Hi all. Just getting back into comics, looking into past trades and arcs...
Can anyone reflect on the Secret War mini? Prolfic writer, painted artwork, usual cast of do-gooders (isn't this the first unofficial gathering of the New Avengers, before Breakout: Cap, Spidey, Wolverine, Cage, DD - he was on the Raft)? Thanks in advance for your insights.

It was pretty good; great artwork. Was a pain reading it one issue at a time though. Buying the TPB is the way to go.

I liked it. Good re-read value too.

What were the main plot points of the story?
I'm pretty curious about this one too, but hesitant to order the TPB...

Without getting too spoilery...
Nick Fury decides to assemble a secret team of heroes to Invade and take down Dr. Dooms country Latveria. Things go wrong, Fury tries to cover it up, and that eventually comes back to Haunt Fury.
It's really a big set up for a lot of what Bendis ended up in New Avengers with SHIELD.

I liked it a lot! Also had the introduction of Daisy Johnson who seems to have big things planned for her in Bendisville.
Also, I think the whole Skrull thing is said to go as far back as this. So it can't hurt to read it. I thought it was fun and light reading! Definitely pick it up in trade or all the issues at once since I hear the wait was a loooong time.

They've said Skrullish behavior goes back that far? I thought Bendis only specificaly stated as far back as New Avengers 1? I'm gonna have to check that out...
Ah, but about Secret War, it's like someone else said, it's probably good in trade. There were ridiculous delays between issues that turned a lot of people off when it first came out (I'm guessing the delays were due to the artist, I really don't remember?) because it created a continuity **** due to the supposed chronology. Reading it in retrospect you can just enjoy it for being a fairly good story without worrying how it fits.

i didn't like it really... it's hard to remember just exactly why, now.
I know the ending seemed week to me. just too many things coming together that raised my eyebrow... i don't know how i was supposed to suspend all that disbelief. Also, the big reveal about the nature of the heroes involvement was kind of transparent, and without the drama of that set piece, its just a couple of generic superhero fights.
Good characterisation of the leads, though.

The art was the only thing good about that series. The rest was forgettable, IMO.
