View Full Version : The Never Ending Forum needs a new name!

Hey folks,
As the CBR Forums continue to grow (especially since the new server was installed), I've had a number of new artists and writers ask where they should post to show off their wares or to look for artists. Clearly we need a better name for this forum so they can find it easily.
So, I'm holding something of a contest -- feel free to suggest new names for this forum and the one we like the best will get a whole bunch of CBR swag (t-shirt, book, antenna balls, etc.). Just post them to this thread and we'll choose the best suggestion.
Bring 'em on!

The Drawing Board is good, but it doesn't encompass the fact this forum covers both writing and art. That being said, should we separate this forum into two, or is there plenty of room for both on this forum?
Joe Grendel

Keep it merged. The NEB has waxed and waned over the years, and one too-busy board (which rarely happens) is better than two moribund ones, IMO.

Well, being a bit of a funny guy, I recommend:
- The Carpal Tunnel

- The Imagination Sweatshop
- Palette for Art
- The "I Couldn't Think of What to Name the Art Forum" Art Forum

Well you generalized all my entries. Clearly by your argument you cannot dispute:

In fact, it explicitly started as a fan fiction forum, when the transition from KCMB to CBR happened.

I was seeking for a place to see people's comics, read comics, critique comics, post my own comics if i ever feel inspired, etc...
anyways, the search words I used were
comics creator critique forum
It didn't lead directly here.
After I revised my search down to just 'comics forum' I found this site.
anyways, 'creator' and 'critique' might be good words to have in the title. Would've made my search easier.

Part of the problem with a name like "Out of My Mind" is that it doesn't really indicate a creator's forum to a newbie who's *looking* for such a forum. I mean, we've had forums like "You'll All Be Sorry," "Lying In the Gutters," etc... so a name like that would tend to get lost. It needs to have some reference to what it *is* clearly in the name, IMO.
I like "Artists' Alley" very much, because it does just that. "Creators' Corner" almost sounds more like a place where you can go to chat with the pros, rather than a place to post your own stuff.
Likewise, "Imagine Nation," while incredibly catchy, doesn't really indicate that it's a place for us to post art, stories, links, searches for same, etc.
So, for the names already proposed, I vote for Artists' Alley as my number one choice for something that makes it easy for newbies to find.
I'll try to throw some ideas into the hat here, but frankly, I doubt I'll come up with anything as good as what's already been suggested... but here goes:
Your Pencil Den
...This one's my favorite! (Not to mention, I love a good pun.) :D
Your Gallery, Prose, and a Cuppa Joe
...Okay, this one is my other favorite. :D

Well, the problem is, we're all approaching it from the viewpoint of knowing all about what the NEF is, and what it's supposed to do, and when we want to post some art or writing, we go straight to it without really thinking about it. So a name like "Imagine Nation" or "Out of My Mind" to us naturally carries with it the purpose of the board behind the name. You have to stop, think like a newbie, and pretend you've never been to the CBR forums before, and then ask yourself "If I was reading this name cold, listed among the other forums... would I know what it's for?"
To me, "Imagine Nation" sounds like a new comic title, and "Out of My Mind" sounds like a Columnist's title.
Yes, the descriptive blurb that comes after the forum name helps, but it's the bolded forum name that's first gonna catch (or not catch) their attention.
Speaking of which, The Creators' Clipboard might not be a bad name, either. I still like better the first two I suggested, though. For one thing, having "Your" in the title helps convey the idea that YOU are the creator, rather than that you'll be talking to pro creators. *groans over unintentional pun there*

Well I'm down for whatever we decide. But you know...It wasn't that hard for me to find the forum when I first decided to look. That's what the descriptions are for. Our current description says: " Writers and Artists share your fanfic, drawings, poems, paintings, fiction, sketches, and all other sorts of artwork here. Discuss tools, techniques, and even hype your art-related website."
It makes it very clear what the NEB is.
Yet, I understand that we live in this quick and fast society....so hence the need for a new name that everyone can recognize right away. However, I'm wondering if it wasn't the forum itself but where it was located? I mean you can find your forums about Marvel Comics in the Marvel Forums, which has it sub-forums...this is under the regular CBR Forums. Which maybe why it was "hard" to find, since a lot of people come just for comics initally.

I am in complete favour of an imaginative title for the forums, but like Jonah said initialy, the problem is that many people - many shopping for new talent for their comic projects- donīt know where to start looking.
We need a simple title that - while appealing to our imagination-, shows to the casual visitor what this forum is about from the get-go.

We need a simple title that - while appealing to our imagination-, shows to the casual visitor what this forum is about from the get-go.The problem with that idea is that if you're looking to communicate all the functions that this board serves, you could end up with a name that's 50 words long.
To me this reminds me of designing logos for clients who want to communicate every single aspect of their business in a 1-inch logo. Eventually what you end up with is a mess.
I never posted here before, but I do have four ideas.

I think a simple, straightforward name would work best. Some of the suggestions so far are very imaginative, but can be a little ambiguous and have veered slightly from the original reason for the drive to rename the thread:
...I've had a number of new artists and writers ask where they should post to show off their wares or to look for artists. Clearly we need a better name for this forum so they can find it easily.
With that, purpose in mind, here are my suggestions:
- The Talent Pool
- Words and Pictures
- Show-and-Tell
In the end, though, I think new-user accessibility will be determined not just by the forum name but also by the forum's placement on the Comic Book Resources Forums hierarchy (I always thought that intuitively, it belongs under the Miscellaneous Forum subheadings myself) and the conciseness of the explanation blurb at the bottom of the forum name.

Well then there should be a clay pot challenge.
I give my vote to the one that makes a Green Lantern. Not the person. The Lantern. Let me know how many people enter that contest won't ya?
I think the TRULY RELATIVE content is writing and drawing. So to focus names based around pencils or pens. I mean I believe my point was before it went over the mod's head is that in this case "simple" is a relative term.
All kidding aside, if someone made a green lantern out of clay, I would TOTALLY buy that.
edit: I was a bit off center when writing this. I meant to say that we should take a true look and be honest about what this forum is and isn't based on the existing content since it's existence. To say that people could post pottery forces a generalization and thus why it is so hard to find a name that encompasses everything because you can't.
I think a content density check on this forum would be required to see who is ACTUALLY attracted to this forum and contributes. Only then can you truly narrow down the names that you can use.
Me and howyadoin have been saying this for a bit actually.

I think I have an idea that can settle it all.
Sub-forums.
Now hear me out. Not only would sub-forums allow respect to all types of art by giving out more specified classifications, if you use sub-forums they will be listed underneath the new name of the forum thus giving a clear indication that both artist and writers are welcome.
It would make this area much more organized and easy to manipulate. Also as a former admin of a forum, I know how easily it can be done.
If that ain't the answer, then we just WANT to chase our own tail.

I dunno, I would sort it by popularity. No more than two or three. I mean obviously there would be Art, Writing, and (just a suggestion) Wallpapers.
They could have their own names. And then everything else could go into the main area all the odds and ends.
I'm sure a little more brainstorming would be required but you get the idea.
