It was very sweet, very beautiful. I don't really buy into the 'outsider artist', label, it makes me feel uncomfortable, but there's no doubting Johnston's sincerity. When he sings a song, usually about love or 'rock n roll' - he puts his heart and soul into it. There's no faux emoting with him, falling down to his knees and scrunching his face up like so many American Idol contestants. Instead there's a strange kind of joyful desperation and the tangible belief that love will save him from the brink.
His hands shake from the medication he's taking for his manic depression and the mood of the crowd was overwhelmingly supportive, so even the slightest comment would elicit applause. After a while though something just clicked in my brain and I really got into the songs. It was an experience.
