Reading through some back-issues today, and found a very disturbing page in Uncanny X-Men #189.

In the page mentioned, Rachel Summers and Amara are visiting the Statue of Liberty. Rachel begins to remember her past and- well, i'll just quote it:

Narrator: In her mind's eye, the memories aren't pleasant.

In her mind's eye, she sees Lower Manhattan burning.

The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center are in ruins. Thousands are dead, many more injured.

<Image of the towers in rubble, with smoke billowing from the ruins.>

Now I know this issue was written years before 9/11, and in it's original context was meant to show the horrors of Rachel's future. But obviously the events of September 11th gives this page a different context in my eyes (and I assume many others). Through no fault of the writer or artist, recent events have made this page inspire much different emotions then it did originally.

Can anyone think of other X-Men pages which are now viewed differently then they were originally?

Not to be rude or insenisitive....but comics, movies, television, books have been showing us images of a destroyed New York for decades. 9/11 was the SECOND attempt to blow up the WTC and on 9/11 people lost their lives on a plane in PA as well as the Pentagon and before that people were killed in the US embassy in Kenya, the USS Cole in Yemen and thousands more in afghanistan.

So if you're going to talking about Osama's evil brotherhood and how it's changed the world and you want to show some REAL respect think about more than JUST NYC.

(I'm not being a bitch, I'm just saying people act like it was ONLY the WTC when it was a lot more than just that and a lot more people lost thier lives)

btw I think the destruction of Genosha in New X-men 114(?) was kinda eerie since the issue came out IN september (just to stay on topic)

Pretty much any apocalyptic future featuring New York in the old days showed the WTC destroyed. Because they're such a recognizable image. They even appear in the "Future Tense" storyline of Gargoyles.

I understand both your points, Emma and Beast ( well, Emma's was a tad too agressive for the point she was trying to make, but whatever.) This post was not made only in ode to 9/11, and it did not presume to be the only example of a post-apocalyptic New York. It was an example used because of it's clear relevance to the topic and because of it's relevance to the X-Men. You're reading too much into it if you think it was more then an example meant to begin discussion of the topic.

Not really sure how it leads to different emotions - RL, twin towers flattened, thousands die. Rachel Summers, twin towers flattened, thousands die.

Yeah, there were different causes, but what emotion does it provoke in you now that it didn't before? If it's one of horror at all the life lost, well that's what it was aiming for in the first place.

i don't think the thread starter was suggesting otherwise.
in my understanding of what he was saying was that when that issue was written in '84, i believe, the idea of the Towers being destroyed was a remote and nearly unbelieveable idea. it was scary because it seemed so unreal a concept. Now that it's actually happened, one could re-read the issue and see that the idea of Rachel's future was not that distant or unbelieveable a concept. and it could even be read as scarier.
I don't think anyone was suggesting that anyone else did not die on or before 9/11, and i don't appreciate the idea that you were saying that individuals were not paying proper respect to anyone else. that idea is insulting to a grevious degree.

Yeah, that's how I read it, too. Before 9/11, something like that was strictly confined to the realms of movies and other forms of fiction, but afterwards, it really opened the door to other equally horrifying things becoming a reality.

Just pray they're the slow shambling ones. If they're the fast zombies, we're screwed.

Yeah. The slow shambling zombies i could deal with. The fast ones would have me down and chowing in like five seconds. I'm just that fat and out of shape.
I need to quit smoking too.

I'm so zombie food!

If it does, don't go to the mall, since Dawn of the Dead everybody thinks that's a great plan and I can just see everyone heading for malls and it'll end badly ;)
