I've never read the Tim Drake ROBIN series or the Cassandra Cain BATGIRL series except for odd issues, so maybe someone here can help supply a clue to this clueless fan:

I did read the one Batgirl issue where Cassandra donned the former Batgirl's old outfit. In that issue Tim guest-stars and seems to seriously mack on Cassie in the classic costume.

Was there any heat between the two of them, in any other appearances?

I also read the issue where, for some reason, Lady Shiva becomes Drake's trainer. Given the later revelation that Shiva was Cassie's mother (I think), this would have certainly complicated a romantic relationship, if any. If there was said heat, did Shiva know of it?

Besides that one (one-sided) occasion you mentioned, there never were any hints about this.

Naw, Cass and Tim are friends. Just friends; I think they saw what happened the last time a Robin tried to hook up with a Batgirl.

BTW, how exactly did Shiva become Robin's teacher?

Actually, there -was- an "elseworlds" story that took place in "the future" where Tim was Batman and Cassandra was Batgirl (woman) and they were actually married.

But yeah, basically an elseworlds. It was in the Daimon Scott "Solo" book.

In the recent Robin series and Teen Titans East storyline Cassandra has a fixation with Robin under the effects of Deathstrokes drug. She does seem to act very intimately around him

It is unfortunate that the DC editorial board made a decision to set Batgirl on a path towards the villains' ways. Tackling the unique relationship between Cass and Tim's friendship was not followed up. This is the underlying mistake DC has made, that hopefully gets corrected.

Whoever is the next writer on Robin I hope they really fix that and it appears Beechen is leaving the door for it given her last appearance in the book.

I had forgotten all about that bit with Tim thinking she looked hot in Babs's old costume, but I dug around and found a copy of the story. For anyone who's interested, it was in "Batgirl #45." Babs reminisced at the start of the story about what it was like to wear that costume as the original Batgirl, way back when. Among other things, she fondly remembers how Dick used to give her looks he probably had no idea he was giving when she ran around in that outfit, back when she was 18 and just starting to have real adventures as a costumed crimefighter. So on impulse, Cassandra borrows the old Batgirl outfit (without asking permission) and goes out to fight crime in it to see if she feels any different than she does in her usual costume.

In order to preserve the theme of "Robin really NOTICES Batgirl when she's dressed that way" we get to see the old magic still works for the latest-generation Robin and Batgirl. Hence, there was one bit where Tim blinked at the change in look and then admiringly told Cassandra she looked "hot" in that outfit, and a page or two later he warned her Batman would seriously ground her if he ever caught sight of her running around in that thing. Then Casandra went back to the tower and gave Babs her costume back, and apologized for breaking off one of the high heels by mistake, and Babs said something like, "Don't worry about it -- I used to do the same thing all the time."

It seems to me that the general implication was that yes, Tim thought Cassandra looked very attractive dressed that way, but no, Cassandra didn't particularly care what he thought and wasn't going to keep wearing that silly get-up every night just to make him happy. She went right back to her usual Batgirl outfit for the rest of her title without any particular signs of regret for what might have been if she had kept the one with the silly high-heeled yellow boots instead :)

You could make an argument, I think, that Tim was just trying to compliment her by telling her how eye-catching the outfit was, without seriously developing any plans of asking her to start dating him regularly or anything like that. It was basically a one-time gag to "confirm" how nifty that old costume was if your mission statement was to capture masculine interest.

P.S. I've posted below, as an attachment, a link to a cover scan of that issue. I wanted to actually show the image, but apparently I didn't know what I was doing? :o

For me, recently, there's been a subtle hint of romantic tension between Robin and Batgirl, eversince the end of the War Games storyline. They worked well together during their time in Bludhaven, and since OLY, Cassandra has seemed to have a big interest in Tim, a la the first arc of Robin OYL as well as in the Teen Titans. Still, it could be attributed to the fact that Deathstroke was messing w/ Cassie's mind.

We need to hook up Tim with Cassandra.
