I'm all over this one! Madame Xanadu is one of my all time favorite characters and I'm sure Wagner will do the character justice.

Matt Wagner now has me planning on buying Madame Xanadu and Zorro, two books I'd never go for if he weren't attached. I should just send him a check every month.

Dang. Matt Wagner said at Wizard World Chicago that he's only confirmed for the first ten issues, and will decide after those are done if he wants to continue with it or not.

Any Matt Wagner is good news, and there was that recent announcement that Phantom Stranger now belongs to Vertigo (at least for the time being)...

Who is Madame Xanadu?

What I posted on the solicitations thread:

I dont have an idea who Madame Xanadu is and what her history is in Vertigo or somewhere else but i will pick it up cause of Wagner the creator of Sandman Mystery Theather,Batman and Monster Men(not cause of his Trinity like the link says)

Its a shame Wagner doesnt draw it, i like his art.

Madame Xandu originated in one of DC's later Horror titles, Doorway to Nightmare:

From which she graduated to her own series by Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers:

...which lasted, ahem, one issue. But fret not, Englehart and Rogers took their plots to an independent publisher for a 3 issue mini series, slightly changed the character's look and name to Scorpio Rose:

... a 3 issue mini which, ahem, lasted 2 and ended on a cliff hanger. Pretty pictures, though, and a special appearance of the Celestial Madonna, whom Englehart had introduced in JLA and taken to the Avengers as Mantis. He liked taking his enigmatic female characters from publisher to publisher, it seems.

Meanwhile, DC kept using Madame Xanadu as a supporting character in the 80s Spectre series and had her occasionally team up with the likes of Superman.

She is not to be confused with Charity, who was also the host of a DC Horror book, also a tarot card wielding fortune teller and had a supporting role in Robinson's Starman.

Really exciting about this series I've been anxiously waiting for it to come out since Wagner announced it. Don't much about Madame Xanadu but I like the premise and the character sounds interesting enough. I'm just not a fan of the art.

Mde X owns a...'curio'...shop which appears and disappears the way such shops do, it seems; there when the need is great. She has some magic power, although as I recall, she basically sets things in motion and it's up to the subject to cause the result. Her pevious appearances, as beautifully deliniated above (thank you!) have been interesting, and beautifully illustrated. One of the few comics I ever bought just because the covers were so lovely!

What Wagner will do with her... well, wait and see, wait and see, and hope.
