View Full Version : Importance of Hulk #466?

I've been scanning all my back issues lately and was flipping through the few Hulks I have... Peter David's run in the mid-400's was pretty solid fun, I thought and climaxed with the death of Betty Banner in #466...

The Hulk is not a title I've followed really since that happened... Is Betty still dead? If not, when/how did she come back? And, if she is still dead, why does this particular book seem to be as unimportant as it seems to be?

Betty's burial was the last Hulk issue I bought, but from what I got on the net her state was left undecided long enough for her return (apparently engineered by the Leader) not to have as great an impact as it would have had shorty after her demise. She's not back with Bruce, in any case, and he got married again since (with an alien girl who promptly shuffled off this mortal coil).

I've read the Planet Hulk hardcover, and I don't think Hulk ever even mentioned having been in love with her... (his "past love" phantasm was actually Jarella).

If memory serves, the death of Betty Ross Banner was almost immediately reversed by the next writer, who indicated that big Daddy T. Ross had grabbed the body and placed it into statis tube in the basement. I'm not sure how long they continued that, but I believe that was the "out" they employeed to undo the master stroke that Peter David delivered when his wife left him. (seems to me that Emil Yabonski/Abmonination was behind it all)

Maybe someone else can fill in more details on this...

You're correct; it was even at the very end of Peter David's final issue (on two pages written by someone else). But Betty was dead in that stasis tube; it was justmeant to keep her from decomposing until some way was found to revive her.

Oh, well, at least they didn't pretend that she was dead-dead-dead, like they're doing right now for Cap...

that's disheartening... thanks for the info guys.

I didn't have all of PAD's run, but I liked what I did have, and having Betty die at the end was perfect... I've never cared about the Hulk, but that storyline definitely made me care about both the Hulk and Betty... Even that last issue with Rick in the future... with Bucky's suit and Betty's ashes on the mantle behind him... it was all rad.

I was afraid that stasis tube crap at the end of 467 was going to end up reversing that storyline. *sigh*

Thanks!
