* I search the on-line comic retailer sites and find them woefully lacking in one important area.
* Yet Another ASTERIX review, this time about a CAULDRON.
* A look at everything else in PREVIEWS besides the Marvel stuff I talked about last week.

And The Pipeline PREVIEWS Podcast is coming up later this week, too!

What, they don't have an Augie only discount section?

Good point. That would make it TWO important areas.

I remember as a kid I was traumatized by Asterix and the Cauldron, because the banning from the village seemed so cruel and tragic to me.
Even today, while I appreciate the quality of it in a theoretical way, I don't really enjoy reading it.

Augie, you need to start shopping at mycomicshop.com. Twenty-four Asterix trades when I ran the search.

I see Chad beat me to this! I've been shopping with Lone Star Comics, which is my comic shop dot com, for over two years, so i popped over there after I read your column, Augie. It takes a little longer to get books, as they confirm, pull and then send over a couple days, but they've done me well (especially after an unpleasant experience with mile high that soured me on them BIG TIME).

And you mention midtown comics but not their site? They're my other on line go-to, and they've got a couple Asterix books listed. You've gotta be ready to pay 4.50 for postage, tho, never fun.

Just thought I'd echo Chad and shed another ray of hope?

And another thing, Augie. You wrote:

The HERO Initiative got the OK from Marvel, so they're printing up a ten dollar paperback to show off all of the covers they auctioned off from ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #100. That ought to be a nice addition to anyone's collection -- including the first new McFarlane Spider-Man art in ages -- as well as being a nice way to help out a deserving charity.

BUT I was reading elsewhere that the McFarlane piece will NOT be included in this collection... because he's McFarlane, I guess.

I second (or is that third?) the recommendation of mycomicshop.com/Lone Star Comics! I've been very happy with their service. I'm currently tracking down the 18 months of Spider-Man books that I dropped at the tail end of the Clone Saga and the prices, condition and packaging have all been top notch.

SERENITY collects the three issue mini-series telling the story set between the FIREFLY TV show and the movie. It's a hardcover book, co-written by Joss Whedon, with solid art from Will Conrad, and colors by Laura Martin. It's only 96 pages, but it is full color and full size.

THE ESCAPISTS gets a hardcover collection with 160 pages at the same price point, though it does so by shrinking the page a little to 7 by 10 inches. (I mentioned this in my review of the series earlier this year, when I noticed the slightly larger lettering.) It's a great mini-series from Brian K. Vaughan, Jason Shawn Alexander, Steve Rolston, et. al. Comic book fans will enjoy a lot of the inside humor, and it hits a great price point for the format.

GOON: CHINATOWN is a new original graphic novel from Eric Powell. It spans 128 pages in full color, at the same page size as THE ESCAPISTS.

except serenity is oversized and escapists is normal sized... you're too used to those asterix books!

Josh - I'm being thick here tonight. What did I miss? I guess I should have pointed out specifically that SERENITY had the regular page size? I sorta inferred it when the next book I mentioned pointed to its smaller size. . .

Everyone Else - Yes, I've been getting two e-mails all day: (1) McFarlane's Spider-Man cover isn't in the book, and that'll be the subject of a rant of epic proportions in the next column, and (2) MyComicShop.com has ASTERIX. Honestly, I just missed that one. Since I have successfully blocked most ads through Firefox extensions, I forgot about MyComicShop. They should advertise on some podcasts!

Augie,

I bet if you emailed DCBS they'd have them. For example, I asked about Strangers in Paradise tpb's before, because they weren't in the Previews. And they had the codes, the price, and the DISCOUNT for all of 'em. :D

i was just pointing out that serenity doesn't have the regular page size; i forgot to mention it was 9" * 12". ESCAPISTS, at 7" * 10", is (close to) normal comic trim size.

basically, i'm being mean and telling you you were wrong in pipeline :)

Mycomicshop.com for my money is the best of the online comic sites. NewKadia is good for many things but doesn't have near the stock. (They do ship the fastest though!)

I still like Mile High, but I haven't bought anything there since I discovered the above two b/c it's just too expensive. At times, even the 40% off code word sales don't put the MH prices below Lone Star's.

Got it, Josh. I'm all messed up with the numbers, aren't I? 9 x 12 inches would be BIG, wouldn't it? COOL!

Corrections coming in next week's column.

Thanks,
-Augie

I'm a litte slow here - the Serenity Collection is oversized? I didn't pick up the TPB because it was digest sized. Drats - now I have to get this version! With it shipping in November, seems like the perfect item to put up on my Amazon wish list for Christmas!

heck yeah! unless you're oneof those people used to reading the 'over-sized' asterix books ;)

But NewKadia.com has FREE SHIPPING on every USA order, no minimum..that can't be beat in my book.
