Zeck was always a Marvel guy when I was into comic books (84-93). I've been out of it for a while and only the last 6 months have I gotten back in a bit. What's Zeck doing now and what has he done recently?

According to his website (http://www.mikezeck.com/), he's doing a lot of animation and licensing work these days.

I'd like to see another comic drawn by Mike Zeck. ;)

1986 Mike Zeck, maybe. If his output in the 90s is indicative of his current stuff, not so much. He's one of those artists who was just frickin' amazing at one point, and then had a severe drop off in quality at a certain point of time.

His work on the Punisher mini series is what drew( ha, a play on words!) back into comics!

Hmmm... I wasn't reading comics startting in 93 or so. Guess I missed his crud phase. it's hard to believe someone so utterly talented would drop off like that.

It happens. His stuff pops up from time to time. It seems like he can still do the occasional single piece and have it look good, but his sequential stuff has lost the touch.

Refresh my memory- what are some examples of Zeck's work from the 90s? I, too, loved his 80s work (the Cap annual with Wolverine was awesome, and I really enjoyed his Cap work in general.)

Might his artwork in the 90s have had something to do with whoever was inking him? I stopped reading comics for a couple of years at the latter half of the 90s, and part of that was the horrid "Liefeld-esque" artwork that was coming out- bright ugly colors, bad anatomy. To my surprise, going back and looking at some of it, there were some artists whose work I really admire, but their books looked horrible, and I suspect something may have gotten lost between pencils and finished product. Maybe they were only doing breakdowns, or were just not doing their best work, but I'm suspicious.

(A notable example that comes to mind is Leonardo Manco's Hulk work. Really bad stuff, and that guy does some amazing work, especially when he draws and inks himself.)

[EDIT- Just checked out his gallery. He seems to have gotten a bit more "cartoony" since I last remember seeing his work. Some of the pieces look like they are a bit busier than I remember- his early stuff (especially Cap) seemed pretty minimalist in terms of lines, and that is one of the things I always liked about it.]

Mcfarlane pretty much ruined comic books, in my opinion. He caused a real craze for F'd up looking art, where nothing was real. It was all style. On top of that he helped create the speculative market, by acident, yes, which ultimately put silver bullets into the hobby, almost killing it for good.

It's quite possible Zeck 'Mcfarlaned' his work to keep getting gigs. It was amazing how many Liefeld, Larson and Mcfarlane clones there were working for Marvel in the 90's. it's all Marvel wanted. It's one reason I stopped reading comic books back at that time.

By the way, I think Mcfarlane is a talented guy, so please understand that I am not bashing him personally. Just giving my take on history. :)

He didn't do a ton, but he popped up here and there. I think he did the Siryn mini for the Ultraverse. And a few other books, but nothing overly memorable.
