Answer 1 (True answer): Doesn't matter, it's the stories that matter.
Answer 2 (practical answer): Whichever he wants, so he can tell the stories he wants.
Answer 3 (nerd answer): That said, I'd love to see:
Scott, Emma, Bobby, Logan, Fantomex, and Quentin.

What I would prefer is that Ellis deal with a team of malcontents that are upset with whatever the results of the Messiah Complex, rather than the core X-Men. It would be better suited for him to take some C and D list characters and do something interesting and unique with them, rather than having the core X-Men.
From what Axel and other editors have said, the X-Men are going to be structured like an army and Scott steps up as a leader. If Astonishing remains as the center book with the top X-Men, that makes it the command staff. That doesn't seem the right type of cast for Ellis to be dealing with. Ellis seems like the type of writer who would be best suited to write the disgruntled group who dislikes what's going on and rebels against the new status quo.

From my limited exposure to Diabolik, the movie Danger Diabolik, i'd say he wasnt awesome
plus even if he was, Fantomex is terrible because his mutant power is to have a thing, which is lame

I voted for Cyke, Emma, and Nightcrawler. The one thing that I am a little concerned about is whether or not Ellis pitched ideas for the series or if Marvel just asked him to do it. I always liked the fact that Morrison pitched this grand storyline before things got started. With MC still to play out, I wonder how much has really been settled with the rosters.
As much as i love emma, i don't like waiting for each issue 4 months or so, so i wouldn't keep her. I'm also tired of her relationship with cyclops, and her rivalry with kitty-brat. That way others writers can use Emma.
I would keep Beast, Cyclops and Logan.

With Carey she'd be on a higher profile book, but with Cornell she's more likely to have a more central leading role imo. I'd really be happy either way though, just get her outta Exiles.

If he doesn't take Emma, love to see him handle Psylocke.
Wolfsbane possibly, slightly more grrrr Cyclops would be good too (anal retentive + Ellis = gold) sans relationship plots if possible.
He could also be the one to rescue Gambit & Wolverine from cliché hell - one or the other though, not both.
Val Cooper must guest.
Alternatively bring back punk Storm, add Chamber & Northstar plus a random bunch of misfits.

True, but they were (inadvertently) created by a mutant... actually, I wonder if Wanda's warps might've produced similar results? Maybe we'll see all new Warpies springing up?

I'd trade out Brian for Betsy in Cornell's book actually... it'd be a nice reversal for each, allow Brian to start over at the Institute and allow Betsy to take a more prominent role in Excalibur... hell, she could even try her hand at taking up the mantle again. :D

LOL! =) (I wanted a similar line-up Storm, Sage, & Psylocke) I really want to see the destiny diaries story continued and completed properly, but in Uncanny......
I'm kinda sick of the current Astonishing Line-up, I LOVE THE BOOK, but I love it when we get characters interacting that we don't know like the back of our hands....
Scott and Emma work well as Co-Heads of the Institute, but I would like to see them split up for a WHILE...... (if emma is even coming back from space  )
I really don't care who they put in astonishing as long as it shakes up the status quo. Possible choices:
MONET! (she deserves to be in a core X-Men book, if she has the kid, with her background, M is going to have a nanny (or nannies)
I don't see her becoming a stay at home mommy any time soon.
NORTHSTAR!- He just rocks! (Put him in Astonishing or Adjectiveless and I'm happy)
PSYLOCKE! - Get her away from Claremont and let someone take her in a new direction....

I'm operating under the assumption that this team's mission is still to serve as a public relations envoy to the non-mutant world. We need people who would draw attention/interest, and those people tend to be rich, famous, and beautiful. Shallow, but true ...
Dazzler: with those powers and famous history, who better to "Astonish" the world at large?
Angel: wealthy and handsome playboy
Emma Frost: the ice queen to rise above all other ice queens.
Northstar: handsome and wealthy former Olympian famous the world over for being oen of the first superheroes to come out of the closet publicly.
Beast: his tenure with the Avengers would garner enough sympathy from the public to warrant attention.
Storm: she's a QUEEN, (soon-to-be former) member of the Fantastic Four.
Professor X: a renowned pioneer of mutant rights.

I voted for Cyclops, Emma Frost, Colossus, Wolverine, and Storm. However, this is the team I really want to see!
Cyclops (Leader of the X-Men) He is the leader of the "Astonishing" team and the X-Men in general, thus stepping down as Headmaster of the school.
Emma Frost (Queen "B" of the Institute) She is now THE Headmistress of the school and only goes on field missions when it's needed.
Wolverine (Resident Bad-A$$) He would never admit it, but he sticks with the Mansion team because of his affinity for the younger team, and his new sidekick, Armor, especially.
Armor (Junior X-Woman of Tomorrow) She has developed a relationship with Wolverine that is very reminisant of the one he had with Jubilee and is still learning the extant of her powers.
Beast (THE Mainstay) He has become very relaxed and comical since the return of his love Cecile Reyes, but is still the most grounded of the X-Men.
Cecile Reyes (X-Woman from "Limbo") She is drawn back to the Mansion and team when she is found by Beast on his search for a cure to the endangerment of mutants with a new found fire within.
Northstar (The Fast and The Flaming*) He has returned to the Mansion with his sister to return to teaching, but is tangled up in the team before he can start.
Aurora (Untapped Powerhouse) Her reamergance and mental recovery have also revealed a new power level that she was unaware of, which she hopes to learn to control at the Mansion and with the "Astonishing" team.
*I'm gay, so I can say that!

Aurora (Untapped Powerhouse) Her reamergance and mental recovery have also revealed a new power level that she was unaware of, which she hopes to learn to control at the Mansion and with the "Astonishing" team.

wouldn't you be doubling up on the force-field powers, including Armor and Cecilia?

Beast (THE Mainstay) He has become very relaxed and comical since the return of his love Cecile Reyes, but is still the most grounded of the X-Men.

how would it be interesting? think of it from a writers standpoint. you have to write action scenes. how will you use one force-field generator differently from another? why wouldn't a diverse power set be more interesting? ex. the Fantastic 4 vs the All-stretchy Four

I don't know if I'm just speaking from a bias of liking both characters, but I think the basic ways they use their powers are rather different.
I see Armor more like Colossus, but has a "telekinetic" or whatever armor instead of steel. She's more of a brawler with an interesting visual more than anything.
Cecilia was traditionally defensive, though she ended up using it as spikes that stabbed people. LOL that sounds funny. Anyway, yeah.

i like Banshee and Siryn. but i wouldn't put on the same team together. it would just look funny. and it's something that i would imagine a good battle strategist avoiding. and i've never read a good x-men run that involved this kind of doubling up. look at all of the great teams; X-Factor, for example. imagine if Rictor was repowered somehow but was, instead, given a sonic scream. wouldn't that be jarring to you, even if a different visual effect was used for the 'scream?' honestly, i have no problem with Cecilia and Hisako being in the same book. i just think it'd be wasteful to make them both active on the roster. like i could easily imagine Cecelia somehow instructing Armor in the use of her powers; instructor-pupil relationship.

No, I actually agree with the gist of what you're saying, I just don't think Armor and Cecilia specifically really go against your argument. I love seeing teams have a wide array of powers, but I see Armor a lot more like Colossus than say...the Invisible Woman.

Doubling up on powers isn't a bad idea. I prefer the way Morrison did it however. Multiple telepaths is brilliant. I miss the Xavier/Emma/Jean dynamic that the books had. I loved Emma and Jeans relationship. They were my favorite part of any X-Men series I've ever read.

powers come first; personalities second. why? because the powers (especially mutant powers) often influence or shape the personality. show me a good team and i'll show you one with variety. look at the original 5. look at Claremont's second flight. i wouldn't suggest putting two characters who have the same personality or look on the team, either. sometimes writers will even alter a characters personality if they happen to be on the same team with someone similar (personality-wise). you can have 2 characters on a team who have similar powers to highlight how different their personalities are. but that rarely works; long-term.

s.
The original 5 and CCs team needed to be distinct because they were teams constructed for broad appeal
X-men has grown beyond that. The characters are more important than the powers.

Mid-long term thematically speaking, they totally were. But on panel during Morisson's run...?
If I recall correctly, they've interacted for, what, a couple of pages tops before the big showdown in NXM #139?? Kinda cracks me up when some (not you, obviously) go on regarding how roxor-fire-and-ice!!! was the vibe between the two.
If anything, they mostly *ignored* each other. And it wasn't about dynamic tension or conflict. They didn't hate one another. They just had nothing to do with one another.

Why aren't more people voting her way? She'd be an off-beat/gret dynamic... and Ellis writes her with precision.

because, technically, they weren't even on a team together. they were school staff at that point. and, like i mentioned, one of the characters was changed dramatically (given a diamond form and made a physical combatant).

Come to think of it, if I recall correctly, the only person with whom either had least interaction was, hum, Xorn. Jean's had more interaction with Fantomex than Emma prior to #139, for crying out loud. So much for ongoing dynamic. :D

Ok... I have no idea who any of that was aimed at...
Anyway, I do feel like they had plenty of time together in Morrison's run. And even if they weren't together or talked every issue doesn't mean they didn't have a good dynamic going. Also, the dynamic doesn't only have to do with specifically being around one another, it's the actions they take that involve the other... As far as I'm concerned, Jean and Emma are Fire and Ice. They don't hate eachother, I don't think. They just don't like eachother, while still having a great deal of respect for one another... something these boards are apparently lacking here...
And yes, I understand what is meant by having an assortment of powers on a team. But at the same time, while Emma was given a new ability and it was used quite a lot, her main ability has always been her telepathy. And Jean was around for a while before she died.
And when one tries and succeeds in having an affair with the other's husband... I think they did have something to do with eachother...

I agree Emma and Jean were ALWAYS civil towards one another even when Emma was being a bitch or Jean was doing her walk through memory lane.
And Darth brought up something good. Fantomex...him and Jean sorta flirted add Wolverine Jean was the real skank during Morrisons run at least Emma stuck with one guy. Jean ignored her husband and just b/c she didn't act on her flirtations people act like she's a saint.
news flash. Flawless characters are BORING they lack something called CHARACTER.

Which can be summed up to a handful of scenes. The mob, the Cyke/mindrape showdown and one or two meaningless bits of snark in staff meetings. Not much.
Points penalty since Jean only found out about Scott/Emma because the Cuckoos ratted them out.
As far as I'm concerned, Jean and Emma are Fire and Ice.
No big fan of the analogy, but I sort of agree. It's the whole 'two sides of the same coing' thing I have a problem with. Can't remember whether you were for it or not. Oh well.
And when one tries and succeeds in having an affair with the other's husband... I think they did have something to do with eachother...
Wait, this was about the two characters' alleged dynamic. Not the Jean/Scott/Emma triangle. And if you're saying the only the only thing binding them is a third party, well, you're kinda making my point.

Morrison alone? Wouldn't call Jean a whore because she isn't. Still, her jerking a few guys (read Cyke, Wolvie and Warren) around because she's being indecisive pretty much is a defining part of her persona. Not just in 616 at that.

I really don't care who is on the team. I would like a little shake up cause since Morrison New X-Men it seems the A-Team is Scott, Emma, Wolvie and Beast. I kinda want to see that busted up a bit. Maybe a team of:

Storm would be a classic addition. I don't see how Emma on a team can be considered classic at all. Time-displaced Jean-ish Rachel and power/body swapping Psylocke would be a very poor fit for a supposedly accessible team.

I'm not sure if you actually read it, but it said "even with Emma involved"
She adds a little more personality to the team which is why I would keep her. some of the "lol" moments in the book come from Emma and her banter with other members. I think Storm is too much of a leader, and too exposed right now, to be on this title. She shouldn't become another Wolverine. Throwing Storm, Emma and Scott on one team is asking for too much animosity. Storm should be leading her own team again.
