View Full Version : backwards compatability in PC games

I enjoy playing PC games, but I only got into them a few years ago, because I didn't have a good computer at home. Recently, I've been picking up games on deep discount that I've heard great things about. And I'm finding that Windows XP doesn't play nice with older games, especially with the Service Packs installed. (Goddamn you, Bill Gates!) My great deals at GameStop and Goodwill (!) have turned into frustrating challenges.

Riven: This sequel to Myst is supposedly a great puzzle-solving type game, but the first puzzle was getting it to install on my computer. I had to go in and manually set the compatability on my computer for the .exe file to run as Windows 98. I had to download an old, old version of DivX, something like 2.0 or 3.0, just so the graphics would display properly. And then I had to set the compatibility of the installed game to Windows 98. This took about 4 hours of trial and error and research on the internet.

Fallout 1: I really wanted to play this legendary rpg, especially since it had a theme that really interested me, plus the turn-based combat that I prefer. I ran into similar installation problems as with Riven, and ultimately managed to get it done simply by old-school hacking... trying over and over with minor variations until I got it up and running. But now I'm up against a dreaded black screen problem. Every 5-20 seconds, the whole screen goes black, though I can "wipe" away the blackness by sweeping my mouse back and forth like I'm wiping the screen with my hand. Moving my character also clears away the screen as he moves, simulating limited vision even when the character is in the desert at high noon. The game is so good otherwise that I'm playing through the pain. I can totally see the influence on later rpgs that I've enjoyed, like Temple of Elemental Evil and Vampire: Bloodlines.

Fallout 2: I haven't even messed with this one yet, but I hear that I may be facing a blue screen problem, and possibly crashes to desktop.

Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth: Actually, even though I bought this game used, this is not really a case of backwards compatability. Installation was easy, but now I need a new 3d video card.

Anybody else here struggling with compatability issues? Have Microsoft's Service Packs prevented you from playing some old favorites?

For the DOS games you should try DOSBox. It's a great, free program.

I downloaded that just yesterday, on the advice of other people who have wrestled with Fallout's XP issues. I haven't had a chance to read through the details about how to use DOSBox, and I'm not thrilled at the prospect of re-installing Fallout. Besides, I have the PC version of Fallout, not the DOS version, so I'm not sure if DOSBox will help me.

The first games I ever ran into this problem with were some really old D&D games that originally came out on the Commodore 64. Pool of Radiance, Ruins of Myth Drannor, and several others I can't recall the name of right now. Back in 1998 or so I bought a package that had all these games on it that was "compatible" with Windows 98. Only problem was that they didn't adjust the games for these new superfast (relative to C64) computers. A combat that used to take fifteen minutes on the C64 took mere seconds here and you couldn't tell at all what had happened. The only workaround was to install something on your computer to slow it down which became problematic for me because it became hard to turn off the slow down when you went back to other things.

Well, so far the only game that I couldn't play was Creatures. Too bad. I like the game.

For XP , older games , people generally seemed to use Dosbox . I'm still backdated as my system is still Win98. :p

If you like turn based combat and older games , you should try the awesome classic X-com/UFO trilogy - enemy unknown , terrors from the deep & apocalypse and the Jagged alliance games. Great memories with those games much like the fallout series.

How do you get DOS? Do you go to a store or do you download it? I'm just wondering so maybe if it ever crosses my mind I might get it.

Pretty much every computer has dos in it, its just with XP it can be hard to use. Dosbox is a program that needs to be downloaded but it allows you to run dos games and stuff on XP.

I'm actually in a similar situation as shellhead with fallout. Fallout 2 did work for me but I found it bloody hard to control (not to mention I dislike the idea of playing fallout 2 first) so I've given up on it for the time being (probably get back to it when I get some free time). I do miss playing some of the older games, used to love playing space hulk 2 but it crashes like every 5 minutes and x com just screws up the screen.

Funny thing is I know a guy who works in computers who absolutely hates microsoft because according to him, their policy of trying to make everything as backwards compatible as possible has really held back technology.

Fallout is a FPS game right? Because if it is, I hate playing FPS in computers. Except when I play SWAT 3 for some reason.

Nope, fallout 1 and 2 are top down RPGs.

I have installed DosBox and even successfully mounted it with my designated game folder. But now I can't seem to install Fallout within it. Grrr. So I'm still playing Fallout with the blackout problem for now.

Several weeks ago, I showed some friends the blackout screen problem that I was having with Fallout. One of them mentioned DosBox but didn't have any direct experience with it. Otherwise, they had no advice for me. Today, I started up my ongoing game of Fallout, for the first time since then, and I didn't have a blackout screen problem anymore! I did get killed, so I will be going back to my most recent saved game, but at least I didn't have this technical issue. I don't know what went right... maybe I mounted it okay in DosBox but didn't start it up right last time? Other than that, the only changes on my computer lately have been that I downloaded some better quality antiviral software and it nailed several trojans on my system.

EDIT: Mystery solved. My girlfriend recently downloaded the latest version of the DivX codec, and that seemed to solve my problem automatically.
