ECW Review: " The New Breed Shows Up."

Last week ECW scored its lowest rating in quite some time. The lead in and all didn't help as Dusty was pretty much pushing to make fans forget Chris Benoit being a part of New ECW. Tonight with a new show like Eureaka around to perhaps draw a better lead in...maybe ECW can rebuild.

The Good

This weeks ECW has a new entrance opening as its Marylin Manson's new single. Not bad....but I miss Heyman's "This is Extreme" honestly.

The show opens with Matt Striker....our teacher. He's got his whole stinct going and its awesome as usual. This week he dares the Boogyman to come out and we see a replay of the last 2 weeks with poor Matt. But this time our faithful teacher has a plan ! He has Big Daddy V on his side.

Ok message to WWE. Drop the non shirt wearing as Viscera's man boobs distract from the ass kicking he's delivering. Giving a Matt Striker a bodyguard like Vis is pretty awesome and may signal a big push hopefully.

We get a HHH promo that pretty much details that whoever is on RAW and has the title will become Trips bitch .

The WWE finally wisely , shows past footage to sell Tommy Dreamer as a ass kicking , take no shit , bad ass who will fight you til he can't stand. The video package accomplishes its goal as Dreamer will face Johnny Nitro in a Extreme Rulz match. If Nitro can make Tommy have a solid wrestling match imagine what we'll get with Dreamer's main abilities using Tables, Ladders and Chairs.....OHH MY !!

Elijah Burke gets to stomp Balls Mahoney sadly again and its a short sweet match. I really think of all the guys who have signed and who have worked their asses off for Vince....Mahoney has been one. The guy for years was denied a good spot in a WCW and WWE because he never looked the part of a star after ECW went down. But here he is...a year into the WWE machine and he follows his orders as usual. Come on Vinnie...give Balls a spot on Smackdown or RAW as IC/US Champion.

We get a solid Stevie Richards/CM Punk match as the 2 deliver some new moves on each other. The best thing about a short roster is the fact some guys like Punk/Richards have fought so many times they can deliver some brutal new spots. I enjoyed this as much as the fans did . Punk wins after catching Richard off the tope rope and hell...even the fans nearly explode after one close near fall earlier! Nitro is seen watching , studying Punk. Getting ready for their ECW World title clash at GAB.

Backstage the Extreme Expose girls pretty much all turn into whores for The Miz. Its pretty sad since The Miz is what....a C Level star at best and all 3 are ready to try strip naked and throw their panties at the guy. Hell imagine if it was a A# star like a Clooney. That guy would be attacked by all 3 if this is the case.

The Miz is a pretty nice young kid though. He works against Little Guido and its a decent short match even if the fans don't care. The one good thing going for Miz is he's no longer on Smackdown and no longer has to worry about a Bradshaw who its said detested him so bad backstage it carried over on TV beyond the point of hating a heel.

Its time for the Main Event now as Tommy Dreamer comes out all pumped. The fans are jacked as is Tommy. Consider this Nitro's schooling in a sense. Tonight Tommy Dreamer will teach Johnny Nitro some things. :evilsmile

The match is pretty damn solid for an Extreme Rulz match with Dreamer now. Given his age and the fact its a WWE Extreme Rulz. Making Nitro bump all over the damn ring is pretty fun to see. The fans get pumped into it and a few start a small Nitro chant . This ends as the classic old ECW swerve using a chair is done as at 1st Dreamer,then Nitro,then Dreamer, then Nitro swerve getting a face full of chair. Nitro wins this swerve game and he holds up the ECW title looking as good as usual. To show that last week does matter... Dreamer sells his injured arm that Nitro worked over and Nitro concentrated on it again. So props to Tommy as usual.

The Bad

It appears I spoke too soon about the GAB. With MVP/Hardy for the US Title , Edge/Kane for the World and Punk/Nitro for the ECW World title...this PPV looks pretty damn good. Just forget your gonna get Cena/Lashley is my words of advice. Since both will no sell each other to hell.

The matches sadly were too short. Richards/Punk and Nitro/Dreamer should have gotten more time. Hell the 2 haven't even cut a promo against each other. Come on WWE. You gotta let Nitro and Punk have a mic battle of some kind. Have em mock Punk for something.


OVERALL: ***1/2 Outta 5. Not as good as last weeks long matches where Nitro/Dreamer had a solid wrestling match. Or we saw the Nitro/Punk program really kick off to a good start.

I think their holding him off for a face turn. Because Tommy seriously can't be the 2# face on New ECW and Monty has the character/mic ability to do it. They could be lining him up as Nitro's next face after Punk.

Layla being back was a highlight of course. As long as they keep the other two playing the Miz story, I'm good with it.

Miz continues to show his improvement in the ring that he was showcasing on Smackdown.

Stevie Richards had his best new ECW performance to date against Punk. Alot of nice striking counters and a nice submission mid-match. Crowd was into Punk as usual and he puts on another very believable, competitive "non" Superman like comeback for the win.

Viscera with no shirt? I have no idea what's that about. Thank goodness Layla and Brooke's ass can quickly erase such a image from my mind. Matt Striker is always very good on the mic though. Good to see him get mic time.

Burke is the guy who should be wearing the ECW title tonight. Nice little showcase match for him. He needs more mic time though so he can get his heat back after being screwed around with during this Nitro overpush garbage.

Nitro vs Dreamer was alright. Nice spots by Nitro and Dreamer laid out the course of the match. Best match of the night was Punk/Richards though.

Still...the sooner Punk gets the belt, the better. Enough is enough.

beats me, i'm pumped for the match and i think most will be far more xcited about it than nitro vs punk, then again they aren't pushing punk by choice.

i don't know about sac, but at the last RAW i went to in fresno cena was like the only guy anybody reacted to, rather they were booing or cheering they atleast woke up. man that crowd sucked.

Balls deserves a chance. He's worked hard , put over everyone in New ECW that they have wanted and he's shown that fans love the toothless hardcore , chair swinging freak. He would be fun to watch as every IC Title match would become a Chair match.

Being booked strong doesn't mean its gonna be a great affair. Odds are I see a Lashley/Cena match as a possible Kronik/Taker & Kane match where the 2 will no sell each other to the point its comedy. Plus its not like Lashley's got any cred. from his ECW run. They may have tried booking him as an unstoppable ass kicker against Umaga , but they also booked him to barely beat Test .

They should have booked a 3 way , had someone like Nitro win it by pinning a Smackdown guy on RAW and then have Lashley be drafted. Instead it was the usual rush to make Lashley invincable as usual and it pretty much damaged the belt. Dusty's trying to repair the damage to the belt best he can but it was a foolish move .

Lashley had a bunch of good matches on Smackdown with Finlay and Booker from last year. That's how he got over so fast. The crowd spat on the Regal/Finlay match once they learned Lashley wasn't gonna be able to wrestle last year.

The Rumble match was the match where Test didn't want to finish the match.

I think people really don't know this about Balls. But he can wrestle and has a history of it. He has more wrestling talent than a Sandman. In fact if he wanted he has shown he can work wrestling matches like he did with the short lived Striker fued last year. He can wrestle and be fun.

It was a quick 10 second promo where Nitro claimed he had a fever so his loss to Cena doesn't count ? Hell I've seen Lashley's promos for months...theres no excuse.

Hell ...Nitro had to take out Dreamer's arm to get a win the last 2 weeks. Stevie's barely on TV but him and Punk have faced each other so many times the last 2 years and so long they trotted out some new moves against each other and made a short match enertaining as hell. The fans were into it.

Ambivalence isn't the same thing as hate. I'm mildly interested in that there is a chance that Lashley might win--but that's about it.

Well, Killer Kowalski would disagree with you. The new issue of Esquire has a "What I've Learned" by the Killer, and he says flat-out, "To be a professional wrestler, you've got to be able to talk."

In my view, it's the matches that end up being irrelevant without proper build-up. If you're going to take all the abuse from a match, and you can either build it through weeks of talking to get the crowd all riled up, or not? I say on with the jibber-jabber.

Glad I saw Viscera kicking ass Tuesday, and I enjoy his "Sun and Moon" tattoos, but there's one little problem you guys haven't pointed out directly:

Dreamer is already the #2 face. Think about it. With Benoit, RVD, Sandman, and Sabu all gone that makes Dreamer the top face behind Punk.

There really are no other faces on ECW besides Punk, Dreamer, and Boogeyman. Unless there going to build The Miz up and stick him in the main event, im not even sure if hes a face though, I couldnt tell if he was the heel the other night in his match with Nunzio.

Joey also would sell Balls in Old ECW as a brawler who shockingly was also a pretty damn good wrestler as his amatuer background was discussed. In it Balls Mahoney (no clue how real this is) was wrestling amatuer matches and got pissed at the referee and dropped him on his head. Being banned from the state of Maryland.

Really.....name the promos he has cut. At least one of them. Because beyond this Nitro's promos against Foley last year was very good and got him the heat he needed to go into the Hardy fued. And even there he barely cut promos....as many of Hardy/Nitro was backstage skits where Hardy mocked him.

how is that a difference, lashley also beat test, the real difference is test was never a jobber the level of stevie. i agree it was an entertaining match but you making an issue of credability for lashley barely beating test yet when it comes to punk barely beating stevie is about as biased as it gets.

It took Lashley 3 matches to beat Test. CM Punk has beaten Richards every time. No excuse....Lashley was booked horrible against Test and made to look foolish . The booking for Punk now is one where he had a hard fought match as usual...and won. Because as the match seemed to show...CM Punk is the better guy.

i'm basing what i say on the mic work i've seen nitro do in the past, which is all we can do.

Which has to be limited since he's barely been given a mic and beyond the backstage skits with Hardy...theres been little Johnny Nitro mic work. Beyond the Foley promo thats all I can remember and thats from last summer.

how do you know that part of his game is ready, maybe it's not ready. letting him cut promos at house shows sounds like the best option to me.

Uhhh I didn't disagree with Popa. I said let him also cut promos in a mirror as Jericho did as well. Thats how he learned to grow as a mic promo guy. Nitro's other parts of the game are ready. He has the character , the talent and the ability to get heat. Once he nails down the mic promos , he's gonna be a total package for em.

Dreamer is already the #2 face. Think about it. With Benoit, RVD, Sandman, and Sabu all gone that makes Dreamer the top face behind Punk.

There really are no other faces on ECW besides Punk, Dreamer, and Boogeyman. Unless there going to build The Miz up and stick him in the main event, im not even sure if hes a face though, I couldnt tell if he was the heel the other night in his match with Nunzio.

Don't be shocked to see Monty become #2 face on the brand. For the pure reason he could do it. I could see Elijah Burke get angry at Monty for not being around and he snaps on Burke telling him that he's THE ALPHA MALE for a damn reason.

He hasn't been on TV for 3 weeks so...I believe thats what their gonna do with him.

Joey also would sell Balls in Old ECW as a brawler who shockingly was also a pretty damn good wrestler as his amatuer background was discussed. In it Balls Mahoney (no clue how real this is) was wrestling amatuer matches and got pissed at the referee and dropped him on his head. Being banned from the state of Maryland.



And no selling. Odds are punches,kicks,Lashley smiles like Cena just gave him an award and both do that for a match.

How you refernced that Styles said Balls wasn't a good wrestler in his current role in New ECW. In Old ECW Styles would say Balls was a shockingly decent wrestler. Hell last year he wrestled Striker in some decent matches. Balls can wrestle if need be. He has more wrestling talent than Sandman.

Balls can easily be popular as fans do chant BALLS for him. He was gettin some promo time last year and came off a silly hardcore goofy guy which got him face heat against Striker. Its just that sadly ECW has such a small roster and all...he's a jobber til they decide what to do with him ala Sandman.

Must have had a mute button on because I heard boos and we want Foley chants. Which they could have used after the Hardy program for Mick's return but blew it in typical fashion.

The match quality matters if your trying to get someone over as the "Next Big Thing" in the company. If your supposed monster face can't beat a wannabe mid-carder at best in good , quick fashion then it makes him look foolish. Lashley's booking against Test and Kennedy on consective PPV's was horrid. He couldn't get dominant wins like he should have as the new ECW World Champion. The matches were sub-par which made fans boo Lashley at times since he was the Champ. He was already in a tough position and the booking didn't help til Vince made his ORDER that Lashley be the focus and protected on the brand.

The differance between them is they have never jobbed Punk to Richards and made Punk wrestle 3 matches to get a win and make him look silly as they did Lashley.
