View Full Version : Things that make me pissed off in Anime

I'm not a big anime fan. But in the ones I do like, their are some things that make me pretty annoyed.
They'll usually just spend the first 5-10 minutes recreating the last scene from the last episode. It makes me bonkers.
Then, in fight scenes, they'll usually have half the episode talking about moral philosophy or they dark past or something like that, cut to two minutes of awesome choreographed fighting, and then go back to talking.
I'm not saying its like that for all of anime. Lupin the Third always guaranteed a long, drawn out fight scenes and snappy, fast-paced dialogue. Same with Cowboy Behop. And I'm definitely not saying that plot and character growth aren't important. But it just annoys me to no end that they have to fill in useless junk in order to fill 25 minutes of screen time.

Both of those issues are problems that I've seen in very few anime. Most of the anime I've seen (and I've seen a LOT) had very little recap, if any at all, and would most likely reserve all recap material for a single recap episode (if any recap episode at all).
The second issue you bring up--talking philosophically during fighting, is another thing that, in my experience, is limited mainly to Shounen fighting anime--but its not exactly the kind of thing you'll find in Scrapped Princess, Seikai no Senki, Twelve Kingdoms, Now and Then, Here and There, and so on. Heck, even Ghost in the Shell, Stand Alone Complex, which usually introduces philosophical stuff every once and a while, will typically discuss the philosophy jargon before or after the action scenes.

You´re watching the wrong shows.
There´s more to anime than Dragonball and Naruto.
The recent One Piece episodes have a lot of recap...skip through that 5 minutes of crap

What shows are you watching that do this?

I recall that Inuyasha tended to do this quite a bit which would get a bit annoying after a while.

^As I said. Shounen Action shows: DBZ, Naruto, Bleach, InuYasha, One Piece, --all those shows mentioned are Shounen Action Shows.

The worst case with recapping that I can think of was "Giant Robo" Episode 7, which had some 15+ minutes of recapping. On the other hand, the episode was extra long (more than an hour), and it originally came out 2-1/2 years after Episode 6. They also occasionally added new scenes into the recap.

Ha, yes, amen. ^.^
What you're describing occurs in the less-than-top-tier bits of anime. It happened a shitload in Dragon Ball Z, and perpetuates forward in Naruto, but action series like Claymore, Samurai 7, Berserk, etc. all excel beyond your complaints.
There is good anime, ya know. ;]

Just wondering if you noticed this. Picture those casts.
Lupin. Fujiko. Jigen. Goemon.
Spike. Faye. Jet. And.. um.. Ed dresses as a samurai.
Well, three out of four ain't bad. And nothing against Bebop either, even with its tons of homages upon homages. I love it.

Or more so, there's more to anime than popular shonen shows or even shonen shows in general. Just like people need to stop thinking of superheros when they think of comics, they need to stop paying so much attention to shonen anime and manga.
Then again, I just read the newest volume of One Piece today and I loved it.
Meanwhile, I just saw Satoshi Kon's new movie Paprika and it was amazing. I love his work. It's like Hitchcock meets Eraserhead.

The thing that really pisses me off in anime is when a guy upsets the main female of the show and she pulls out a big ass wooden mallet and whacks him over the head with it! What if a male character kept doing that to a female? Noone would stand for i t!

It's funny that you mentioned that because it reminds me of Dragon Ball Z so much. I think that's the very reason I gave up on the series. There was too much talking. So, I see where you're coming from my friend.

Actually. I just thought of the most annoying thing about anime. The annoying fans.
No. Not us. The other fans. Them. Clearly not us.

THE most annoying thing in anime is when things get 'lost in translation'. Usually when shows are dubbed, and especially when they're dubbed for a younger dynamic than originally intended for. I HATE 4kIDS, Dic, Sabban, ect!

I don't mind this as a running gag, but even then it's overdone a bit in harem anime shows. Love Hina! in particular really overdoes it. One episode of Love Hina! that I watched had Keitaro get struck by an angry woman four times. Four freakin' times in an episode!
The first time it was Ok. The second time it was funny because it reminds you of how much slapsticky humour Keitaro has to put up with. The third time it bored me. The fourth time you get the sense that the writing staff is really running on fumes...

I'm always wondering where they keep their malets and whatnot...is it up their ass, in some random vortex, what? There's some list of rules a guy i know came up with explaining all the bizzare things that happen to female anime characters.
ex: the less clothes she's wearing to start with, the less she'll get hurt...visa versa... other random stuff
It was realy odd. I should have made a copy of it. It was like 12-13 pages long...

The hammers are kept in an interdimensional space commonly referred to as hammerspace. It should be noted that while it is called "hammerspace", one can draw other items out of it as well.
For a true expert in hammerspace, look at Mu Tze, or Mouse, from Ranma 1/2. He contains not only hammers, but chains, swords, baby-potties, bombs, knives, fans, and other assorted items within his hammerspace.
I just explained hammerspace.... lord, I'm old.
Most Hyperhammer things are purely symbolic, the guy is in reality getting insulted, screamed at, or maybe slapped.
As for the ridiculously long expositions, I hope most of you realize that it's done to stretch the episodes while the manga they're being adapted from catches up. I agree, however, that it's annoying as Hell, it really ruins the timing in a scene. Why don't they just wait for an arc to be finished before adapting it? Of course, that usually requires the TV show to invent their own filler stuff while the comics finish their arc. That annoys a lot of fans who often don't consider such filler canon. Sounds to me like Otaku and American fans aren't that different. :p
What bothers me absolutely the most about Anime is the fact that Tentacle and Lolita porn exist. Even if it doesn't directly affect the rest, it's disturbing stuff and it's hard to believe a culture like Japan's would come up with those. :evilangry

Wow. My friend's web comic is relevant in a conversation.
Here's one theory about hidden mallets.

Though I also like the "hammerspace" theory.

And now I wish I had thought of that question first. lol
