Excluding the symbiotes (yes that includes both Carnage and Venom), who is your favorite Spider-man Villian and why?
Mine would be the Green Goblin (Harry Osborn). I think besides Venom, Harry has the most interesting story and background. I mean his father is arguablly the gretest and most recognized non-symbiote enemy of Spider-man and for Harry to betray his best friend and take up where his father left off definitely makes things not only personal but very interesting and memorable as well.
So who is you favorite non-symbiote villian and why?

My favorite always has been and always will be the original Green Goblin. Perfect nemesis to the perfect superhero.

Electro,i think he is clearly underused and badly written!
The way that Mark Millar wrote him was awsome and his outfit was way better that his classic!
If someone explored him well and use his powers the right way he has the potential of becoming an even bigger threat to Spidey
The Green Goblin, Norman.

I love Norman Goblin but, I think....
Mysterio! Because villains with capes ALWAYS rock and who doesn't dig the fishbowl? No seriously, I love 'im.

Why not ask favorite non-symbiote/ Goblin villain, given how they dominate Top ten lists?
Granted my favorite villain's the Lizard.
From my Top 15 characters thread.
Doctor Curt Connors/ The Lizard

For starters, the Lizard's abilities (control over reptiles/ strength/ speed/ ability to breathe underwater/ wall-scaling) are pretty cool, and he represents something impressive in Spider-Man's pantheon, as an animal based villain so far gone that he's forgotten that he's human.
Then there's the man underneath the disguise, Curt Connors- a brilliant scientist who thought he had found the breakthrough in limb regeneration, and tested the serum on himself, because he didn't want to risk the life of anyone else. Curt Connors has become an effective ally to Spider-man, when he's not going nuts and trying to start a reptile rebellion.
The fusion of enemy/ decent man creates a weird tension, when Spider-Man can't fight all out against the Lizard, because he knows about the good man underneath. This type of villain has become its own archtype with Vermin, Man-Wolf, Morbius, the Batman foe Man-Bat, and many more.
Recommended Reading:
Ultimate Marvel Team Up #10: A great retelling of the Lizard's origin, which may just represent the perfect origin for a villain, and define the old "Road to hell" maxim.
Amazing Spider-Man #32-33: Perfect example of Connors trying to repay the debt he owes Spidey.
Spider-Man Blue #2-3: When Curt Connors exposes himself to the materials which made him into the Lizard to help Spider-Man stop the Rhino, and admits what he's doing, it's a great moment.
Amazing Spider-Man #73-77: In addition to dealing with the Lizard, Spider-Man's gotta stop the Human Torch from killing him.
Amazing Spider-Man #101-102: Just a chaotic situation as Spider-man finds himself needing Lizard's help against Morbius.
Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man #127: A B-list crime figure abducts Connors' family, and he's forced to fight without Spider-Man's help. My favorite Lizard tale.
Spider-Man #1-5: Macfarlane's art is gorgeous, and no one's drawn the Lizard better. This storyline reinvents the Lizard as a scary brainwashed monster (the Hulk with claws), and strangely plays to Macfarlane's weaknesses as a writer.
Exiles #17: This alternate history tale looks at a world in which the Lizard has won, and made millions of people like him.
Sensational Spider-Man #23-27: Just for ignoring "Lizard's Tale" and feauting Billy Connors as Little Lizard.
Spider-Man 4: Please, Marvel? I'll be nice. Wouldn't a Kraven's Last Hunt adaptation with Lizard in Vermin's role just be perfect? Hell, I'll accept waiting until Spider-Man 5 to see Lizard, with the fourth movie showing Kraven's downfall.

LOL sorry bout that. I honestly didn't know alot of people here liked the goblins. I excluded the symbiotes simply because I didn't want this to turn into a Venom love fest (which don't get me wrong hes my favorite too). I just wanted to see what alot of other Spidey fans thought about their favorite Spider-man villians.

For me, its always been the Lizard. As a kid, I liked his look, and the fact that he didn't have a costume-- just a tattered lab coat, and pants he'd borrowed from Bruce Banner.
As I got older, I appreciated the Jeckyl/Hyde aspects of the character more: the fact that we all retain that reptile brain deep down, and just how vicious that part of us can be if unleashed.

Probably Electro. When he's used right, he's awesome. He's probably the ultimate example of a second-rater trying desperately to make a name for himself but never succeeding, something we've all related to at one time or another.
and pants he'd borrowed from Bruce Banner.
I knew i had seen them before!

There was a time a few years ago, where I really liked the Chameleon. He escaped Ravencroft disguised as Ashley Kafka, found out Peter Parker was Spider-man and drugged him/brainwashed him into thinking he was crazy.
I thought that was really cool, but then he got beat up by Mary Jane... kinda took him down a peg :p
Around the same time the Jack O'Lantern was being introduced and he seemed cool. Never got to see where that went... Excuse me while I wiki.

Hands down, the shocker. I really like the character and think that he is a great villain. Its just too bad that he just gets beaten down all of the time. I think that he could step up to be a major threat with some good writing and a few character improvements.

The Hobgoblin. My introduction to Spidey was during the Roger Stern run of Amazing Spider-Man, about 8 months before the "Who is the Hobgoblin?" mystery arc got started. Hobby became easily my favorite comic-book villain at the time, since I loved how sneaky and manipulative he was compared to the other villains who would get into one-issue fights with Spidey and then go directly to jail. But in addition to being shrewd and smart, Hobby also had the power and skills to go toe-to-toe with Spidey and was one of his most physically formidable foes. I loved his lengthy reign of terror as Spidey's #1 nemesis, then I suffered through the nonsensical Ned Leeds reveal, the Macendale years (shudder), and Norman Osborn returning and stealing Hobby's MO as a calculating manipulator (the original GG was certainly crafty, but a he was a lunatic, not a patient mastermind). Then finally I reveled in Roger Stern returning in "Hobgoblin Lives" to set things right, kill off Macendale, and reveal that the original Hobby was Roderick Kingsley. I'd like to see Hobby return under a good writer, but frankly I love the fact that he "got away with it" and is currently happily retired and vacationing in the Bahamas, as opposed to being dead or in jail.
Runners up:
Doctor Octopus
Harry Osborn/Green Goblin II

Yeah, Doc Ock is also a favorite of mine. As for the Hobgoblin, I like Ultimate Hobgoblin better than 616 Hobgoblin.

Definitely the Hobgoblin. The only thing the Green Goblin (Norman) has over this evil bastard is that Norman knows Pete's identity... but I guess that's not a factor anymore...
Shocker is a close second. He's the best B-lister ever.

Well, my first choice is the original Green Goblin (obviously) but I've got a lot of time for Mac Gargan/The Scorpion too.
His origin issue (ASM #20) is an absolute classic and I love the way the Scorpion's costume has evolved over the years...up to and including his current guise as Venom.

Same here...but since I can't I'm going to have to go with Mysterio or Doc Ock.
I can't choose between them..even though I know in the dark recesses of my mind I'm secretly leaning on Mysterio.

Those are dark recesses indeed. I think it's pretty clear Mysterio is Spidey's twelfth best villain, though I can see the case for being #11...
