The one with the two TPBs, "House of Cards" and "Hath No Fury". Were they any good? I hate to make a thread to ask, but I have the chance to buy both TPBS at a good price since theyre rare and dont want to blow my money on something pointless.

They were good enough. Not stellar, but if you're a Gambit fan, you'll enjoy it. The 25 issue solo by Nicieza was wayyy better IMHO

Yeah you're right. I didn't really like Layman work on Gambit, I think it was pretty bad.

what's the big difference? the art/story/etc is better with Niciez Vs layman?

i can't remember who wrote it, but the ones with Steve Skroce on art rocked.
what happened to Skroce anyway?

I'd say Nicieza was better on all fronts. His stories had depth, pacing, nuance, sub-plots, in-jokes, and quality humor. Layman's style was more suited to a humorous mini than an ongoing and his style of humor was more suited to someone like Spider-man than Gambit IMO.

For some reason when I think about Layman's work on Gambit I think of Marvel Adventures.

that was gambit (3rd series), written by nicieza.
skroce went on to do a wolverine (2nd series) arc during revolution and later left comics to work on movie stuff. he worked on the matrix films, i believe.

I actually just got the 25 issue run by Nicieza and the 12 issue run by Layman today, so i'll be chiming in soon with my opinions on both. I'm really looking forward to reading Nicieza's run though, he's an awesome writer and Gambit is one of the coolest x-characters.
oh,and i'd read marvel adventures Gambit. Marvels adventures stuff rocks.

Layman's story-crafting was somewhat lacking at first. The later stuff was better. Especially the issue where he babysits some of the kids at the mansion. That one was his best issue.
Fabian's 24-issue arc was really good stuff until the end, when he was forced off the book and had to wrap up his storyline before he wanted. Gads, Marvel was run by jerks. They yanked him off the book to put Scott Lobdell on it and then cancel the book after only one issue with Lobdell. The art stinks after Skroce leaves the book, so don't get your hopes up for great art.
