View Full Version : People calling the Hulk Bruce

I'm reading this series and a large number of people keep calling the Hulk Bruce. The first person that I've seen to call him Hulk to his face was Rick. Yes, it's common knowledge that Hulk and Bruce are the same person. But, hasn't it been established that Hulk and Bruce are separate identities, essentially separate people? I can remember a number of comics where the Hulk gets extremely mad when people referred to him as Bruce. So, calling him Bruce wouldn't help to defuse the situation. Or, is this some pathetic attempt to try to appeal to Hulk's softer side. It seems to me, these heroes need to give Hulk his respect and use his name and not that of his alter ego. It might mean less of a beating. Doesn't really matter though. A beating is a beating and the Hulk is giving them out like candy. GO BIG GREEN!!!

They are trying to appeal to him personally as a friend, hoping that Bruce will stop the violence. I don't think they realise Banner is in there and just as pissed off at how they dealt with him and the bomb on Sakaar.

heheh.
Yes - starting a conversation with Hulk and calling him Bruce is a pretty big nono. It suggests like She Hulk said - that they are trying to reach the man inside the 'monster'. Hulk isn't exactly stupid and even when he was childlike he was very empathic.
So yes it's a huge insult to Hulk to suggest that HE isn't worth talking to but Banner is.
Rick has been friends to both Bruce and Hulk and he never , ever gets them mixed up. It's one of the reasons Hulk AND Bruce have affection for him but - if you ask me- Hulk likes him more than Banner does.

And that what led to their downfalls during the course of WWH so far. :D

Again the heroes believe this to be the same ole Hulk. Calling him Bruce is only pissing him off more.

Exactly. The only Hulk you can get away with calling Bobby/Bruce/Banner is Merged.

That is a very powerful point and something the heroes might not get.
To be fair, though, it could either be THAT or the equivalent of, say, Superman calling Batman Bruce when he's gone too far in something, or vice versa with Batman calling Superman Clark.

Well, it's understandable that the Hulk, if ever so slightly, likes Rick more than Banner. After all, Rick IS to blame for creating the Hulk in the first place, if it wasn't for him Banner would have never been caught in the Gamma explosion. He probably feels guilty about it, but hey, he's human.
But you know, I think with Banner and the Hulk being in cahoots, at least over the whole Sakaar/WWH deal, I don't think it'd piss off the Hulk to be called Bruce, so much as I'd think it'd piss off BRUCE that people are trying to stop him and the Hulk from their righteous vengeance.
Everyone: Bruce, please stop!
Bruce: Oh no you didn't! SLAP 'EM, HULK!

If it weren't for the fact that the writer and editor have revealed Banner is on Hulk's side on this, I wonder how many people would be confused that Hulk didn't say "I'm not that puny Banner" or words to that effect.
People call him "Bruce" because they want to reach the man within. They don't seem to realize that the man within is helping the monster.

It does sound like the equivalent of "Hey, Bruce, control your monster". Like telling someone to stop their dog from peeing on the carpet.

How exactly does someone ACCIDENTALLY plant a bomb or insert a self destruct mechanism? These are two of the smartest men alive in Reed and Stark, I don't think either would build or install something accidentally. It's not like Reed couldn't have reached in and pulled it out.
"Oh no, I've dropped a megaton bomb next to the engine! I was planning to use that next week! Oh well, I can build another, I'll just solder it in and no one will notice..."
I don't see that being at all likely.

If it weren't for the fact that the writer and editor have revealed Banner is on Hulk's side on this, ...
I'm not disputing this but when did this happen? I don't recall any Banner appearances after he was seen shortly after the Spikes fed off Hulk. And prior to that, he was trying to convice Hulk that Hulk shouldn't play hero and should go off to be alone somewhere.
The thought of Banner supporting Hulk in his vendetta is appealing but I didn't think that had been established. What might I have missed?

I think Dan Slott said that Banner is just as pissed as Hulk in an interview.

Am I the only one moved by how tenderly Hulk puts his hand on Rick's shoulder? That's some serious love right there, you can really tell the deep bond between both of them. I love those kinds of moments in comics. Anyone who calls Hulk a monster should seriously look at those panels.

Yeah, people keep insisting (all single minded Hulk-like) that it was A BOMB.
Where have we ever seen confirmation of that?

How does a proven hero like Reed or Tony DELIBERATELY plant a bomb? I recommend that you ask the Marvel writers, because they can make these characters do anything, regardless of past history.

Which is a good point. Why do we say "bomb", should we not technically say "Warp drive compromise"?
Okay, so it TAKES longer ;)

I guess it comes down to who actually made the spaceship that shot Hulk into space. I'm doubting Blackbolt, Xavier or Dr Strange would even have the know how to make one.

Close enough. Way I heard it, people used to think Bruce Springsteen was getting boo'd, when people were yelling BRUUUUUUCE! This being the opposite.

Funny you say that, I went to see The Boss a few years ago and he and Van Zandt had a little banter back and forth about it which led to duelling "STEVE!" "BRUCE!" chants to show we were saying their names right, then into duelling solos and then into "Dancin' In The Dark". Good times.

A "bomb" is something which is definitely intentional. A "Warp drive compromise" may or may not be. It may have been made into a bomb, but we don't know that for sure. Statements from various writers saying "person X isn't responsible" or "person Y didn't do it" does not mean that someone else did. Maybe nobody did it.
