View Full Version : Pipeline This Week - San Diego and More!

There's a lot coming up this week:
* Tuesday, 24 July 2007: Pipeline #528: A preview for San Diego. I was going to do reviews, but just ran out of space and patience. But that column will include what to look for in San Diego, what I'll miss in San Diego, people you should visit at the convention, updates and corrections from last week's column, and more. It's about a 3000 word column as it stands right now, and I might sneak in a preview of a Marvel title, while I'm at it. I have some thoughts on ONSLAUGHT I think I might type up.
* Tuesday, 24 July 2007: The Pipeline Podcast, covering the new comics coming out the next day, the Preview Night of San Diego.
* Thursday - Sunday mornings, 26 - 29 July 2007: Pipeline Commentary and Review covers the San Diego Comic Con, even without me being there. I'll still have daily thoughts on the con, and it won't be exactly what you're expecting either. Friday morning's column, for example, will cover the Image Founders panel, hours before it happens.
* Thursday - Saturday nights, 26 - 28 July 2007: Pipeline San Diego Podcasts, covering the day's news, and maybe some interviews with people on the con floor.
* Tuesday, 31 July 2007 - Pipeline Commentary and Review #529: I'm not sure. It might have my serious reactions to the news of the San Diego Comic Con, as everything wraps up. Or it might just have the reviews I've written up of several original graphic novels in the past week. We'll see what it needs to be next Sunday.
I'm tired already.

Augie - the hardest working man in show busi...err, online comics commentary and review, ladies and gentlemen!
That's quite a busy week you've got planned there for yourself. I figured that you'd take the week off by not going to SDCC this year.

I'm just picking out my plan of attack for panels and autographs now. I'll plan on the plane too. ;)

Trip - I just can't let go. It's impossible. And every year around this time, I get the adrenaline rush pushing me though it all.
Jamie - Be at the ready. I may need to call you while you're on the con floor. heh heh heh

That would just make me cry, I fear. I need time to brace myself before calling San Diego these days, I'm afraid.

Oh dear god, he's updated the show notes twice in one week. Someone hold me, I'm scared. How can we be sure the current Augie isn't a pod person? Or maybe he cloned himself to give him enough time to do all this extra podcasting and show noting. How soon will the Augie apocalypse come? I'm going to stock up on water and shotguns. :D

Augie The Skrull!
That explains all the ASTERIX reviews lately, at least. . .

Excellent. . Enjoy the show, Jamie. It'll just get crazier from here. The show floor should be a little less packed tomorrow when the panel rooms open up.
Oh, and it looks like Dark Horse's "HUGE" news is that they're bringing back INDIANA JONES, while reprinting the old Marvel IJ stuff. I used to have the TEMPLE OF DOOM movie adaptation somewhere. . .

It's good to see The Ghostbusters are still patrolling the con floor. Yowzas, you saw a lot of people already, Jamie. Congrats.
Love the crowds:

Cool! Keep the pictures coming. I'm looking forward to a CBR photo parade from Jonah and will be keep tabs on the SDCC flickr pool (http://www.flickr.com/groups/sdcc2007/). Should be an insane 4 days if the reports of the crowds from the Preview Night are any indication.

It wouldn't be a con without a Steve Lieber sighting would it?
Who or what is this? (http://picasaweb.google.com/pmpknface/SDCC_Preview_Night/photo#5091392616720591954)
Ryan Ottley? (http://picasaweb.google.com/pmpknface/SDCC_Preview_Night/photo#5091392788519283906)
Anyone I should know? (http://picasaweb.google.com/pmpknface/SDCC_Preview_Night/photo#5091392865828695282)
Michael Golden? (http://picasaweb.google.com/pmpknface/SDCC_Preview_Night/photo#5091392938843139362)

And, yup, that's Michael Golden with Renee Witterstaetter (sp?) at his side.

Sorry guys! I labeled the creator pics when I saved them. More pics w/in the next hour.
Augie... it gets nuttier by the minute! ;)
Yes, that's me in the orange shirt w/ Greg Horn. I met a ton more that I didn't take pics of too.
That "WTF" pic - you KNOW I just had to have that pic. He had on a mask and a f'n poncho. This is great. You aske people for a pic, and the POSE for you. That's the pose I got. What is it? Your guess is as good as mine.

FYI - If you read this:
A fan asked about a possible return of Nextwave, and Brian Reed announced that Nextwave will appear in upcoming issues of “Marvel Girl.”
It's not NEXTWAVE, it's Machine Man. And it's Ms. Marvel not Marvel Girl.

I haven't quite decided about whether or not I am excited about the new ASTONISHING X-MEN and AMAZING SPIDER-MAN creative teams. Any thoughts?
Bianchi is an interesting (at least to me) choice for Astonishing artist, but Ellis as writer seems to been there, done that.
Slott & Guggenheim and McNiven & Jimenez are good choices for writer & artists on Amazing but I'm not sold on the others. It's hard to envision guys who have been so closely associated with the X-office (Bachalo & Larocca) working on Spidey.

I'm excited about all of it. We'll see how long Bianchi lasts on ASTONISHING, too. He doesn't strike me as the type to stick around on one book for too terribly long. I'm sticking to my One Year At Best prediction.
Slott for Spider-Man is the best hiring for a comic we've seen in some time.

Ellis and Bianchi on Astonishing won't make me bump that book up to picking it up monthly, but I'll still buy the trade. To be honest I haven't seen much of Bianchi outside of Seven Soldiers, so I'm not that excited about him. Marvels line of calling him a superstar sounds like a lot of hyperbole. I guess his Wolverine run looked good, but I'm not reading it.
I'm still a little confused on the Amazing teams, but I haven't read all the news super close. I'm still wondering if the writer/artist are doing a month/stories worth of book in a row. That's what I'm assuming, but I don't know if I've read anything that confirmed it. Appently the fans in San Diego were more concerned with Black Cat ,twice, to ask decent questions.

Each creative team will do one story for three or four weeks, before the next creative team goes.
The part I'm not 100% sure about, though, is if the teams stay together. I thought I read one interview that said the artist and writer teams will switch up along the way.

Wholeheartedly agree. Loved his take on Spidey in the pages of She-Hulk & The Thing and thought that the FCBD issue was top notch as well.

I think that you are right. In the CBR interview, it mentions that there are still artist hires to be announced so maybe some of these artists won't be on the book full-time. I know that one singular artist can't handle this type of schedule (even JR JR) so it'll be interesting to see if the different writer/artist combo affect the flow of the book.
