The past week (and several, several months, actually) has been horrible. No need to get into details. :(

I need something to make me smile (and no, looking at myself in the mirror isn't working ;) ).

What makes you happy when you are feeling rather shitty? Any suggestions?

Doing something nice for someone else, just because they need/deserve it.

The feeling afterwards is pure bliss.

Quoted for truth. Random acts of kindness have their own reward.

When I'm feeling shitty, I go hug a kitty. Gives you that warm, fuzzy feeling.

I agree with Night Swordsman. Most of the time, no matter how bad a period we go through, there are others out there who are going through far worst and for a longer period. That should not diminish how your situation affects you, but what it should do is put things in perspective.
Go and volunteer at your local shelter. If you have a children's hospital, go and read to some of the children. The same can be said for your local nursing home. Heck, you could even gather a few friends and organize a clean up day for your local park, all you need are rubber gloves and garbage bags. There's so much you can do and when you're done, you'll have made a happy ending of a horrible time.

ZOMG! SO do i. Today i brushed all my kitties fur and got rid of the excess fur(it is approaching high 90s,low 100 degree weather here),and they have been very tired out and hot. I got this like HUGE pile of cat fur. I thinking of keeping it and calling it Cousin It. :D

>^..^< Yeah, I've thought about spinning it into yarn and knitting scarves. Softer than angora! ;)

"Yotsuba &" will make you feel better. It's cute and funny. Go out there and buy that manga.

Thanks everyone. We keep reminding ourselves...no matter how shitty our lives may seem today, there's somebody out there who would gladly trade places with us.

It's just been a long, crazy road dealing with some unexpected BS, and we are hoping to have it all resolved shortly.

Visiting this board also tends to make me smile. :)

Well, one thing i like to think about is eventually making it and proving people wrong.

Exercise.

Anything to clear the head for a little while.

But sounds like you don't need it anymore. :)

Following the link in Shisho's sig to the 'Cute Overload' website. Snuggly puppies and kittens and other creatures always makes me feel better.
Hope whatever you're going through gets better soon!:(

First, here's a very funny YouTube (The March of the Emperors):

Second, for me my husband, son, and daughters often make me smile... but I don't know if you have family or not. Also, my doggies---they're awesome at cheering me up. My dogs love me no matter what.

Hmmm... aside from doing something nice for someone else (as others have mentioned)... watching some cute kid videos works sometimes. Also, working on a hobby project with something I really enjoy (for me, it's often doing art, or gardening).

Oftentimes, doing something creative is a good antidote for depression (been there), especially when it involves physical labor like gardening.

Further, treat yourself to things like a nice scented bath, candles, soft music, etc. That can help too.

PS---It doesn't make me smile, but I often remind myself of the scene in the "Parenthood" movie (the one w/Steve Martin), where near the end, the grandma tells him why she loves life:

Basically, she talks about how life is a rollercoaster, and while some people prefer the merrygoround, she likes the fun and the thrill, because though your lows are lower, your highs are higher, too---and it's all just part of the ride. The rollercoaster imagery is apt, for me: I remind myself that nothing stays down forever, and sooner or later if I hang on, things will begin to move back up again.

Past experience has proven this right, for me. Not always as soon as I wanted it to, but it does work that way. Also, try to remember to see the little things that are beautiful: a sunset, a tiny flower in your grass, a placid lake or fountain near where you live, a pretty flower growing among the garbage along the railroad track, a child's laugh, a stranger's smile. There is beauty all around us, every day---but often we don't see it, because we're so focused on our own problems and lives that we miss it. That beauty can be inspiring, if you look for it.

But looks aren't everything.

Relaxing with a good book or good music always seems to help me.
