where "December 25" almost always seems to be approaching). Until DC licenses the rights to Rudy again, though, I don't think they'd reserve a number for a world they can't show.
Scott Shaw!
08-11-2007, 07:09 PM
Well, since the Just'a Lotta Animals DO have a role in CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE FINAL ARK and they still hail from an alternative Earth than that of the Zoo Crew, they'd BETTER have their own reality...and if Captain Carrot and company really do live on "Earth-26", I'm serious in suggesting that the JLA is from "Earth-25".
SO serious, in fact, that I'm gonna forward this thread to our DC editor, Joey Camelieri, er, Cavelieri, and see how HE wants to deal with this issue!

There should be a diverse range of books on the market for different tastes and different age groups. Captain Carrot has a broad appeal that could potentially draw in young readers while simultanoeously appealing to those of us who fondly remember the original series.
For me, Captain Carrot is first and foremost a FUN comic. Given the darkness of the DCU in recent times, I thin it's great to see a fun book being published.

Seriously, please withhold your opinion until AFTER you've read all three issues of CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE FINAL ARK. Well crap. I was looking forward to getting this. I have several of the comics that I've managed to reacquire over the years, but I'm still missing the majority of them (and even when I collected the series, I had a couple of gaps in there).
I wish they'd collect the Teen Titans stuff in there, as DC cut the Captain Carrot storyline out of the TPB. :(
(Maybe in v.2 of a Showcase Presents, they'll have the Oz-Wonderland War- I'm missing issue 1- the Teen Titans stories, and the new mini coming out?)
[EDIT- On a related note, I had once toyed with the concept of a "Vertigo-esque" revival of CC/ZC, with a more realistic take on the Zoo Crew as the result of animal experimentation in the cosmetics industry, but could never quite figure out the fine line between social satire and the classic good natured funny books of the original Crew.]

Paul, my thought EXACTLY! (But I've never seen a monitor lizard wearing an expression like a basset hound before!)
Sorry, gang, no Monitor, reptilian or otherwise. You'll just have to read all three issues -- right down to the final page, even -- of CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE FINAL ARK to find out how it ties into COUNTDOWN...but tie in it definitely does!
Aloha,
Scott!

Oddly, chrome skulls strike ME as "being a bit dated"!
(And when was the last time you even HAD a date, anyway?)
Seriously, please withhold your opinion until AFTER you've read all three issues of CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE FINAL ARK. The main story IS a "fun" one, having fun with some of the current conventions of comics ("The Collar ID Initiative"), as well as the Sandy Eggo Comic-Con Interspeciesal convention! Although kids can read it, please don't mistake this for a kiddie comic.
I think you'll be quite pleasantly surprised!
Aloha,
Scott!
I don't have to date as I have a partner thank you.. Nor do I think I will bother reading this

I'm upset the Showcase isn't coming out. It would have been a great gift for my nephew.
But I'm excited about the mini!

You mean, of course, Oklahoma Bones. (Which, now that I think about it, is a possibility.)

Aw, c'mon, Adamantium Avatar, don't pout. Despite the absence of emoticons, I was kidding, intentionally overreacting to your evocation of "outdated". I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings. (I keep forgetting that on the Internet, fans often judge a new project MONTHS before they actually see or read it.) Didn't you read my "seriously"? After all, I did take the time and effort to provide a straight response to your post. Please take a look at my interview at THE PULSE and I think you might change your mind.
And I'm sorry, gang, but the SHOWCASE PRESENTS: CAPTAIN CARROT is postponed for the time being. It's a real shame, because the original publication date would have been timed absolutely PERFECTLY for those wishing to immerse themselves in the world of the Zoo Crew.
As for Oklahoma Bones, neither he nor Whipley are appearing in CAPTAIN CARROT AND THE FINAL ARK. But rest assured, there's a whole SLEW of familiar guest-stars in the third and final issue!
(And just wait until you meet the New Dogs!)
Aloha,
Scott!

At the ten minute mark Didio commenced a lightning round, with quick questions and short answers....
Any characters from Earth-26? Didio said to expect Earth-26 Blue Beetle in Arena.

My comic shop guy told me he got an email from Diamond this week in regards to the Showcase edition of Captain Carrot. He said the codes included in the email said that the reason the book won't be coming in is that it was cancelled by the publisher.
Any idea what's going on?

Deathstroke, here's a link looking into why orders for the recent SHOWCASE books were cancelled.

And this one tells when to expect them resolicited. And here I was hoping to give at least one copy of SHOWCASE PRESENTS: CAPTAIN CARROT as a Christmas present this year.

[Bob] Wayne said to expect more DC series collected in different formats beginning in 2008. Also, expect a new release date for all the "Showcase" books being pulled off the schedule. Wayne apologized for the discomfort and said that they'll reappear sometime in the second half of 2008.
