A 6 issue Countdown spinoff mini series coming in October. The Extremists are the most powerful beings from Earth 8...Lord Havok, Tracer, Gorgon, Dr. Diehard, Dreamslayer, and Carny. Written by Frank Tieri and art by Liam Sharp. Guest staring Monarch, Donna Troy, Jason Todd, Kyle Rayner, and the Moniters.
I have loved the Extremists since there first apperence all those years ago in the Justice League Europe series, and the new take on them looks to be just as good as the original. I love how they are all sort of versions of Marvels biggest badguys.
Lord Havok - Dr. Doom
Dr. Diehard - Magneto
Gorgon - Dr. Octopus
Dreamslayer - Dormmumu
Tracer - Sabertooth
Add in the fact that they killed off every hero on their own planet and the crazy factor goes up to 11. Can't wait for this one.

I might check it out, but I'd love it if Earth 8's heroes were not killed off for shock value and were some sort of underground resistance force fighting against a victorious regime of villians.;) :D

They also killed themselves , only Dreamslayer survived the explosion that killed every living thing on their planet. The rest of the later extremists were sophiscated robots.

While I like Countdown, and this could be an interesting miniseries, I can't help but agree with some of the detractors of the weekly comic when it comes to this miniseries. I'm not familiar with these characters and as they have not been seen in the main series yet I can't justify preordering this miniseries without seeing the characters and what role they're going to play in the Countdown or in the DCU. I might pick it up off the shelf if it seems really good or get it in trade but I have to wonder why this story can't be included in Countdown which I'm investing a lot of money and time into.

Ion/Kyle Rayner is supposed to be from Earth-8, right? Who else? I can't remember.

I liked them until the retcon they were actually disney world robots. Just sucked all my caring right out of me.

It wasn't a retcon. The fact that they were robots was how the "The Extremist Vector" ended. They had an off switch. It was four issues of freaking awesome comics, followed by one issue of pure crap that ruined everything.
I'm with you, though. Couldn't care less about them now.

I agree , the first 3 issues were fantastic , the ending was terrible though. The extremist were never the same after they became robots , they came back just before the ending of the JLI era. Dreamslayer appeared in the crapspectacular dan vado era following the giffen/dematties era , then the rest of the extremists appeared in a 2 issue Matrix supergirl issue with Power girl. Their last appearances was probably in the JLA/Avengers.

Didn't 52 change that?
My understanding is that Kyle would have become Green Lantern on Earth 8 in the OLD multiverse.
Whether that has anything to do with the Earth 8 in the NEW multiverse has yet to be seen.

I think by the looks of it things have been channged and they are not robots anymore but the real flesh and blood versions. Although some have been given a new look.

Don't know who came up with the new designs but it's bloody awful like the revamp CSA.
Lord Havoc looks like something from heavy metal magazine drawn by Bisley or Horley.
The original Lord Havoc was cool , his armor is designed to keep his energy form intact.

I started another thread about this-sorry. I loved the extrimists and never understood why no one ever took the concpept and ran with it, it would be easy to retcon the old "they were robots" out and give them a go again.
I'm fired up for this, I really can't wait to see what they do with them.

Actually, I strongly suspect that these characters will have little to do with the originals outside of the names; Lord Havok looks to me to be Earth 8's Doomsday analog.

Okay, that artwork officially killed any interest I may have had in this book.

I REALLY LOVE THIS COVER & I'm DEFINATLY GOING TO BUY IT.BUT WHO IS THIS CAPTAIN AMERICA CLONE?
Lord Havok looks to me to be Earth 8's Doomsday analog.
Heh, I thought the exact same thing. Before I read the solicit and saw that they were the new Extremists, I thought that was a crappy version of Doomsday from another Earth (though I don't think New Earth's version is that great either).

For some reason, I'm getting a "Civil War" satire/parody vibe from this art, which makes me want to read it even less than the ugly costume redos.
Bleh.

I was gonna read this until I saw the new designs.
I don't mind the redesignz for Gorgon, Dreamslayer and Diehard but man, the Tracer and Lord Havok were blah and huh respectively.
Diehard looks like Nemesis Enforcer from Cobra La (channeling my 80s geekhood here!)

The cover made me wanna buy it. It goes into how they slaughtered all the worlds heroes and could be on their way to ours unless the heroes like Donna Troy , Rayner , Todd and Monarch assemble to stop them.

I'm not a big fan of the redesigns either. I'll check out the first issue anyway though.
Also, I'm pretty sure Dreamslayer was the only one that wasn't a robot in the original story.

I don't mind the art like most others seem to.
It's the fact that Tieri's writing that is making me leery.

Aw, c'mon man! Why you gotta hate on Bart Sears? I love his stuff. The exaggerated musculature...it's male power fantasy taken to its visual extreme. He's not my favorite of all time, but I think there's definitely a place for his stuff in the medium. I loved his work on JLI and I loved the look of crossgen's The First.

~Sigh~ Looks like this is going to be yet another series featuring obvious and intentionally doppelgangers of another companies' characters. "DC Kills the Marvel Universe", apparently. I, for one, am tired of this. I don't especially mind occasional, one-off uses, but extended series and miniseries based on unauthorized appropriations (like Moore's SUPREME, Marvel's original SQUADRON SUPREME, PLANETARY, etc.) rub me the wrong way. I don't appreciate DC jumping into this "game". But the Tieri script assignment had already made this a no-sale for me.

It's a bit hard not to be that since that was always the concept of the characters, going back, Pre-Crisis, to the 70's.
The original "Earth-8" was always DC's Marvel U....Just like the Squadron Supreme's earth was Marvel's DCU.

If this has been mentioned on the boards at all, I apologize, and have the mod delete the thread or something. At any rate, I saw the solicits for a Lord Havok and the Extremists of Earth-whatever miniseries coming soon. From what I recall reading on the boards a year or so ago, a few people were annoyed when DC had Maxwell Lord as the villain behind Checkmate, when previously he became Lord Havok for a few issues or something and died or disappeared. DC's response was that, again if I recall, they didn't think the story was big enough or important enough that they couldn't just "pretend it never happened." So if they wanted to sweep it under the rug so to speak to reuse some characters, and felt that the original story wasn't worth copping to, why are they re-introducing the Extremists? It just seems odd to me. Thoughts?

I feel totally the opposite. I love when companies do this type of thing, re-imagining characters is fun if it's done the way the squadron supreme was done back in the 80's or the way the original extrimist storyline was done along with the justifiers.
I can't really tell what's going on in the preview pics or what I'm looking at yet...anyone wanna go through them for me...are there any characters shown that are supposed to be based off of marvel guys that I just haven't put together yet? I DON'T read alot of marvel books right now so I know I'm missing stuff.
I hope they take the time to reintroduce Wandjina, Silver Sorceress, Blue Jay and those type of characters, they were cool enough to deserve some time and I'd love to see newer versions introduced.
