Anybody ever read these? They were adapted into English in the late 90's and published by Dark Horse. Adam Warren of course did the covers.

The most solid one was ANH, which featured an interesting variation on Leia's 'buns'. Perhaps the highlight is the destruction of Alderaan-in the movie, it lasts ten seconds, here it lasts ten pages as we see things like the Alderaanian's reaction and Leia's tears that weren't in the film.

ESB had a slightly more cartoony style to it. ROTJ was a radical departure from the first two, with a generally darker look reminiscent of "Devilman".

"The Phantom Menace" was done by Kia Asamiya, who is perhaps well-known in America for his work on Batman and a short run on X-men.

Here's the Wiki page.

So far, there haven't been any mangas of Attack Of The Clones and Revenge OF The Sith. Perhaps the TPM sales were low in Japan?

Some American Star Wars comics have also featured some manga stylings, most notably Jedi:Yoda.

I have Volume 1 of A New Hope.

It really didn't do much for me . . . . and I was a little disappointed.

Not sure what I was expecting.

Too bad we got stuck with the Adam Warren covers. I like the guy, but why replace the original covers?

I would love to at least SEE those covers someday. The covers we got on the translated versions were....not nice.... to put it politely.

As for Episodes II and III, I'm not sure if a manga adaptation of those movies was ever made. If it was, then the Dark Horse publishing schedule probably hasn't had any space for their translations yet. From what I have heard they are being pretty strict about how many Star Wars comics are released in a given month right now in order to keep the quality at the level that (most) fans expect.

Oh, and mgs, The Clone Wars adventures are neither manga nor prequel adaptations. They're OEL comics done by Dark Horse in the artistic style of Gennedy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars series. And like his cartoons, they're considered to exist in their own personal realm of continuity (for those that pay attention to such things). Mainly because the Clone Wars cartoon went and actively contradicted some of the stuff in the novels and no one except the fans noticed until it was too late.

Here you are!

I think one reason they made new covers is because each movie was originally 2 issues (whose covers fit together, as you can see), not 4 like the US versions. It would have been very jarring to go from these masterpieces to ordinary covers. Also, it's possible that they couldn't get the rights to these paintings for some reason? They were all done by the same artist, Noriyoshi Ohrai, and perhaps he retained his rights to them. Whatever the case, I love them!

Slightly off-topic but still on-topic... has anyone heard of a Star Wars doujinshi manga made by Clamp before they started to get famous? I think Leia had green hair, and Darth Vader had a mask like the patriarch from Saint Seiya.

Yeah, but that's one of many Star Wars comics. The Star Wars manga is actual manga, first published in Japan.

Did you just say OEL comics? Yeahbutwha? Ha. First time I've heard that. I know this is the internet, world wide web and all, but it is a US comics forum. Still I would think you could say comics and the default language would be English.

Again, this is just me being Mr English professor and trying to keep proper terminology. Now I know how my high school teachers felt every time that Alanis Morrisette song came on the radio.

There's also been some great Japanese covers for the Star Wars novels, specfically the NJO and Prequels .

Regarding the Clone Wars digests, they're OK but not on the level of the animation itself. They are *very* simple stories, and nowhere near the level of John Ostrander/Jan Duuresama's Clone Wars stuff in Republic.

Heh, I remember that manga...
Not bad, but, well, I'd seen the movies several times before, so...

In Canada, some comics (especially those from Quebec and other francophone areas of the country) are published initially in French. But yeah, the OEL was probably overkill :)
