I love how you're using the stroke colors to add extra dimension to your drawings. Maybe it's the Greek reference of Gorgon's design, but as far as animation goes, your stuff is reminding me of the Disney Hercules movie, the animation of which I loved...

Thanks, Matt! For Drawing in Photoshop, I mainly think in layers and use the Lasso a lot... kind of like stenciling... but these were all done in illustrator, which i've known how to use for less than a year. So i may not be able to give many pointers on that...

Thanks for the kind words, everyone- but as far as requests go, i have a list of (originally) 150 characters, and i have people choose numbers at random, dictating which character i do next. I believe all of those characters with the exception of Darkhawk are on the list, New Breed... and I WILL be doing the FF & Avengers... eventually. Actually, there are 4 avengers completed: Scarlet Witch, Warbird, Luke Cage, and Jack of Hearts.

Thanks, everyone... your enthusiasm for these is all i need to motivate me to do more.. and as far as sequentials go, i'll see what i can do come May... but until graduation i REALLY don't have time for that. Jack picked the numbers for Kitty & Magik in.. Early October? And i just did them THIS WEEKEND. who knows when i'll get around to Beast & Silver Sable. Wow! You really capture the essence of most of the characters--if not all of them--and you've got some great costume designs, as well. Any chance of seeing a Storm? What about a Wonder Woman, Batman, or Superman, but with updated costume designs? You've really got a flare for that. Some of these costumes have a real vintage look without looking dated. It's incredible. Anyway, I don't want to overwhelm you with requests, but you've definitely got a gift, and I'd like to see more of it--as would everyone else, I'm sure.

As for criticism ....the only criticism I might have is with Captain America . Not so much him , HE looked great ...but to me , the shield looked a little off . That's really it . I've loved everything else .
Ok wait .... one other I had a prob with , and this was just a design choice you made .... the Emma Frost one . I didn't think the outfit was all that sexy .... she's all about the barely there look . She herself looked great but the outfit didn't click , I thought . That's it .

I always LOVE getting criticism. It's really cool to hear ways in which i could be better. Let me address what i can:

Cap's Shield bothers me too.. i think it has to do with the colors not being the same as his uniform. When i go back to touch him up, i'll see what i can do w/ the shield.

As for Emma, i understand that she usually opts for the half-naked look, but i wanted to explore a little sub-dued sexiness- i mean, it's not the frank quitely suit, but if you were 15 and the principal of your school came in to teach your class wearing the costume i gave her, are you telling me you wouldn't be paying extra attention? ;) But i understand what you're saying.

As for Spidey- he happens to be in my next batch! How's that for timing?

Actually, yes. I have worked on several of my own comics over the years, the most current being "Comic Book Dude & Vegetarian Girl" which you can find a link to in my signature.

But i think you're suggesting something a little more traditionally super-hero-y in nature. I used to have this comic that i'd work on w/ my friend Scott called "Tales from Apex City", which featured a city-of-heroes-esque environment, and some truly wacky characters. Unfortunately, we never could get beyond the first story. (we kept re-writing it over and over, always unsatisified...) But maybe someday, i'll resurrect those old designs and doodle-ize 'em. Maybe it'll lead to something greater?

I tried something new w/ this batch- instead of eyeballing my sketches, i scanned them, and then traced over them in illustrator- it was a lot quicker, and i think it worked out well.

But if you don't, please tell me. I'd love to be able to refine the process as much as possible!

(oh, and you might notice Dani's suit is a little different from the other NM's suits.. that's because hers has elements of the Academy X suit i'm working on... :D so stay tuned.)

As a special little bonus, I've decided to throw in a revised version of Jean.. i was never happy with the one i posted before.. but you can still see that version in the eariler pages of the thread- i'm not going to delete it. But i like this one better. Thoughts?

I didn't know what to expect from you with Spidey, I knew you were planning on keeping his threads the same so I wasn't sure how you'd work it into your style. It turned out great, though, nice Spidey pic and very you.

Dani looks great, and Jean is a definite improvement, absolutely love what she's wearing.

As for Meggan, she's probably my favourite of all your doodles so far! Captured her personality beautifully, and the use of the leaves turned out really great, I really wish this were her look in the comics! Great effect on her hair too.

And Apocalypse... man, did i change him up. I never bought the little tiny man inside a large robot gig that Marvel had him doin'... so I made him this crazy Egyptian Zombie/Vampire that sucks the life out of you with a touch. This is how he's able to live so long. Kinda like Rogue, but waaay more extreme.

I think I mentioned before that I've never been fond of Apocalypse's look, but your version is a hundred times better. Its the kind of redesign that, were it in the comics, I'd be studying for hours and getting excited to see other artists' interpretations of it. I also appreciate how you thought about the character and worked that into the design. Wonderful.

Green Goblin is brilliantly manic, I love the sharp, sleek look of his vehicle thingy (the name of which escapes me currently).

Iron Fist is another character I've never cared for visually but you've really sexed him up and it works bigtime.

I think I like Mystique's black costume better. Black rubber is so much nastier, which is perfect for Raven. ;) Great stuff.

Namorita is my favourite! I was so excited to see her and you didn't let me down! I love both the colour palettes, I think my favourite is the blonde one cos that's the look I prefer in the comics but both work fantastically. I'm so in love with the redesign of her little ankle wings!!

Hoo-boy!

New Computer, and new drawing tablet means... new way of doing doodles! All of these were done COMPLETELY on the computer, and by hand instead of by mouse. In other words, i didn't sketch them out in a sketchbook first. Can you tell a difference? Are they better or worse? More controlled?

Anyways, the feeling of increased control tempted me to go back and fix some others before i posted the new ones. So without further ado, on with the show!

I love love love Rahne, Crystal and Rachel the best, I think, though I'm going to have to look at them all a few more times to take it all in. I love the exaggeration in Crystal's hair, its so seventies and sooo perfect for her. Rahne has, genuinely, never looked better. She-Hulk looks so powerful and yet still feminine, as she should. And I cannot wait to hear what Rachel the poster has to say about Rachel the doodle!

The three 'fixes'? Outstanding, absolutely outstanding. You've got major talent in those fingers, boyo. ;)

First of all, let me say that your style isn't normally up my alley, for whatever reason. I would never expect to enjoy seeing you post new characters nearly as much as I find that I do. Your design sense is unique and I wish I could see most of these characters looking like this in their own books! In short, I love it even though I shouldn't!

I know that you've got a backlog of characters to do, and much like RonnieThunderbolts (another artist whose versions of characers I love seeing - hey, maybe he should do his versions of your versions...) you don't do requests, but are characters like the Purple Man, Black Cat, Nova, or Nightshade anywhere on your list? I'd imagine they'd be particularly neat, so I hope we get to see them some day. You and Ronnie should be forced to quit your day jobs and just produce pictures for us all day... :D

I just been through all the pages, because I hadn't seen all your designs, and I must say, you've got some impressive stuff here. I really like your take on the Inhumans, and the New Mutants(you do know you've drawn almost all of them save for Cannonball, Warlock, Doug, and Karma right?) Can't wait for the rest of those. Also, I totally dig the vibe with my main man Luke Cage, so can I say "Sweet Christmas!" on that drawing. His partner Iron Fist was tight too. Oh man, I also loved that Jubilee pic, and I know you did Husk too, get crackin' on my boy Synch when you get the chance lol(**I know, Iknow, pick the magic number*lol.) Well... look at Mr. Imagination! This is some great work, I actually think this is another jump forward for you this time, you've always been good at interpreting characters and enhancing their features into your own style, but you've really moved forward with that this time. I don't think I'm expressing what I mean very well, but hopefully you get what I'm saying.

Sinister and Kang are the best examples of that, wonderful redesigns on both of them, really different for them both and yet true to the characters they are. Just like your interpretations of Venom and Apocalypse - you seem to have a real knack for resculpting the bad guys!

Mockingbird looks amazing, I love her facial expression and hair particularly, and the sheen on her leggings is perfect.

Hawkeye looks like a badass. Quite right. ;) And I really like the materials in his costume, really well suited for him. Nick is also looking good, I like the way you did the smoke effect.

Having said all that, my favourite is Rogue! I was looking through her costume gallery on UXM.net tonight and this is easily my favourite look for her! She looks sexy, sassy, feminine, strong, vulnerable... all the elements of her character are there, blended into your own style and a lovely costume design. I really really really wish she were wearing this in the comics, its a thousand times more stylish and striking than the trenchcoat.

Unfortunately, it won't be here. Since my computer broke in august, I lost all of the doodles you've seen on this thread. Which kinda sucks, because i really liked doing them.

I didn't just lose these... i lost everything i'd done in the past five years, and it was kind of an emotional blow. It was like the equivalent of having a fire burn down your house and all your posessions, only it was in my computer. I could've gone on making new doodles, but I just didn't have the heart to do it. I was drained with the whole process, having lost the 60-some odd ones i'd already made.

But it's November now, and i've had plenty of time to distance myself from that. So, instead of pretending it didn't happen and going on with this same series of drawings, i've decided to close this thread and re-open a NEW one with all new stuff in it! And i sincerely hope that this thread doesn't get deleted, seeing as how it's the only place these drawings exist now...

But in any event, I want to thank everyone again for all the kind words, and i hope to see you in...

I totally did copy them all, but since they're just jpgs (of varying quality), i mainly only use them for reference. If you want to see the new doodles, you can find a link to the new thread in my sig. :)
