Anybody else pick this one up yet? The third and newest Minx graphic novel. Personally as a fan of Andi Watson, this was the one I was looking forward to the most.
I won't spoil anyone, but the plot revolves around a British "goth" teenager named Lottie who after getting in trouble with the law is sent by her parents to spend the summer with her grandparents out in the county (like a reverse Fresh Prince of Bel Air). And what a fish-out-of-water tale this becomes, all the hallmarks are there. Nothing more refreshing than a city slicker disaffected youth making comments about how quaint the country is. Anyway she falls for the local country boy stud who's more intelligent than she first takes him for and they set out to solve a murder after they discover a dead body on the golf course.
I basically thought the book was terrible.
I just hate Howard's art style. I don't think he's very good at storytelling at all, his strengths lie in making petite goth teenage characters sexy and giving said characters as many sexy outfits as possible and put them in as many sexy poses as he can. I don't like his Dead@17 either.
I usually really like Andi Watson and I was disappointed he was not illustrating this as well, but I got over that. But even his writing wasn't very strong in Clubbing. The characters, story, everything was just a cliche, absolutely nothing that hadn't been done loads before and done better. And I don't give a shit if it is directed at an internet generation, "OMG" is not acceptable as a substitute for "oh my god". Especially not 3 times.
I've come to the conclusion I'm just not going to read anymore Minx graphic novels. They're not for me, and in my opinion they dumb down the material. Andi Watson and Mike Carey are capable of so much more yet they seem to be writing down to their audience. I can accept stories and characters written to that particular demographic, I'm not going to settle for lackluster execution. To be fair Re-Gifters was the best of the three, but the story was very unoriginal and that creative team are capable of so much more.
