View Full Version : Wally West's kids, where does it go from here?

Seeing both the kids come back at the end of the Lightning Saga all grown up struck me as odd. Not really in the standard "fast aging" process but how will Wally's book work now with both kids grown up and Wally having these new responsibilities?
Will it be a Flash family title like FF mixed in with action? Will one of the kids take up the Flash mantle now that Bart is gone? I don't know, it just seems that Wally's less relatable nowadays since he'll be settled down and stuff.
That's why it seemed good to have Bart as the Flash since we were in the driver's seat but experienced new sets of adventure and story potential for other women in his life.

Because the average person doesn't understand marriage, family, or how-- irregardless of their own, personal stance-- a man might desire these things.
That statement remains completely and utterly ridiculous, no matter what character it is currently being applied to.

It's just something I didn't expect with Wally at this point and I don't feel I would really love to see right now.
Maybe a few more years down the road but even Hal Jordan had his optioned opened back up again concerning his love life.

Do we even know their names? Are they named Iris and Barry like they are in "The Kingdom"? Or were they never named on-panel? I can't remember them being named on-panel.

If they are smart they should run back into the speed force and not come back till Dan Didiot is replaced by a less ruthless, kill all young heroes EIC. :p :D

Not yet. I guess with them being (presumably) regulars in the book we'll finally get to find out.

+1 as a father and a husband, it REALLY makes him relatable for me. Not that I needed a reason. I just hope Mr. Waid drops that stupid joe job he had before the cancellation and I actually liked everyone knowing Wally was the Flash. Again, more of an everyman.

I got the first issue of All Flash, it was pretty good.
The only issue, rather. This is why I wish DC wouldn't slap a giant #1 on their one-shots just to get people to buy them because they think it's going to be a collector's item. It gives the impression that there's going to be more.
August isn't going to have All-Flash #2, it's going to have The Flash #231.

I'm not sure why we needed All Flash #1, the various artists employed to produce the book give the impression that it was hastily thrown together. So far the return of Wally as the Flash feels forced considering this storyline was supposedly DC's plan when the Flash mantle was passed to Bart at the beginning of the Fastest Man Alive series.

Because they didn't want to jump start Wally's new series with a follow-up story to the previous title. They wanted to start fresh. Makes sense to me.

I don't believe that for a minute. I understand that the final story arc was always supposed to be the last, but there's no way I believe that Bart as the Flash was intended to be short-term from the beginning.

It's too bad his kids do not have any Flash speedster powers. This means they don't get to dies as a Flash in future DC crisis arcs.

Since the DC universe proper has been borrowing so heavily from Kingdom Come, I figure that Iris will be the new Kid Flash. I was a little puzzled as to why Wally didn't name his son Barry though. You would think that would have been even more important to him than naming his daughter after his aunt Iris.
If Bart comes back at all, I'm hoping it's a de-aged version of him; a completely different identity, or as a Flash operating in a future timeline. I really hated that they messed him up so badly after the last Crisis. Not enough explanations, even with comic book science, and really, he was just beginning to come into his own as Kid Flash, and then suddenly he's this whole new character.
Here's hoping that the older Bart that returned was an alternate multiverse version of him, and our old friend Impulse/Kid Flash is still out there somewhere.

if they are grown up then wouldn't his responsibilities be less now? Im not a parent yet, but having been raised by my mom. I believe that by the teens (maybe it only applies to good boys and girls.) parents have instructed disciplined enough that they can now loosen the rings of control on their kids knowing that up until this point they have taught them how to be responsible as best as can be expected, and that now their decisions are mostly their own.
I would think Wally a good enough parent (assuming they had something akin to a proper up bringing while "Riding the Lightning.") that he shouldn't have to worry about them to much, infact It might have been the reason why they were aged in the first place, so that from a writer point of view they aren't as vulnerable as they were before.

Speaking as a parent of an 18 year-old, no, the responsibilities are not less, just different. You used to worry about them getting into the household chemicals or sticking a fork into an electrical socket, then you worry about them getting into drugs or sex. You worry about them crashing their bike, then you worry about them crashing their car. You raise them the best you can, hope that they listened when you taught them, and hope they make good choices, but you never stop being the parent.

BTW, I hope that TERRIBLE super-torso image for the boy on the last page of All Flash doesn't ever EVER manifest in the comics.

It's been suggested that "Jai" is a homage both to Jay Garrick and to Linda's Korean heritage.

Yes, the etymology of the name is of an Indian background. Jai in Hindi is ज. It's amazing to me that an American comic would think they're making a homage to both a character named Jay and somebody's Korean background with that name.

Anybody know if Mark Waid has kids?
I'm interested to see how all this is handled. I got less of a Fantastic Four and more of a The Incredibles vibe from the last page of All-Flash. I admit, I'm stumped. I liked The Incredibles but I'm not sure how that kind of dynamic can translate to The Flash. I trust Waid, but I usually don't groove on super-powered pre-teens. I hate the Power Pack and even Teen Titans gets on my nerves.
And how come one of his kids apparently has super-strength?

Yeah I gues the Incredibles seems more likely for the Flash to take inspiration from, but the Fantastic Four were the first comic book superhuman family. :D

Well, I think some of it is the sitcom effect. You need to have the baby age for story purposes.
The other thing is that they can't be stuck as babies forever. All the other characters inch slowly to older ages (look at Grayson, Donna, etc) with older characters indeterminably 30ish, their teen proteges in their 20's and the Robins of the world as teenagers.
But babies compound the problem...you can draw an adult 20-30 roughly the same when in costume without too many worries...even teenagers are doable...but you can't have the Flash twins remaining toddlers a decade from now.

Yep. This was something that bugged me about the Kingdom future: it looked like Wally had chosen the names himself, without the mother's input at all. Though I suppose Waid might have been trying to avoid leaving any hints pointing to a particular mother, given that they were keeping her ID ambiguous at the time.

Forgive my white stupidity if this comes off as racist or ignorant, it truly isn't meant to be, but is it biologically possible for Iris to have no trace of Korean blood in her (red hair, white skin, "huge American eyes" as Trey and Matt so non-politically-correctly put it, etc)? I would think she should look more like her brother. I'm assuming they designed her this way so she would match her The Kingdom counter-part, but it doesn't sit right with me. Maybe it's just me...but isn't red hair extremely low on the gene dominance scale??

Jai is a Korean name. After thirty seconds of Googling, I came up with many different Korean names that included Jai.
From the Comic Bloc forums:
Here's the real question:
If 'Jai' is meant to be a Korean name, then then child's name mean's 'MALE'. It's often added to a name or nickname to indicate gender.
That's what I thought, but I'll defer to anyone who actually is, or knows someone, of mixed Asian-caucasian ancestry. Also, the Parks are fourth- or fifth-generation (IIRC) Iowa farmers; one of Linda's great-grandparents could have been white.
Apparently, from here it goes to the Justice League trying to take away Wally's kids. Should be interesting!

That statement remains completely and utterly ridiculous, no matter what character it is currently being applied to.
back when fans were just kids (and few adults) this argument worked because the audience would relate better to the kids.
but lots of people who were kids in the 80s and 90s (when wally replaced barry) have reached a level where wally's allowed to have more than a "girlfriend" or "fiance of the last decade".
some people still don't like it. and now they may need a new "connection" to understand the character better. but love for a wife and child is pretty self-explanatory if you make an emotional flow-chart or have had a puppy.

Actually yes...though maybe not the flaming red hair she seems to have.
I know several families that look split down the middle with children taking on the appearance of one parent's ethnicity or the other. Certainly they have some shared traits that become obvious with time, but it wouldn't be impossible (in a comic where the main character travels faster than light) for a family to look the way the West's do.
