Simple question, is it worth picking up?

Simple answer: No.
Slightly longer answer: Its the first Elseworld story and is okay for the first read but doesn't really hold up well. Try the trade with the sequel Master of Worlds or something to that effect.
Like every comic book, people are going to have differing opinions. I liked Gotham by Gaslight. Only way you're going to find out if you do is to read it yourself.

If you like Mignola's art, then yeah, pick it up. Decent story, great atmospheric art by Mignola.
I actually enjoyed the sequel, "Master of the Future" better. More of a Jules Verne steampunk-type story than GbG. They should publish both as a tpb.

I enjoyed it, but not enough to remember why. I read it about six years ago and remember thinking "That was pretty cool!" afterward. Doesn't Batman fight Jack the Ripper?
When it came out I loved it and hoped that it was the start of something new. It was definately good enough to start the Elseworld line and it's certainly stood the test of time.
Yeah, pick it up, of course!

I remember liking it when it came out, but I don't remember too many details anymore.

This says it all. The art work is nice and the second story is better than the first. I really like it because of the portrayal of Bruce Wayne, very close to the 70's Batman. A much more laid back charming sophisticat. As opposed to the uptight angry man we've been saddled with in the pre-OYL book.

I actually bought it recently and enjoyed it. It's not long so the story can feel a bit rushed, but otherwise a really good story. And of course the intro piece by Robert Bloch sets the mood appropriately.

It's been quite awhile since I've read it, but I remember really enjoying it. As others have said, it's worth it for Mignola's art, if you're a fan.

I really liked it yes. It's got a noir/detective type of story-telling, and does it very well to me. And Mignola complimented the story with his art very well. To me it was a really great read.

Definetely worth the look if you're into Mignola's awesome astmospheric art, though its suprisingly over fast. Haven't read Master myself...

Is that a Bernie Wrightson piece of art that you have for your avatar? Perhaps from Eleven Eleven?

No, its my own art, and I've never heard of Bernie Wrightson up until now, and art looks spectacular indeed. And whats Eleven Eleven?

Well sir, that is some very nice artwork then. In my opinion, very much like the macabre art of Bernie Wrightson.
It has been a while since I've read Eleven Eleven, but it is a story of gargoyle type creatures that are befriended by a human girl. It kind of chronicles the different reactions of the different clans of gargoyles to this human girl.

I love the Mignola art, much better IMHO than in The Doom That Came to Gotham. You know by my user name I'm a big GbG fan. Someday I hope to write the definitive Victorian Batman tale. Until then, GbG works for me.

Can't remember a single thing about the Gaslight story, but I flipped through the book just a few days ago and the Mignola, Russell art looks as gorgeous as ever.
