im only put this in countdown because he is a new god.


ok i bought jack kirbys fourth world omnibus, a few days ago, and im around half way through it, and twice it has mentioned mantis being as powerful, or even more powerful thank darksied himself. and well if mantis is realyl this powerful, wouldnt he show up alot in the dc universe?


has he ever be a main villian in big arc? or is he just a small time villian. because ive never seen him in one comic since 2000.


also the last thing, does anyone think dc should make mantis a way better villian? like maybe make him the villian in a 12 part series. or make it so he was the guy who killed lightray. because to me, if he is as powerful as darksied they should use him as a character more often.

Mantis returns and is the major villain in issues 9-10 of New Gods, the story that introduces Forager. This is just before the series was cancelled (issue 11 was the final issue). It should be in Omnibus 3 or 4.

I think the main reason Mantis hasn't been used more as a major villain is that despite his power he was still subservient to Darkseid. Also, given Darkseid's status in the DCU, Mantis was relegated to jobber in most post-Kirby stories. It's actually a pretty common occurence for most of Darkseid's Elite post-Kirby. Compare Kalibak in New Gods with Kalibak in most non-Kirby stories.

Didn't he show up in one of the last issues of Firestorm? Or was that a different Darkseid lackey? Either way, he still got jobbed to Spider-Man once.

Well, a big reason why he wasn't seen much was because, outside the Bugs, he wasn't really relevant to other New Gods stories. They used him more in SUPER POWERS stories than in actual DCU comics.

Jim Starlin KILLED him in his storyarc at the start of the late 1980's/early 1990's New Gods series (which spun out of Starlin's COSMIC ODYSSEY).

Mantis wasn't seen again until Walt Simonson brought him back for an issue of ORION.

And now I'm sure Starlin will be killing him again in DEATH OF THE NEW GODS...
