This is mine.
To get the discussion going I'll pose the following quieres.
1) Classical or Electric?
2) Jimi Hendrix or Django Reinhart..."I did more for the guitar"
3) How much would YOU pay if the 1st Telecaster went on sale on ebay?
4) Whats the funniest thing that's ever happned to yuo that involves a guitar (and possibly lubricant)
:)

I have to agree with you there. I've always liked that guitar.
For now I'll play my mere Epiphone Les Paul, but someday...

I have an Ovation acoustic passed down to me from my father that's between 25 and 30 years old. Plays better than any other acoustic I've touched, including Martins and Taylors (it also feels better than many electrics).

1) Classical. Electric is great, but I'm old-fashioned and prefer the workmanship of someone who plays a traditional guitar.
2) Hendrix did more. Reinhart is an amazing guitarist, but Hendrix opened up a path followed by many while retaining his inimitability throughout the years.
3) I wouldn't shell out a lot for a guitar because I'm too much of a tightass when it comes to money. Ultimately, what I've got is fine and can't be replaced.
4) I often have nightmares that involves my acoustic getting smashed. Relief overtakes me after I awaken.

I have 10 guitars total.
My Squire Strat that I got in second grade is a piece of shit, but it's still my favorite guitar. Nothing else feels quite the same. I've put new pickups in it so it sounds better than it should.
However, this guitar is my pride and joy! click for a pic... also, I had it before he ever did.

Funny, my holy grail is still a high quality Fender of some sort (whether it's a Strat, fifties Telecaster, or a Jazzmaster tends to vary on my mood at the time and which guitarist I am currently fixated on) but a few weeks ago I actually snapped up a decent guitar. I had no intentions of buying a new one until my skill had developed until my crappy Epiphone Strat was below requirements.
Well one of the guitar shops in town was selling Tokai ES copies for $299 Cdn. These things can range up to $600 and I've seen one in town for about $680.
I got one for $299. $331 after tax. When was I going to stumble across a deal like that again? And it actually sounds good, even when plugged into my slightly damaged marshall practice amp. (And this opinion was actually confirmed by a friend who plays guitar.) I don't need the tone to be reefed up all the way to max to get a half-decent sound. It's red with a burnt black trim and has a copy of a bigsby tremolo on it. It doesn't go out of tune easily when using the trem and the neck is much more playable. I actually find it easier to shift my thumb up and down the neck as well as stretch out my fingers when doing warm up exercises on it. (Which I think may have something to do with the thickness and curve of the neck allowing me better positioning for my thumb and leverage for my fingers.) I just love it!

No, it's a Fender Designer series Stratocaster. It's black with a white trim, chrome pickgaurd, and noisless pickups. I put a white Apple sticker behind the bridge. I love it.
Oh and mine doesn't have the Floyd Rose Tremelo like Morrello's... and it doesn't say SOUL POWER either.;)

[B] Electric. I just listen to more electric guitar music than classical, then again I don't listen to that much classical music either right now. It would be a different matter if you said acoustic vs. electric since I love Reinhardt, Lang, Fahey, Watson, and a great deal of old blues stuff.
But it would still be electric because a.) I have a fundamental love for three-chord guitar rock and b.) I really love the odd textures that electric guitarists can coax out of their instruments such as Thurston Moore, Henry Kaiser, Jonny Greenwood, Tom Verlaine, and Robert Quine.
2) What Jesse said. Hendrix simply completely exploded the possibilities of electric guitar.
3) Pay? Don't you mean intercept the shipment at the first convenient moment?
(Besides I'd have to rob a bank to even pay for the initial asking price of the first Telecaster...which I'd probably do too if intercepting the shipment wasn't convenient.)
4) I broke a string while tuning down the strings on my new guitar so I could tune them all back up again. While I was doing this I was talking with a friend on MSN and relating to him how my friend continually suffered from the oppression of some asshole at work covering himself with Axe body spray. Anys I related what happened on MSN and he rather facetiously replied:
"That's what you get for dissing Axe!"

Naming a guitar is healthy, it shows love and commitment, kind of like a baby, but without having to feed it or anything;)
I named my first Strat Tulula (Sp?), but I had to sell her because I got some repairs done and the guy fucked her pick up up, so I complained and he changed them an they still didnt work, so he changed them back, but still kept the money for the new ones. After that I found out the bridge had been damaged so tried getting that fixed for free and he started giving me shit, so I got pissed of and went across the road to sell my baby.:(

You don't want to meet some of my female friends, they hate guitars, mainly because they can't stand their guys paying more attention to the guitar than them. One threw her boyfriends guitar out of a third floor window after she ound out he'd cheated, the other sold his and bought some random stuff for him because she said that a guitar wasnt healthy for a relationship.

My only electric axe right now is the Korean made Michael Kelly Valor Q. I had a PRS for a while, but with a 1 year old who likes to help his dad play, I thought I better not keep it around, since I am not in a band or anything, but I might get some new pickups for it.

My main guitar is a 1967 Eko Ranger 6-string acoustic, very similar to this one...
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/5126/ekorangeraf4.jpg
I love these old Eko acoustics. They're really solidly built and they've got such a lovely, warm, deep tone to them. I also own a Fender Squire Stratocaster and a Fender Squire Precision bass guitar.
As for my dream guitar, well I've kinda got two! Firstly, one I'm actually likely to own at some point in my life - a Cherry Burst Eko Ranger 12-string kinda like this one...
http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/6892/ekorangerord50cherryburcz5.jpg
...except with a white Eko badge on the headstock like this one has...
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/9650/ekoranger12stringwitholzy3.jpg
And then the guitar I will probably only ever dream about owning, a Rickenbacker 360 in black...

1. ESP James Hetfield signature Explorer that's about 10 years old and plays great still.

2. Epiphone PR 200 Sunburst Acoustic that gets a really sweet sound

3. B.C. Rich Platinum series Warlock that plays horribly and was expensive to boot. I bought it because I was playing in a metal band and wanted a "metal" looking guitar. Unfortunately it's the worst guitar I've ever owned, and I couldn't sell it to save my life...

I have a Fender Strat and a Fender Acoustic. It really depends on the day which one I like more, but it usually goes to the acoustic since I have great strings on it now. I'm more of a rhythm player so the acoustic is great, but the strat isn't sometimes. Probably a lot has to do with my inhability at playing, but the tone just tends to be too cutting and sharp. I'm strongly thinking of trading it in for a nice tele, but I'm not sure.

the other sold his and bought some random stuff for him because she said that a guitar wasnt healthy for a relationship. Oh. My. God. I don't know what I would even do if my girlfriend sold my guitar because she decided it wasn't good for the relationship. Once I'd calmed down, I'd probably have her return as much of the stuff she bought as possible and then replace my damn guitar with a comparable one. God, I'd be livid. LIVID. I love my guitar, and playing it is my venting/coping activity for the stresses of life. Admittedly, though, she would know better than to do something that crazy and knows how important it is it me, even if she can't stand it. ;)
What did your friend do?! I have to imagine there was a fight about that! LOL
Anyway, I have two. My first was a Fender Squire Strat. It's a piece of crap but actually sounds surprisingly good on the clean channel, very acousticy. I've had the input replaced and the pickups services after something broke loose inside and it sounds okay for bluesy stuff.
My second is an Ibanez RG-470. I worked my ass off to buy this my first summer in college, and it sounds amazing. The Floyd Rose tremolo is a pain in the ass and forces the action and string tension to be a little higher than I like, and the clean tones aren't half as good as my much-cheaper Squire, but this guitar was made for rock and metal. It carries distortion and overdrive beautifully, but I wish it was a little easier to play.
I'd love a late-60s classic Les Paul. Drooolz.

Fender gave it a Floyd Rose type tremolo and 24 frets which were both very common on 80s metal guitars.

Well the pointy horns are rounded off compared to other metal guitars like the BC Rich and the fact that the guitar is still heavily tied to the Fender aesthetic means that it does have a slight retro vibe to it.

About the Performer...
it was built in 1985-1986 only, along with the Katana (sort of a Flying V) and were dropped in 86 due to low sales. So, there really aren't many out there. Fender also made a Bass version of The Performer and Katana.
I've seen them in black and the sparkly green(most common) and now this off white (only time).
The 24 frets, deep cutaway and humbuckers are the dead giveaways that it's a metal guitar. It (as well as the Katana) had a different headstock than other Fenders... kinda like a triange.
When I played it, it sounded and played like a metal guitar... but still Fenderish. It played fast and had low action, like you'd expect in a metal guitar. I didn't like the Floyd Rose, though... just not a fan of the FR tremelo.
In the end I really just like the way it looks, and want one because of that more than how it sounds. :D

The only guitar I have is a modest little Yamaha Acoustic. It's fine for what I need it for (which is not much actually).
As far as electric basses, this is what I've been rocking for a long time, 10 years or so. A Fender P-Lyte Deluxe:
http://i104.photobucket.com/albums/m162/punchy576/instElectric_BassesPBass_Lyte_Delux.jpg
I really dig it. It's very versatile since it has both a humbucking bridge pickup and a Precision pickup. And it has active electronics and onboard EQ but I rarely use it, I'd rather EQ on the amp.
But it's getting old and the neck is just about done-for. Plus it's never really had as fat of a sound as I like. But I've been playing upright bass for so long I've never really had a reason to upgarde. I think now's the time. I want to start playing on electric bass more and hopefully working more on electric as well. A good friend of mine is a great electric bass player and has a bunch of different axes including one I want. A '62 Reissue Fender Precision. The tone is huge and it plays really nicely. I kind of wish it had a bridge pickup so I could get more punch but its not that big of a deal (I pretty much only use the Precision pickup on my bass now). It runs about $1000-$1500 and they're pretty hard to find but hopefully I can acquire one before the end of the summer.

I've played more than one bass with a fiber glass neck that sounded great. And they never go out of tune.

i think it works nicely. but guitarists are very... traditional about their guitars. i really don't trust anything other than maple and rosewood, for no good reason. i just like the feeling of holding something made the same way for 56 years. i don't know if violinists or cellists like tuning pegs with "Character" that need extra attention to stay in tune, or scratches and dings to let the world know their instrument is played, but as a guitarist, it just feels right to see the wood.
however, i still wanna try a parker fly. like, 4 pounds, comfortable and balanced with nice pickups... i don't like SGs cause they feel so... delicate even though they can take a beating. but there's no reason for back problems from carrying around something over 10 pounds on your shoulder for hours.

Has anybody here every played a Schecter Hellcat? There is a very tempting one used at a local pawn shop here.
I played one about a year ago and it seems like a good cheap guitar for surf rock. Anyone know of any problems or anything with them?

Schecter is a well-regarded name in general.
I used to have a guitar that was based on a Schecter neck and body. I quite liked it.

I've never owned one, but I played another Hellcat that was very different from this one.
The other one had minihumbuckers, dot inlays, locking tuners and a wilkinson trem. The one I played the other day had single coils, block inlays and a jazzmaster-based tremolo.
I've also seen them with two humbuckers, but I am looking for something with single coils right now.

So I bit the bullet and am getting a schecter hellcat out of layaway this week. I can't seem to find a picture of the one I am getting though, since they have gone through several incarnations, apparently..

The only guitar I have is a modest little Yamaha Acoustic. It's fine for what I need it for (which is not much actually).
As far as electric basses, this is what I've been rocking for a long time, 10 years or so. A Fender P-Lyte Deluxe:

I really dig it. It's very versatile since it has both a humbucking bridge pickup and a Precision pickup. And it has active electronics and onboard EQ but I rarely use it, I'd rather EQ on the amp.[/IMG]
For electric bass I'm running with an Ibanez SRX3EX. I love the feel of it. Dual active pickups. I restrung it flatwound giving it a little more warmth. I've also got an Yamaha bb2200, which is my first bass that I keep as a backup/travel bass. (except I usually bring the Ibanez anyway). I'm sort of thinking about an acoustic/electric as my next bass purchase, but that's down the road a bit.

And I've played those SoundGear basses before. Not my thing but they are really nice axes and pretty modestly priced if I recall correctly.

Saw this on another site:
Dear Abby:
I think my wife is cheating on me. I am a working musician and travel a lot. I've been noticing strange things about her. Like stepping outside to answer her cell phone. She goes out with friends and comes in late.
A buddy of mine plays guitar in a band and he says my wife and some guy have been coming to his shows. He wanted to borrow my amp, so I said ,"Sure, if I can hide behind it at your show to see who she's with." He agreed. Saturday night I slipped behind my Marshall JCM800 half stack and could feel the heat. It was at that time I noticed one of the tubes was not glowing as bright as the other three. Is this something I can fix, or do I need to take it to the shop?"
Thanks,

Mostly house, but I do visit friends out of the state I am in now and they tend to want to jam.

I have a Ibanez electirc, real plain one. I got it couple years ago for christmas, bundled with amp and case. With my own money I bought an Olympia Acoustic ($100).
But are horribly out of tune, and the Ibanez only has 5 strings cuz my high E broke. So I need new strings, and I want a phaser pedal so I can screw around and make Star Wars sounds. :D

I remember when PRS was a small company making very high-quality guitars. Somewhere over the past 10 years they've gone a bit bigger and corperate. A friend of mine used to play them exclusively but stopped when PRS started endorsing Creed.

well, Godin is still relatively small, and makes very nice guitars. it can work as a replacement for a PRS in quality. for a specialer choice, ferrington could be an option, or another electric luthier. heck, G+L is expensive enough to act as a substitute, and they're pretty.
anyway, any acoustic players out there?
i've been trying to figure out for a while what one guitar can cover everything i want, but it's not possible. unless someone finds an OM tele that can switch between acoustic and electric nylon and steelstring.

Yeah, that seafoam is awesome. That is the color I would go for if I ever got one.

Seems like a Taylor T5 might do the trick, except for the nylon string. There are good acoustic emulators out there.

Yeah, I was rather put off by the pics of the guy from Daughtry at the bottom of the page.
That's it, Paul Reed Smith! I'll never pay several thousand dollars for one of your guitars now!

I used to have a CE-22 but I never got along with it, but I would consider another PRS if I was in the market for an electric. I would probably get a McCarty Soapbar or a custom Soapbar.

get a reg'lar tuner. it's probably 30 bucks. and listen carefully. eventually you'll hear what an in-tune guitar sounds like. it resonates better, and youll really get the 4th intervals stuck in your mind.
soon, something like the amount of strings won't be a bother to you because you'll be worrying about the benefits of .10s vs. .09s vs. .11s etc.
and for the record, thicker string isn't always thicker sound.

I guess it depends on your hand size. I've always been an Ernie Ball Extra Slinky .008s man myself.

This is my new used (and recently modified) guitar.
2005 Schecter Hellcat. I changed the pots to better pots and put an orange drop cap in for the tone and now it rolls nice and smooth. I used a rotary tool to carve the truss rod cover to match the pickguard and carved it into a flame and put some graphtech saddles for better string support. Those vintage style saddles just don't support the strings.
Currently its set up with 11s but I might drop them down to 10s because the 11s are pulling the vibrato unit more than I would like.

Its an old vintage style, one spring, like on a jazzmaster. The only thing I can do loosen the truss rod ( ) and have the action go up, or see how the 10s do. Or just live with it, which is okay, too. :)

I found my old tuners that I lost.
But I actually find it easier to tune with the piano.
