View Full Version : Who Should get the next big break?

This year there were some fantastic folks that skyrocketed into the spotlight
Warpath, Darwin, Layla Miller, Rogue, and X-23 all had good years. Each went from the non-existence/creative doldrums or worse Limbo onto the mainstage.
so who is this years? I left big bads off the list, the baddys I listed could are more grey. Feel free to vote other but if so, tell me who and Why!?!
1. Frenzy
2. Leech
3. Hepzibah
4. Random
5. Caliban
6. Gambit
7. Agent Brand
8. Vincente!
9. Strong Guy
10. Other

Gambit.
The fact that Carey will be writing plays a large part into this. Hopefully he can clear up some of the crap from his last stint.

Initially I was going to vote for Vincente, but i figured there was no way in hell that was going to happen, sadly, so instead i voted other.
And my other is Karma. That girl seriously needs to be stepped up to the big leagues. She's insanely powerful, mature, responsible, a good person, and seriously lacking in development for the last, oh, twenty odd years.
I would love for her to take an active membership in an X-Team, probably X-Factor, and get back to being a moral voice in the lives of the X-Men.
I might add that I would love it if she were back to her possessing one person at a time since possessing herds of people at a time and placing entire crowds in a "telepathic suggestive state" kinda waters her down and makes her less unique. Besides, she's already a power player in that respect, any more powerful and she would be a hard character to write.

yay for at least thinking of a vote for Vincente. I had Karma listed! But bumpd her fro Strong Guy, since I hadn't represented anybody from X-factor.
I would love to see Shan get her day in the sun! Her and Skids too!

I went for Gambit, but that's more me being hopeful. Don't care for any of the others on the list.

Frenzy! I think it should be a good time for old school villain teams from the 80's and 90's, and I believe Carey has said the Marauders won't be the last. And homegirl has been in like three different ones--two rather major groups.
I think Caliban getting back to his lanky weird self should prove to be a good move. That aside, him connecting with the Morlocks again and potentially joining the X-Men should be interesting.
All we need is Risque (I couldn't resist either!).
And a shout out to Vincente, who I vote for not only because Jack Flash is love and I think he's pretty cool myself, but I think he'd be a very scary veelan (oh Heroes, I'm even missing Hiro!).
EDIT: HOWEEEVER, 'Other' is quite tempting since I'm waiting on a couple of personal favorites to make it to the big leagues (continuity reference!).
Irving Forbush deserves to get his big break.

I'd rather they used Magma again. She turns up for 198 and isn't seen again after it finished. :(

Thank you Mike Carey. It's a good time to be a Beast fan. :D

I am with Faded on the Frenzy vote, being one of the only Acolytes left and also working for Sinister now, I think she will have a good year... I don't know if she will be up to the level that Warpath achieved this year, but she has potential...
I also share the hope that Magma gets a boost, but only if we see Empath right behind her.

Frenzy. Enough of this villains-gone-good such as Juggernaut, Mystique, or Sabretooth. A believable character would be Frenzy, as she has always had conflicted emotions towards the X-Men. Not to mention, she's worked with all of the major X-Men baddies -- Apocalypse, Magneto, and now Mr. Sinister. If she doesn't make it onto the X-Men team, at least let her play the role that she deserves, a high-ranking Acolyte of Magneto's. To me, right next to Exodus should be her. She's stuck by Magneto's side throughout the entire 90's and he even thought so much of her to appoint her ambassador of Genosha. I was disappointed in House of M that characters like Pyro or Unus had high-ranking positions, when they never really meant much to Magneto over the years. Writers need to realize how important Frenzy is!
It's looking to be like Gambit's year, though. Hepzibah is also getting some good spotlight. Random, however, can rot in Heck.

Gambit. It's about time they made him popular again.
I also believe that Axel Alonso has big plans for Forge and Bishop (and Cable if he makes it out of X-men #200 alive), so they may be due for a return to prominence again soon too.

Irving Forbush (aka Forbush Man) is the parody super-hero for Not Brand Echh! & What The...?!?, comics that make jokes about the Marvel Universe.

Gambit because there are decent writers on the X-men now who might have a chance of redeeming him and making him cool again.

Nightcrawler, dammit. It's time to take him out of the role as preachy wallpaper and actually DO something with him. Give him a place, give him a purpose, give him a personality, give him charm and heart. Make him useful, please. That, or write him out of the books. In his current incarnation, he's just a waste of ink.

Out of the characters listed, Leech is my favourite, although his relevance has been hurt by Decimation. He still provided one of the best moments of Civil War: X-Men.
Out of anyone, i've been long awaiting a status update on Mimic. Original 6 FTW. :D

Here, here...cheers to that idea
reinstate him with the purpose, poise & personality much like he used to have in the books. I'd go for him on a Carey team.
I'd like to see the "big break" of a classic character (much like this year's Rogue) or the "big break" or a minor character (such as this year's Layla Miller or Lady Mastermind). For the classic character Nightcrawler is premium. He used to be a big fan favorite of mine, but the preist/religion stuff of latter years has been dry. Longshot is also overdue for a pimpin' out...doesn't have to be major, but some progress & quality would be killer.
Now, as for the minor I'm not sure as there's so many various rotues to go with that one...may be someone from Alpha Flight vol. two or someone without much backstory & weight, like an Acolyte.

Karma was left off the list, but we got lame-o Random on it instead?
Whatevs! LOL. Anyway, since Angel is FINALLY getting some development after being left in limbo since Genoshalibur was cancelled, I would have to say Karma. Of all the New Mutants, she's the one left in limbo the most and she has TONS of potential. As the first asian lesbian in comics(pre-dating even Yukio if you can believe it!) she has a painful origin, involving a wartorn home, being raped, and beaten repeatedly, and forced to kill her own twin, and has the responsibility of taking care of her two young twin siblings. She has strong morals, and was a FABULOUS PHAT FAT GIRL!!!! What more could you ask from a character?

I’m going with Gambit. Carey has said that there are plans for him this year and next. We already know that he plays a big part in the crossover. Plus Carey has said that the Gambit heritage thing from the BOA storyline would probably be told next year.

I voted for Agent Brand because I just love her. I think she's a great foil, and I would love to see her interact with the wider Marvel Universe, especially the Fantastic Four. I imagine her interactions with those six would be priceless.
I'd also really like to see Northstar come back in a big way. That would make me happy.

Beast - I am now worshipping you from afar for this quote!! Someone needs to give Jubes a great big push & I would love it to be Juggernaut ;)
Karma & Magma need to be back in the spotlight, it's criminal how they are not used especially given their excellent powers.
I would like to say Skids as well but sadly I cannot. This is due to the fact that I have ALWAYS hated her codename, as its British slang for sh** stains on your under garments! I just can't support a character who's name is based on a careless accident when you don't wipe yourself properly.......Sorry.

I realize this may sound trite, but does anyone remember the 4-part "At Dreams End" or something that occurred around Uncanny X-men #392 or so? It was right after Colossus died... technically.... and all the mutants on Genosha who were dying from the Legacy Virus suddenly got better. It was one of those stories where a misfit band of mutants had to come together and be makeshift X-Men.
First off, regarding that, Frenzy became a good guy during that story and was shown with some redemption in her. So why is she all of a sudden going back to being a terrorist? I mean, yeah, I guess you can throw the "her species is going extinct" card and say that any character change is now thrown out the window here... but again, not that big a deal, she's just a fictional character.
Second, I'm sure all the other characters were depowered during the editorial clean-up that was HoM, but I'd actually be interested in seeing some of those throw-away characters again. They were surprisingly 3-Dimensional despite only having been in, like, 4 issues and are generally untapped potential.
Oh yeah, and I vote for Sunspot.

With Claremont's London Hellfire Club plans for New excalibur now looking all the more likely never to come to fruition maybe it is time we saw Sunspot back in the books, away from the HFC.

Claremont should bring back Damask for his Hellfire club arc. For SERIOUS! She was fantastic in AOA and really should be a Big Bad in her own right!

Damask - better knwn as Ms Steed of the London Hellfire Club. She has credentials. Interestingly enough I seem to remember Chris Claremont asking about her over at Comixfan's forums before New Excalibur launched. She was a good character concept, but we didn't get to see a lot of her.

Yes. Both characters were created and written by Warren Ellis on X-Calibre during AoA and Excalibur afterwards. She has not been seen since Excalibur #100, but was in contact with Onslaught during that time. How and why was never totally revealed.

at least your character was featured in the 198 files. it was never confirmed whether Shortpack was depowered (preferably) or powered. they just plain ignored him. and the recent Mystique stuff makes it even more likely that he was just erased. oh well, i don't care that much. just mildly irked since i enjoyed the Tsunami series.
