A new month a new thread.....
Supreme Power: Hyperion - This was a decent story, let down by Dan Jurgens's bland incredibly average (is that an oxymoron?) art. It's a shame that they've moved Supreme Power out of the Max imprint after this.
The Walking Dead v3: Safety Behind Bars, v4: The Heart's Desire, v5: The Best Defense and v6: This Sorrowful Life - A nice big catch up on Walking Dead. Good stuff as always. Charley Adlard's art has improved a huge amount from his earlier work when he was the guy you got when you couldn't afford Sean Philips. I'm sure could see hints of Möbius in there.
Adam Strange: Planet Heist - Probably the best (ie only decent) think I've read from Andy Diggle. Not spectacular in any way but he kept the story moving along at a good pace. I'm still trying to decide if I like Pascual Ferry's art. The work here was much better than his 7 Soldiers: Mister Miracle stuff, but I still can't decide.

I'm with you on that. :(
Took a trip to PA for the 4th. Even drove through Valley Forge. And only had time to read the 1st few pages of Ode To Hirohito (sp). I'll get it done soon...

Dynamo 5 #4 - Another great issue. This book hasn't disappointed yet. Highly recommended. Due to the shipping schedule, it sucks that I'm going to have to wait a month to read the recently shipped issue.
The Astounding Wolf-Man #2 - Kirkman does it again! Bit bummed that this is bi-monthly, but if each issue is as good as the first two then the wait will be worth it.
Irredeemable Ant-Man #10- Was this issue brought to you from the fine folks at Old Spice? More Black Fox goodness! Really going to miss this book - it's really hit its stride the last 3~4 issues.
Nightwing #134 - Not as good as last issue, but Jamal Igle sure drawns some great Nightwing action sequences!
Danger Girl: Body Shots #3 - Fun book as always.
New Warriors #1 - Don't have a clue who Sofia and/or Beak are, but I'm intrigued enough with the mystery and last page reveal to want to check out the next issue.
Fallen Son: Spider-Man - David Finch draws a mean black costime Spidey - definitely better than his red/blue version. Not really sure what the point of the issue was though.
Madame Mirage #1 - Wasn't overly impressed like I thought I would be while reading the previews. I'll give it a couple of more issues before deciding to pull the plug.
Omega Flight #3 - Really enjoying this mini-series.
Ms. Marvel #16 - This book has been so good post-Civil War and the MODOK storyline has been really good.
Amazons Attack #3 - much better read than the last issue. Intrigued to see if the real villain behind the book isn't the Amazons.
Wonder Woman #10 - again, much better than last issue, but that's not saying a lot as issue #9 was one of the worst comics that I have read in a long time. Thought Drew Johnson was supposed to be handling art with the Dodsons? I do like Paco Diaz' art though. I've decided to read this book through the Annual concluding Heinberg's arc and then DC is going to have a hard time getting me to continue with this book. They better have Gail out during convention season pimping the hell outta her run to try and convince me that this will be worth my time and money.

Iron Man: The Inevitable - A decent story by Joe Casey, but the real star of this book is Fraser Irving. This guy needs to continue colouring his own work. I've never seen it look so good!
Battler Briton - Garth Ennis reviving an old British war comic character. This was your standard decent Garth Ennis war story
Hellblazer (Carey) v4: Stations of the Cross - Carey's Hellblazer has been on shakey ground for me, but this volume was way better than previous ones. Very good stuff - though I didn't quite get the ending.

FINALLY read Ode to Kirohito - all 850+ pages of it! Loved it. Great stuff. I need to get into more of Tezuka's stuff, I think Apollo's Song (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1932234667/ref=wl_it_dp/105-0867919-7473215?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3R5OFRPQX13MK&colid=1CCGGG13BDTDY) is next.
Also read the latest volumes of Y: The last man and Fables, both #9 I think. Fables is just friggin' great. Loved the mini stories and the Christmas tale. Y was good, and quite revealing but not as good as other vol's. I'm still sticking around to the end though!

Read Blade of the Immortal Vol 17: On the Perfection of Anatomy last night. More holding pattern for the story, again focusing on the doctor trying to find out Manji's secret. It was okay, but not much happened. Hopefully the plot will move forward soon. Enough with manji in jail, get him out killing again.
Also read Couriers Vol 1 (my store had a buy two get third free sale on indy trades, bought new Conan trade, new Invincible trade, Couriers, two volumes of Wildcats 3.0, and Haunted.) Not bad. Really good art from Rob G, much better than the art from Repo that came out a few weeks back. Nice fun comic that moved really quick and made for a nice change after reading BotI.
And finally read Conan Vol 4 over the weekend. Decent as well. Cary Nord's art is great and there were some fun stories in this collection. Nice to see not much in the tone changed over the three writers in this volume. Now the long wait to the next collection begins.

I read:
Annihilation vol. 3 HC--I absolutely loved it! Story and art. I find it hard to comment on what I liked without spoiling it, so I'll just stick to generic "I loved it!" unless asked.
Ultimate Fantastic Four vol. 7: God War TP--Liked it, BUT the story was a bit all over place. If Ferry hadn't been the artist, I probably would have liked it alot less.
Ultimate Fantastic Four vol. 8: Devils TP--Liked it more than vol. 7. The writing was alot tighter, which is fortunate, because, unlike vol. 7, I have no love for the art on the Diablo issues. The annual was alot of fun. The Mole Man had me laughing more than once.

I found it funny that they purposely put the company on each page to mock the idea of product placement.

Finally found a copy of XIII Vol 1: Day of the Black Sun and read it the other day. Man, I hope Marvel/Dabel puts out at least another volume. Good espianoge/spy mystery with some great art. Just make me mad that it has a decent stopping piont, but the story goes on.
As for Ant-man #10, I didn't even realize the product placement was on every page, I only notice it in the stomach pages and was left to think, "Hmm why did the Hulk eat roll of Old Spice deoderant. that's kind of funny though." Matbe I'm so used to product placement in other places it doesn't even recognize in my mind any more.

Green Lantern Sinestro Corps Special & Green Lantern #21 - Surprisingly, I wasn't as wowed as I expected to be after the months long build up to this storyline.
Avengers Initiative #3 - Another good issue.
Star Wars Legacy #13 - Love the Colin Wilson art!
New Avengers #32 - Didn't like the coloring on the cover, although now that I read the story, it makes a little bit more sense. Continuing the Skrull storyline which I am starting to really get excited about.
New Warriors #2 - Enjoying it, although I'm a little worried about the focus on ex-mutants as the main characters so far.
Superpatriot: War on Terror #1~4 - Issue #4 finally shipped! Interesting to see a letter from Augie in the back of issue #2 stating "See you in 30!" - you meant 30 months, right? Anyways, still a fun Superpatriot story with some great art from EJ Su.

Read both trades of Wildcats 3.0. Damn, here's another title that I wish they would finish the story on. I may have to track down the rest of the issues to read how it ends or at least goes on. Strong art and really good story.
Also read the new Invincible trade, vol 8. Good stuff as always, a lot of action in this volume but also the good character moments.
For those of you reading Fables in trade, your in for a good read when the current story reaches the trade. "The Good Prince" is Fables at the top of it's game. It's also finding a way to connect with Jack of Fables in quiet but interesting ways. You don't have to read Jack of Fables to understand anything, but it makes for a nice extra layer on a few pages. The newest issue makes me want to reread the series from the start again.
I'd like to but the stack has too much on it already, and I bought a copy of "Reading Comics: How Graphic Novels Work and What They Mean!" yesterday, and between that and rereading Harry Potter and waiting for the new one, I'm in a prose reading mood. I may have burned out on comics for a few weeks. I still have a good chunk of books from Wednesday to read, most of my Marvel stack. I just need a little break I think.

Read:
Phonogram - Finally got around to finishing this up. Loved it! Totally looking forward to Jamie McKelvie's next book GLAMOR.
Invincible Vol 8 - Awesome stuff. Love the personal drama!
The Push Man & Other Stories - I'm sooo up for the next vol of this by creator Yoshihiro Tatsumi, "Abandon the Old in Tokyo." Amazing short tales of slices of life gone wrong. More David Lapham than anyone else I can think of, and it's 40+ years old!
Loveless Vol 2 - I didn't re-read the 1st one, but picked it up just fine. Good story! Need more Frusin art though.
BATMA & The Mad Monk - Good stuff! I think it was better than Wagner's 1st Bat-tale. This was extremely well done with some good HELL YEAH moments!
HELLSHOCK - Yes, I'm just reading this (can you tell I've been stacking this stuff up?). Ok, I liked it. I thought I'd get more of a story about the guy than the woman, but it was good. Weird ending, totally not what I was suspecting. I'd guess that Lee just wanted to put a cap on it. Nice intro and out-tro's. I'll have to compare art from the issues to this sometime soon.
Also read LONERS #4 (excellent), Tarot #45 (I think, great start to a new arc), and a few other issues I can't recall. I read another tpb by the pool on Friday too, but I'm spacing on it. Still high after seeing the TRANSFORMERS flick on Sat!

Through the magic of movie trailers on the big screen, I've gone from not giving a $@#t to really wanting to see this movie. I've seen the toys at Toys-R-Us and I'm wondering if the fact that they changed around the body types for some of the robots (I know it's all due to product licensing) will dampen my enthusiasm?

Damn - that Transformers trailer does look good, but god knows when it's coming to Old Blighty....
New Avengers v1: Breakout - This was an enjoyable enough read - though I doubt this series is going to hit the highs of Bendis's better work
Judge Dredd - The Complete Case Files v1 - I finally finished this book after a few months as my bathroom book. There are some sparks here and there, but really this is just the warm-up exercise for the classic Dredd stories.
Daredevil v1: Inside and Out v1 - Ed Brubaker continues to prove why he's one of the best damn writers in the business! Michael Lark does a great job too following on pretty seamlessly from Alex Maleev.
DMZ v2: Body of a Journalist - More good stuff. The art is nicely reminiscent of Eduardo Risso's stuff and Brian Wood does another bang-up job. It's hard to believe that this is from the guy who wrote the mediocre Channel Zero and Couscous Express
Batman: Face the Face - When James Robinson is on form he's one of the best, but this is pretty mediocre really. In a way it's impressive that between two pencillers and four inkers I never spotted any artistic change, but the end result was overly stiff and the story never really grabbed me.
The Coffin - This was okay in an amateur 80's indie comic kind of way, but the Phil Hester who wrote this is a novice compared with the one who wrote Firebreather. The art shows nice touches and quite a fluid line but it is way too cramped for my liking.

· MARTHA WASHINGTON DIES (ONE SHOT) - Ok, this started off cool and ended up as a bit of a letdown. I may have to look over the last MW tpb to see how that ended. Also, inside cover: COMPLETE MARTHA WASHINGTON HC IN 2008!
· AMAZING SPIDER-GIRL #10 - Nice. Something is off about this symobite tho.
· ANNIHILATION CONQUEST WRAITH #1 - NICE! I gotta know what this guy's deal is!!!
· DEADPOOL GLI SUMMER FUN SPECTACULAR - HA! This was awesome! Just what I expected it to be and more!
· NEW EXCALIBUR #21 - WTF? This is just a mess. Pacing was all off, story is kinda confusing as it is, and looking at the new solicits we're STILL gonna be in this tale 3 months from now. Ugh...
· NOVA #4 - YES! HELL YES!!! Ann. V2 is starting off well!
· SQUADRON SUPREME HYPERION VS NIGHTHAWK TP - Didn't expect a story this mired in real-world issues, but it was cool. The time separations didn't bug me at all. Now, I'm all caught up and need NEW SP tales!
· X-FACTOR #21 - Cool. Didn't get to the backup because I still need to read part 2.

Have a bunch of books sitting next to my bed now but only read 3 of them last night:
Dynamo 5 #5 - Another great issue, this has yet to disappoint. Loved the last page revelation!
Ultimate Spider-Man #111 - There was much sadness as I read the book and Bagley's farewell. I'll need a full issue or two from Immonen before I accept him completely.
Captain America #28 - I'm not sure if I was getting sleepy or what, but this book didn't bowl me over like the last couple. It was OK. I think that a re-read is in order.

Ultimate Spider-Man #111--I love that Bagley went out on one of the "talking" issues. Issues like Peter revealing his secret to MJ, and May talking to her therapist have been always been stand out favorites, so I'm much happier with his farewell pages being on them talking, and not Peter punching out the Rhino or something. I think Immonen will work out quite nicely, but I'm always going to miss Bagley.

I loved this series when it was coming out. I recommend tracking down the last twelve issues. The subplot with Wax and his boss's wife gets really scary. But I give you two warnings:
1.) Nguyen only stays on as penciller up to issue #16. Ruiz Velasco does some, Ferry does one, Rouleau the final five. So decide how much the art means to you, because it is going to be uneven at the end.
2.) Issue #24 was finished and "in the can" when Casey was told the series has been cancelled, so there is no ending. #24 finishes the story arc, but it still leaves you with a "I can't wait for #25" feeling.
I will always remember that series cancellation as one that hit me really hard. When something this good can't find enough of an audience to survive, then what the hell is the point? I totally get it if some people here read it and didn't think it was thier thing. That's cool and I respect that. But this series would have appealed to so many of the thriller and espionage novel readers, that it could have certainly held on, if not thrived. Only problem is that they clearly don't read comics because otherwise I wouldn't be making this mini-lament. :(

I think it's comparable to his other ones, yes. This one has more adult language in it, but the religious element is still there, the sense of humor is still strong, and his art is as good as ever. It's an insane mash-up of The X-Files, The Godfather, Sin City, Men In Black, and more.
I liked it quite a bit.

And finally read The Damned from Oni. If you're enjoying Criminal or other noir stories, you'lll enjoy this, although it does have some more fantastic elements, demons and such. Brian Hurtt's art is great, and the black and white really sets the mood of the story. I'd highly recommend it.

In anticpation of a big shipping week this week before SDCC, I read all of the books that I got at my LCS and the box that I received last week:
Fallen Son: Iron Man - Without a doubt, the best issue of the bunch. Cassaday's art was outstanding. I loved the layout of the funeral scenes (no dark black lines around any of the panels) with the combination of the muted colors from Laura Martin. The splash pages really jumped off the page.
World War Hulk #2 - Uh oh, I feel myself getting sucked into the crossover. Hulk kicking more @$$! Can't wait for the next issue.
Ms. Marvel #17 - Great issue with the introduction of a new villain for Carol Danvers.
Omega Flight #4 - I love mini-series where I don't have to be reading anything else to enjoy it. This is doing to trick for me.
Birds of Prey #108 - Nicola Scott knocked it out of the park with the 4 page splash! I know that Gail has got another (or is it 2) issue left, but this felt like it would have been the perfect point for her to end her run.
Danger Girl: Body Shots #4 - another fun issue, although the transition from the previous issue didn't work for me.
Catwoman #69 - Great issue as always! Car seat in the Batmobile? Brilliant!
Black Canary #1 - Enjoyed it a lot more than I anticipated. I have no idea who the villain revealed at the end of the book is though.
Thor #1 - Olivier Coipel's art is gorgeous, it's too bad that I really have never cared about the Thor character for as long as I've been reading comics.
All-Flash #1 - I love Wally West as the Flash, it's just too bad that I think Daniel Acuna is the wrong choice for artist of the book. Not sure I'm going to pick up the next issue.
Star Wars: Legacy #14
Star Wars: Dark Times #4 - Good stuff.

Exactly. This was a much better jumping off point for Bagley than the end of the Marvel Knights arc and I now understand why Bendis wanted him to stay on for this issue.
Bagley will be missed and I'm sure that Immonen will be very good. It's just one of those situations where an artist has been on the book for so long that I'm a little uneasy about the next person taking over the art chores. With creators jumping around these days, it's not a feeling that I experience much anymore. Through the years, I can only think of a handful of books where I got really bummed when an artist was stepping down: McFarlane off Amazing, Larsen off Amazing, McDaniel off Nightwing & Kolins off Flash. Are there any other books being published today where an art change would be a shock to the system? I can only think of Ryan Ottley and Invincible - I'm dreading the day if/when he moves on as he has become synonymous (sp?) with the book to me.

Batman (Dini) v1: Detective - A bit of a disappointment really. I don't think I've ever really got the Dini love. Batman TAS is good, but my favourite thing about it is the look that Bruce Timm gave it. Mad Love was merely okay for me and the couple of big oversized Alex Ross jobbies I've read were just terrible.
The Authority: The Magnificent Kevin - This was a good bit of fun, with a bit more of a serious side creeping in (as it often does with Ennis).
Shadowpact v1: The Pentacle Plot - Passable. How can this be written by the same guy who writes the excellent Fables?
The Horde (Baranko) - A little confusing and completely detached but with nice art - so like a lot of other European graphic novels I've read!
Secret Six v1: Six Degrees of Devastation - This was quite good. Simone handles the dynamic of a team made up of villains very well. I'm guessing this book isn't a comic code one.
God Save the Queen - I was a bit disappointed by this. There's a lot to like about John Bolton's art, but it can be so stiff that it feels like I'm reading a photo story. The story never really grabbed me.
Sentinel v3: Past Imperfect - This was a satisfying finish to the Sentinel story.

B.P.R.D. - Garden of Souls #1 ~ 5 - This book is so addictive! Self-trading rules! I was going to read an issue or two and then go to sleep...25 minutes later I had read the whole thing! Guy Davis' art has never looked better, Arcudi's story has never been more weird (or is that weirder?) and there were enough revelations about Abe's past to keep me happy. Very happy that the next arc begins next month.

Invincible #44 - Pink is an interesting choice for the color on the cover by Bill Crabtree. I know that I sound like a broken record but this was another great issue. Beautiful double page spread from Ottley with the sea monster attacking the cruise ship. More Mark/Eve complications. Excellent read! It was also good to see an ad for a FIREBREATHER ongoing series in 2008! I may have to start dropping superhero books from the big two soon.
The Walking Dead #39 - $hiT happens in this book - can't complain about that.
Fear Agent: The Last Goodbye #2 - Not nearly as good as the first issue. It's weird, I love this book but really didn't have much interest in reading this story. I'd prefer that we get back to the main story as soon as possible.

See, I had the exact opposite opinion about this issue. I didn't really like the first issue that much, but this one knocked my socks off. I loved the action in it, and even though it was bleak and dark it didn't make me depressed or anything, I had a good time with it. it reminded me of the first few issues of the series and why I still buy it.

Aren't comics great? Two people can read the same issue and get completely different reactions to it.

They are great that way, ain't they? It's like with the Buffy comic, every other reviews seems to enjoy the art, and I feel like I'm taking crazy pills because I just can't get into it. We get into arguements at the store because one of the young kids who works there worships at the alter of Michael Turner, but hates Frank Quietly. Differences in opinion are great as long as it doesn't devolve into gunfire or childish name calling.
p.s. You smell. :D

Picked up TenNapel's Black Cherry yesterday. You're right Augie, it was good. Kind of different from his other stories, yet still familiar. Now begins the long wait to next years book.
Also read Flight vol 4. Meh. It's an anthology so some of it was better than other ones. I don't think I liked it as much as the third volume. There were some decent ones though and most of it was well drawn.

Shadowpact v1: The Pentacle Plot - Passable. How can this be written by the same guy who writes the excellent Fables?
I read this at work last month and was left with the very same question on my mind. *shrug*

Superman: Emperor Joker - This was okay. Humour is a hard thing to pull off in comics, and unsurprisingly this book written by writers who aren't humour writers wasn't that funny. Overall it went on a bit too long. I like Kano's art though
Four Letter Worlds (bathroom book) - This was quite good - which is high praise indeed from me as I tend to find these short story anthologies unsatisfaying.
The Flash #13 - Okay. Nothing special.
All Flash #1 - Okay. Nothing special. It confirms that Carl Kershel (sp?) really needs to be the regular Flash artist
And my evil comic shop sold all of their copies of Martha Washington Saves the World without pulling one back for me even though I had it on order. :evilangry

I covered the Flight panel on Thursday. Honestly, the 1st volume didn't do anything for me and I want to sell it. But the other books at the panel were interesting.
Dan: Don't hunt to hard for the MW book. I was very dissappointed.
I enjoyed Shadowpact, and Willingham is starting a NEW book. Saw the pic at a DC panel on Friday. Sounds cool! And Bill is a funny guy...

I read quite a few things lately. A few of the WW Hulk books. Polished off the whole Warren Ellis book, "Crooked Little Vein" on the way home and LOVED IT!!!
Bought 303, the Ennis / Jacen Burroughs book from Avatar and read that. Color tpb from Avatar = cool! Jacen was there and not only signed it but sketched in it.
I bought that while waiting for Warren Ellis, who I was first in line for on Saturday morning. Got him to sign a few items, including a few Avatar books and a Transmet ish. ;)

The first volume of Flight didn't do anything for me either, but I'm 100 or so pages into volume 2 at the moment and it seems much better.
