Buried Alien

Started by request. :)
Somewhere out there, there's a great mashup of the Romantics' "Talking In Your Sleep" and Depeche Mode's "Dream On."

Is this a race? First one to find this wins a new car and a trip to Fiji?

Can anyone recommend good mashups? Getting Revolved and Cracked Pepper as we speak.

Night Ripper by Girl Talk is probably my favorite mash up album.
It's very much a club/dance mash up and I don't always care for the raps he uses, but the range of music is pretty good.
In one song he samples the Boredoms. The freakin BOREDOMS!
You can find a quick example at YouTube (http://youtube.com/watch?v=rBwYqtTkflw), though I would add it's not one of his better songs.
If you're keen to YouSendit, Smash Your Head (http://download.yousendit.com/4D0CA8E551478C99) is my favorite of his songs, but that's probably because he samples one of my favorite Nirvana song(Scentless Apprentice) AND a chipmunked Elton John's Tiny Dancer.

I've been meaning to check out more mashups. Listening to them is weirdly like being adrift in pop culture.
I enjoyed American Edit, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Edit) and it forced me to admit that Green Day is a decent enough band.

Okay, I can't be the only one looking at this thread with a big "?" over my head, so someone's going to have to come with a definition of what a "Mash-up" is...
Is it taking two songs and....mashing them together?

Is it taking two songs and....mashing them together?Pretty much. Apparently, jamming a wussy plastic pop tune together with something more rock 'n' roll equals some sort of "punk rock" statement for people who can only like music in ironic ways.

Yeah, but those are the boring mash ups. I have no interest in listening to some diva singing over the Smell Like Teen Spirit riff.
Fun mash ups are like Sanagi said, a sea of pop culture. Or at the very least they should attempt to present an entirely new song from existing sources.
With Girl Talk, it can be fun just trying to identify all the different songs being used.

I'm listening to Cracked Pepper now and enjoying it. Does anyone know what songs were used? I mean, some are obvious but I don't recognize them all.

Listen to any 2 many DJ's album. They're about the only guys who can do it properly. Most other stuff just sounds rubbish.

I got Cracked Pepper here. (http://memethief.com/2007/07/26/mashup-cracked-pepper/) The official site for it was causing me trouble in itunes because it was formatted as a podcast and itunes doesn't see why you should be able to have podcasts in your music library(stupid itunes - and it used to be so good). I haven't found a working link for Revolved yet.

There is a comprehensive article on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mashup_%28music%29) concerning mash-ups which gives details on various mash-ups out there (hopefully The Beachles: Sgt. Petsound's Lonely Hearts Club Band should have finished downloading before I get home tonight!).
There was also an official album called Mashed (http://www.play.com/Music/CD/4-/3299918/Mashed/Product.html) released here in the UK last year. It has a couple of good tracks (Passenger Fever = Peggy Lee's Fever mixed with Iggy Pop's Passenger & Rapture Riders = Blondie's Rapture + The Doors' Rider On The Storm) but overall, it was fairly average.

Oh, and sorry for the double post, but I found this good Beatles mashup, the description says it's over 40+ songs compressed into 5 minutes of goodness.

I love Partyben. You can find his indivdual songs here (http://partyben.com/downloads/), his longer mixes here (http://www.partyben.com/downloads/mixes.html) and the old SixxMixx he used to do for a San Francisco radio station here (http://www.dreroc.com/RAM/beats.html). he was also the DJ behind American Edit(the Green Day mash up album) and is probably most famous for his mix of Oasis' Wonderwall, Green Day's Boulevard of Broken Dreams, and Travis' Writing To Reach You, among others.

Yeah, Girl Talk is a lot of fun. I've seen him live 3 times now, and each show has been amazing. It's been a bit of a trip watching him go from nobody, to Pitchfork darling, to playing to Paris Hilton at Coachella.
I'm not too big on most mash-ups though, a lot of them are pretty awful. The only mash-ups I've really enjoyed this year are A-Trak's, on his Dirty South Dance mixtape. Other than that, Party Ben's are always classic, and I second the 2ManyDJs recommendation.
