Hi, I am a pretty big comic fan, but I am trying to catch up with all of the new age stuff, and I have a few questions.
I understand, or, I think I understand that the Ultimate Series is a alternate universe, that gives the characters new backrounds and looks to update them. Is that correct?
Also, is there any comics still running outside of the Ultimate Universe?

You're right about the Ultimate U. It basically takes the classic Marvel characters and "modernizes" them while still keeping true to their fundamental story/personality elements.
But the regular (616) Marvel Universe still exists and there are still plenty of books with the original characters. Just look for titles that don't say "Ultimate" in them and you'll be set. :)

He more or less got it. Far as ultimate titles, there arent many. I think the only ongoing ones are Fantastic four, xmen, spiderman. THen you have the ultimates which is a rendition of the avengers but it comes out in limited series.
Then you have other mini series that come out under the ultimate name.
If your itching to try something ultimate I highly reccomend ultimates 1-13 and ultimate xmen 1-12. If you like those then branch out to some others.

There have been a lot of Ultimate Mini-Series, too. Ultimate Nigthmare, Team-Up, War. The current mini is Ultimate Power. Which is really good.
