I've been reading old threads from last year and a few posts comment on Xavier having feelings for Magneto.

Is there any truth to this or was it a joke?

Nah. He's attracted to Jean Grey

It's mostly a joke as far as I know, although at least one story's implied that their bond goes beyond friendship.

Can't remember which setting it was, but the story flashbacked to Xavier neglecting his family to meet with Magneto, ostensibly to discuss and plan for the forming of the team that would eventually become the X-Men. The imagery though, with a worried wife looking at her husband walk outside eagerly to drive off with another man, was somewhat open to interpretation. The narration implied that it was obsession.

Then again, I'm probably just remembering it that way.

Add to that the gay perspective around the X-Men movies (Brian Singer and Sir Ian are gay, Patrick Stewart has been rumored to be gay, the plots for the second and third film had heavy gay rights undertones), and you'll understand where the discussion originates.

I haven't heard of this argument...

I think it's a combination of people reading flashbacks in the third Ultimate X-Men story differently than I did, and Ian McKellan saying it would be fun to have a love scene between Magneto & Mystique, where Mystique poses as Professor X.

It always makes me laugh when I see threads like this. I'm just waiting for some insecure homphobe to start ranting and raving. Heh. But no, Mags and Xavier aren't gay. Xavier was involved with Mystique, Emma Frost AND Moira Mctaggart and was in love with Jean Grey. He really has a thing for younger women. Which is...slightly disturbing, given that he runs a school. At least he's not a gym teacher. Or a janitor. (Silent Hill ref)
And Mags seems to be involved with Mystique (She calls him "My love" and he seems very happy to see her. NOT THAT WAY. Minds outta the gutter) Plus Mags has two kids as the result of a passionate relationship with a human woman.
So no, they aren't gay. But that won't stop crazed fangirls (Like myself) writing slash about them. But then, NOTHING can stop a crazed fnagirl from writing slash, short of hand amputation, and even then we'll learn to type with our feet.

Well, Magneto is pretty hot in the Ultimate universe, and after spending all that time together, alone, in the Savage Land who's to say what could have happened between them ;)

Couldn't Magneto cause Charles' heart to race every time the two met? Sounds like Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane will soon see company in Professor X Loves Magneto. :D

If Magneto was dressed in that Tarzan look as in those old Jim Lee stories...who would know?

Being sexually attracted to women in no way precludes being sexually attracted to men and vice-versa. They're both enlightened, open-minded fellows. They could easily swing both ways. They could have even had a Sacred Band of Thebes thing going on between them before their big falling out.

I remember watching the first X-Men movie, there's the scene where Wolverine asks "What's a Magneto?" and Prof. X replies "A very powerful mutant" in a drawn-out nasal tone that can be misconstrued any number of ways. Anyways, theatre's totally quiet, and then some guy blurts out "He's totally gay for Magneto!" that has the place giggling (apparently, it was full of thirteen year-olds)

Is it bad that, upon telling of that story, I giggled near the end.

I wish I could blurt out " He's so gay for Magneto " in a crowded place.

Thank you, I take that as a compliment.

Fair point. The fan community seems to agree with you. Personally I feel that in the comics continuity they were friends, nothing more. But the minute you get into fandom, anything goes. I mean if TOAD can have slash written about him, why not Xavier and Magneto. (Seriously, Toad? Have to be a VERY desperate guy).

And I'll admit, that scene with Moira watching as her husband runs off into the night with another man makes me giggle everytime I read it now, thanks to this thread. And Magneto's rage at Xavier in the first arc of "Return of the King" during the Flashback DOES kind of look like a spurned lover (I've had plenty of experience there). Especially when he says "Do you think I haven't noticed you've stopped mentiuoning me?" when talking about Xavier's talks with the humans.
