View Full Version : Wolverine the movie costume

Any chance they are going to ditch the lame costume from the X-Men movies and do a real Wolverine costume. The colors would look hokey but think an all black wolverine costume and the part that comes off the mask being more streamlined.

Doubtful. Honestly, what works in the comics does not work well on screen.

I have to disagree I have the costume in my head so its hard to explain but think Batman Begins costume and turn it into a wolverine costume except you have to keep the part of wolverines mask that flares off shorter and tighter to the mask so it does not flail around while he is moving

Why does he need a mask, though? He doesn't have a secret identity. I wouldn't mind seeing something with short sleeves that's a bit more spandexy (like his Ultimate costume), but definitely not any version of his regular Marvel Universe costume with the shoulder pads and mask.

rw would you have SEX with Wolverine?

I already have. Many, many times. I altered a sex doll to look like him and I make love to it nightly...
...BUT...
...I always finish on my customized Dazzler sex doll! Always.;)
EDIT---Seriously, though, I like the character, but you'll notice how many of the threads about him are actually created by me, right? But, yeah, if I see a thread with Wolverine in the title I feel compelled to click on it. Sorry, but I just find it more interesting than the endless "Dazzler looks like Kylie Minogue" or "Bring back Cecelia Reyes" threads. And unlike some people around here, I try to stick to threads about characters or titles that I like as opposed to going into ones about things I don't like just so I can let everyone there know how much I don't like them. Maybe that's weird, I don't know...

Here are the facts:
1) Leather works better on film than spandex for anything other than a truly iconic costume like, say, Superman's outfit or Spider-Man's costume (and even having said that the materials that they've used for those costumes in the new Superman and the three Spidey movies aren't exactly spandex), unless you really do want your superheroes to look like escapees from a Richard Simmons video.
2) Wolverine's comic mask would look pretty dopey in real life. Batman's mask works in real life because it can be rationalised as a functional piece of hardware (body armour for his head), but Wolverine's mask is just decorative, like the tail feathers of a peacock.
3) Cosplay participants have already proved that comic costumes don't work in real life.

Wolverine should have a secret identity, like all the X men should, if they wanted to really make sense, it is a comic though. Because he has a lot of enemies and he should try to keep them from knowing where he sleeps. Though I do like the movie costume. Should have gotten a shorter actor than Hugh Jackman though.

I really don't think the height thing is a big deal. After all, it's not the fact that Wolverine is really short that makes him so wolverine-like, rather it's the fact that most of the people he fights are so much larger. So it's all relative really. At least IMO. And Sabretooth in the first movie was like 7 feet tall, so I think it worked just fine.
Plus, making him really short and hairy and keeping him 100% true to the comic character would've hurt Logan's sex appeal in the film, which was a pretty strong selling point for the ladies. Besides, the Ultimate verison of Wolverine is around 6', and he doesn't strike me as any less "Wolverine" because of it. I think Mark Millar was actually trying to make him more similar to the movie character when he created him.
So Hugh Jackman's height didn't bother me one bit. Then again, I'm not a short guy myself, so his height really has nothing to do with my interest in the character. It's more about his personality and attitude for me.

Except for the fact that all of them ALREADY KNOW where he and the X-men sleep. It's pointless to have a secret identity when Magneto, Sinister, Apocalypse, The Shadow King, Cassandra Nova, the Sentinels, the Marauders, etc, all know who you are and where you live. Plus the X-men should be the face of mutantkind, keep hiding is not a good idea, and that was the main reason why they failed in get the acceptance of the public until the Morrison era.

Yeah I know it is just a comic, but movies should be a bit more realistic maybe, I mean if Magneto knew where you lived and wanted you dead you'd be dead just like that.

And I like the movie costume more than his homoerotic comics costume that a guy who is supposed to be the ultimate bad ass would never wear.

I think he rather liked it. ;)

Well, like I said, something similar to his Ultimate costume could work on the big screen:
http://image.comicvine.com/uploads/item/2000/1440/98402-wolverine_150.jpg OR http://www.comictreadmill.com/images/ultx2.jpg
But I just don't see anything with a mask working for the character in a live action film.
In the comics, though, I'd love to see him in a brown and tan version of his current costume like so (but without the shoulder pads):
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/4069/wolverine05scaled600ql3.jpg
And wouldn't it be great if the catalyst for this costume change was Logan's healing factor going back down to more reasonable levels? Thus he'd need the darker colors to be more stealthy.

You are a weird dude, Mikl. Why so interested? I'm not really sure if my Wolverine fanatacism is any more hardcore than Hi-Fi's with Rogue or Nyssane's with Anaconda or Frenzy, but it certainly seems to have piqued your interest now, hasn't it? I wonder why.
And to answer your question, I did dress up as Wolverine once in college for a frat party. I wore the yellow spandex outfit as a gag. It was pretty funny since it really didn't fit me all that well (I'm a 6'1", 230lb. ex-football player, so I was basically busting out of it). Had to wear a cup too, because it was pretty much obscene without it. Got too drunk and ended up with a bunch of rips in it somehow, so I had to throw it away. It was very cheaply made anyway, though.
Happy now?

Well, anyway, How bout that movie costume on Wolverine, eh? Wowzers.
I don't think a more comic-y version of it would be impossible. And i think there are reasons to have a mask, despite having no secret identity.

Hahaha. I wasn't being touchy (at least, I didn't mean to come across that way). Just curious since Mikl seems to ask me very random questions sometimes (such as whether I would make love to Wolverine or if I have a Wolverine costume). I get the feeling that he's f'n with me...
...not that I really mind. I don't shy away from my rabid Wolvy love. My wife, siblings, friends, etc., all know of my obsession with the character. Even my baby girl will know, once she's old enough (she's only 2 months old). On that note, do you think it would be odd to decorate a little girl's room with Wolverine wallpaper?;)
Seriously, though, having said all that, I am much less infatuated with the character than I was back in high school and college. My lucky shirt for football games was a white T-shirt with Wolverine leaping out on the front of it, for Pete's sake! But I guess that's what happens as you get older. I'm 29 now, and honestly a little surprised that I'm still reading comics at all. But they still entertain me, money's not an issue, and my wife likes them too. So why not?
I'm sure I come across as a lunatic on these boards, but I'm really not. Like I said, I just stick to threads that interest me, and most of those happen to be about either Wolverine, Astonishing, Uncanny or adjectiveless X-men. Maybe I shouldn't post so often, but I like to come here when I'm bored...especially at work.

Cool. Glad to know. Unfortunately I don't have any pics from that night, as it was a looong time ago. Here's a recent one of my nephew and I where I'm striking a particularly Wolverine-esque pose (my nephew prefers Spider-man to Logan, though, unfortunately):

I'd honestly like to see a good attempt at the mask and costume with a good designer who an eye for quality materials (colored leather or a rubber'ish material). The mask just shouldn't be some oversized ridiculous thing, something like the Astonishing mask is fine.
That said I honestly wouldn't mind if he didn't wear a costume in the solo movie at all but the X-Movie costumes did come across as pretty flat and kind of unimaginative compared to the Ultimate/Grant Morrison ones which at least had a big defining element (big yellow X's) and bigger spots of color.

The Morrison-era costumes made the X-Men look like giant human bees. If that's how they looked on paper, imagine how dumb they'd look in real life... :p

If that's how they looked on paper, imagine how dumb they'd look in real life... :pSee here's the thing, I still wouldn't mind seeing live action versions of those because there's still a visually distinctive yet exciting look to them.
It doesn't even necessarily have to be a bright yellow but the movie costumes to me, while fine for what they were still left alot to be desired in their design. For Cyclops, Jean, and Storm they were somewhat practical since they offered protection but the villains had better overall color usage and distribution. The Beast and Colossus ones were a step in the right direction though.
For Wolverine he should have had a looser style and look even if he's not going to use a mask.
