One of my all time favorite albums. Any other fans out there. Sticks close to the book, beautifully narrated by Richard Burton and featuring Phil Lynott, David Essex, Justin Hayward and Julie Covington. Amazing production, fantastic tunes and melodies. Great art package too.
I saw the live show recently, which was just overwhelming with it's sound and imagery.
It's an album I go back to again and again. At the heart is a great story, the first alien invasion story ever.
What really works is that Jeff Wayne didn't update it as the Movies and Radio Plays have and kept it in Victorian England, which adds to the charm of the piece.
So many stand out bits: the Ullas of the Martians and how they change character over the album, until it's the wailing death knell, as they are consumed by bacteria. The Unscrewing of the Cylinder and the description of the Heat-ray. The exodus of London. The Cylinder on the house and the description of the Martians feeding. Dead London and the passing of the Martians.
David Essex's high notes and camp acting style. Phil Lynott playing a mad Parson. It's so unique a complete one off.
Such an incredible album.
