Hey all. I used to be kinda into comics when I was young and I am looking to get back into it, so I am looking for some suggestions on what to pick up. I really like epics, so I am really looking for a series or mini-series. I have no idea what's out there at the moment so for now I am open to any and all suggestions. Post name and a little description (without giving away too much of course). Greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

Can you be a bit more specific about what you like?

If you like epics (particularly superhero ones), Darwyn Cooke's DC: The New Frontier may be right up your alley. Essentially, it recasts DC's superheroes in the Cold War setting of the 1950s, while the story itself represents the rise of the Silver Age of Comics history from the Golden Age; which took place during this very time period. It's told primarily through the point-of-view of characters like Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) & Martian Manhunter, both characters who debuted during DC's Silver Age. For some background details, Superman & Wonder Woman now work for the government by the time the story picks up, and Batman seems to have (although there's a twist near the end) told them where to stick it & gone underground. It's available in two formats: two softcover volumes, and one GINORMOUS Absolute Edition in hardback with a slipcase & a ton of other extra goodies (I'd strongly suggest the latter if you actually have the bucks to blow).
And it's also being adapted into an animated Direct-to-DVD feature film as we speak. Kyle McLachlan is Superman, Lucy Lawless is Wonder Woman, David Boreanez is Green Lantern, Neil Patrick Harris is The Flash, Jeremy Sisto is Batman, and Phil Morris is King Faraday in it (still no word on Martian Manhunter, though). The DVD hits early next year.

Large recent epics.
I'd say Annihilation would be a good place to start. If you like Marvel cosmic tales, you'd like this. The initial story and all its mini's are available in 3 Hardcover collections.
Summary
Annihilus (sp?) has gotten out of the Negative zone with an entire armada that destroys everything in their path. Marvel's cosmic characters try to stop him. That's the basic premise
I can't think of any non Marvel / DC that fits the description of "epic"

well like i said, im not sure whats out there. in the way of movies, i love star wars, lord of the rings, the matrix, things of that nature.
im not really looking to spend major dollars on some ultra special edition of something, or something ultra rare. just something new and simple.
thanks all for the help so far.

Skip Civil War, which requires you to read spinoffs to make any real sense of the story, and get Planet Hulk, which has a basic story of "Hulk smash!" and leads into this summer's Marvel event, World War Hulk.

I'd say get Annihilation Book 3 (Hardcover which collects issues #1-6, along with a few other issues).....It's an epic storyline of the cosmic nature. I'd also suggest you get the single issue Annihilation Nova #4, just so you can see what happens with one of the major characters in this storyline.
Although founder81 suggested all three Annihilation hardcovers, I personally wouldn't suggest the first two, as Book 3 is really all you need (Contains the best & essential parts of the storyline).......Books 1 & 2 are pretty much build-ups to the main story, and I found most of them to be lackluster.
You can get Annihilation Book 3 for lower than cover price at places like amazon.com, and it results in being cheaper than having bought the original separate issues, with a hardcover version of the book on top of that.
