Rock has been fading for years now, but the White Stripes showed that the genre still has some life. I enjoyed most of Elephant, but their other albums not so much.
Today, I heard a song from their new album, Icky Thump, after reading both a bad review and a good review just yesterday. Anyway, the song I heard was "Conquest" and it's supposedly one of the best songs on this album. The song was bold and lively, making me picture flamenco dancers and matadors and bulls. It could have been a great song, but was reduced to just a good song thanks to the slightly over-the-top cheesy lyrics. That Jack White sure is a silly monkey.
Still, on the strength of Conquest alone, I may pick up this album. Has anybody heard the whole thing yet? What did you think of it?

He didn't write that one, actually.

Got it. Love it. Get it.
And get the entire back catalogue while you're there.

I'm not sure I want to get into this argument again, but come on. Rock hasn't been fading anywhere.

I think 'Rag and Bone' may be my favorite too. Either that, or 'You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You're Told)'

I love every WHite Stripes album. . .
Except this one. I might like it more after further listenings, but right now. . . I don't think it's very good.

Just bought it yesterday, but haven't finished listening to it (just the car ride home). Got to track 5, and I enjoy it so far.

Remind me, what is it that the White Stripes have to prove at this point?

First time through: I love it. But I am a ginormous White Stripes fan.
It's not as good as Elephant, which is no knock really, since Elephant's one of my favorite records. It's better than Get Behind Me Satan but I liked most of that record anyway.
Anyway, it's great. Go get it. And while you're at it get Elephant and De Stijl.

My favorite White Stripes album is still Red Blood Cells, which was my introduction to them and which I could probably listen to for longer than almost any other record released this century without getting bored; Elephant was just as good, but didn't capture my imagination in the same way; I felt that Get Behind Me Satan ran a little too much on the steam of the previous records; and Icky Thump is a triumphant return to form, as well as the sonic and conceptual expansion they've needed for a while.
They're one of the few bands whose records I make a point of buying as soon as they come out, as opposed to waiting till I get get them used, or (the horror!) just downloading them and deciding on that basis whether they're worth the $10-$15.
All hail the thump!

Oh, and it's White Blood Cells.
I got the special limited-edition Soviet-Russia version.
Man, I suck at pulling names out of my memory.

I really enjoyed it from what I heard, but so far it's only half the album. I'm currently listening to the second half. The one thing that I really picked up from this is the worldly influences. Some songs with Celtic flavors, some with spanish, and of course the overall blues feel of some tracks. It's kind of a cool listening experience.
Oh and I can tell how much Jack likes his new toy (The synth).

Rag and Bone is my second favorite ont he album. My favorite is Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn...but then I really like celtic sounding music.

i've been trying to convince myself to buy the album, i didn't really like 'Get Behind Me Satan' aside from the only rockin' tracks, Blue Orchid, and Instinct Blues, most of the soft stuff didn't cut it for me, i loved 'Elefant'! is 'Icky Thump' rockin', or is most of it soft?

Well, it rocks way harder than Satan. I wouldn't call anything Jack White yelps on soft, though.

I thought it was a considerable improvement from Get Behind Me Satan, Elephant bored me slightly due to overplay.
To me it's a more grown-up step up from White Blood Cells and I frikkin' love it!!!!!!

Effect & Cause was the biggest surprise on the album [for me]. I'm glad this band has kept it's head. I read an interview in which Jack explained stepping away from the "hipster underground" and bringing it back to the Blues... made me respect him more.

Well I got the album earlier this week, and despite buying Antibalas Security it has friggin' death grip on my brain. I cannot stop playing "You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do As Your Told)" and "300 M.P.H. Torrential Downpour Blues."
All hail the Thump!

I expect that Quentin Tarantino will eventually use Conquest in one of his movies.

It'd definately fit.
Most of the album feels like the soundtrack to some kind of acid trip mariachi movie to me.
