Or, if you want a little more than a link, the scientist who became The Brain was experimenting with grooming super-intelligent animals. Mallah was one of his greatest successes, so he kept him around as his personal assistant. After the scientist was killed in a lab accident, Mallah saved his brain and kept it alive in a computer, at which point the scientist started going by "The Brain."

It is uncertain if the two somehow survived the explosion, or that they were brought back to life by some alteration of reality (in Zero Hour, the world was destroyed and recreated with subtle differences, and in Infinite Crisis, Superboy-Prime's pounding on the walls of reality created ripples which corrected reality and caused history to repeat itself for several characters).
