Clayton Moore, who played the Lone Ranger on TV, never allowed anyone to photograph him out of the mask. Even late in life when he was legally banned from wearing the mask, he work dark sunglasses custom made to be the shape of the mask. But so far as I know, he was never photographed after the show out of the mask.
And KISS, until they dropped their makeup in the 90's, never allowed any photographs to be leaked of them out of makeup.
So, could any actor/celebrity pull that off today? Or has the combination of the internet, fanboys, paparazzi, etc... made that an impossible task to take on successfully?

It'd be difficult, depending on the level of celebrity, but not necessarily impossible.
I mean, a guy like Brandon Routh, if he didn't do promotional stuff or go to premieres, I think most people would've not seen out of the Superman/Clark Kent costumes.

Well my pet conspiracy theory is that Prince actually has at least two kids that are either grown or almost grown, he's just been THAT good at keeping them out the press. Probably not likely, but will we ever be able to say beyond a shadow of a doubt?
The rapper MF DOOM is never photographed without his mask on, but I'm sure there are pictures of him during his days with the rap group KMD, when he didn't wear the mask.

I still don't know what Big Bird looks like under the mask.

Yeah, but we all saw that famous photo of Big Bird's vagina as he was getting out of a limo.

From the time he began the character until his official demasking, I don't think there were any pictures of Glenn "Kane" Jacobs. You'd have to go back to his Issac Yankem (or earlier days) to know what he looked like. That said, a pro wrestler probably isn't going to be stalked by the paparazzi much.

Kane woudl wear his mask to roll up to the arena.
Dolly Parton has stated she'd never be seen in public without her outfits, wig, and makeup, because she feels she owes it to her fans. I respect that.

If that's a mask, she should return it to the store.

He's the one on the right.
It depends on the celebrity. As much as I liked The Lone Ranger, no one cared about Clayton Moore wearing that mask until there was a new Lone Ranger movie. (Unrelated side note: My dad once golfed behind Jay Silverheels. He said Tonto was heap big into the firewater by the fourth hole.) KISS, people did try to photograph without their make-up on.
Basically, if they're a big celebrity, no they probably couldn't do it. A minor celeb could.
Sometimes fans rally around a celeb trying to keep a secret. Most Natalie Portman fansites used to mention that Portman isn't her real last name (it's her grandmother's maiden name), but refused to reveal her real last name (Hershlag) because Natalie tried to keep it secret.

Bob Dylan was secretly married to woman for 6 years. They even had a daughter.

I think that's post boob job. I'm pretty sure I have some old pics i got somewhere that are of her, pre-major celebrity. Although it's true, she does a good job of keeping everything about her secret, hair wigs, husband, etc...
I think it's possible for someone else to do it in today's world, it's just that the amount of insanity to 'keep up appearances' would probably cost them their mental health.

That whole situation was just. . . odd.

The lead singer of horror rock band Lordi was photographed by papparazzi without his costume and make-up on and fans were so disgusted that the issue of the magazine where the pictures appeared was the lowest selling issue of that magazine ever.
Which I think is cool.
It's a big thing with your masked Mexican wrestlers. There's a real taboo there about breaking the rules on that.

Do they have to wear the mask . . . ahem, in the bedroom?:D

Janet Jackson was also secretly married for 6-7 years during the 90's.
